I agree with apoch. I did not know about his involvement with Ben Johnson at least I am not remembering hearing about it before. It almost sounds like while he was in charge he had a personal stake in it. He led a good witch hunt but I really don't think much justice was served. What is known about John Fahey, the man who is going to take his place? Will the witch hunt continue with guilty being said and the accused must bring evidence to prove innocence or will Fahey have to show evidence to prove guilt while they are considered innocent?

Interesting post. I have always wondered slightly about how teams were paid. I say slightly because I never bothered to look it up to find out the answer myself. So another thing I wonder about now is "how do minor league players get paid when they are brought up to the NHL?" Are they still paid their minor league contract amount in Canadian currency or do they get a new amount (on a per game scale) in US funds from the NHL team?

Thanks for the fpp. I helps me believe that any child has the potential to be great. There has to be a love to start with and that can sometimes be influenced by what is watched by the parents. Parents are a big part of this if they are willing to pay with money and time for practice. Our son works very hard at hockey and really loves it. He wants to play in NHL and this gives me hope. He did get some athletic genes from skydivedad but all I contributed is the love of watching sports as I am not very coordinated at them. I can most definately give him any support he needs. I also think that sometimes it seems kids have an easier time learning because they have not learned fear or mistrust. If you tell them they can do it they believe it. Where as an adult has learned to mistrust people and the fear of the risk they are taking.

I have to admit that I think baseball games have become too long. Saying that, I am really for instant replay for the purspose of homeruns. I think it would be an advantage to all teams. I did not realize that baseball had a 12 second rule. I really don't want to offend anyone by naming the ones I know but some pitchers take an extremely long period of time to get the ball to the plate. I think we can all think of some. It drives me crazy to see how many times time is called. A pitcher takes 30 seconds to get the sign and another 20 seconds to set his stance and then low and behold the batter calls for time and it all starts again. This is all well and good until you are an eastern time zoner with a west coast game and you do not get to bed to well after 1pm. Even 8:30 games go past midnight quite often. I don't think the instant replay of homeruns will add much more and the game could actually be quicker if they enforce the 12 second rule.

Well I think that a company like NBC could come up with an orginal idea for promoting this instead of digging in the closet for something they have already done. I also don't think the NFL one is as entertaining as the NHL one. If I was to duplicate my ideas I would do it better or at least at the same quality.

I have always thought that a city put so much money out for the olympics because they were going to make that back plus with the increase in tourism. Well chico I have never seen Footballers Wives so I don't know what you are talking about. All I am saying is the guy needs to grow up himself and not have his team expect some woman to do it. It will never happen unless he does it himself. I know plenty of women who get men to marry them thinking they will change him and wake up 20 years later married to the same guy. I personnally married a great guy so I am glad 10 years later I am still waking up to him. If she did in fact for fall of this crazy party animal than maybe she won't marry him because they say it will change him.

"Honey I don't really love you and don't really want to stop having girlfriends but hey will you marry me so my club will be happy?" Just because a guy is married does not mean his temper calms, he stops having girlfriends or even being wild in any way. It is time this boy steps up and becomes a man without the help of a woman.

It is a simple matter of economics. It is a lot cheaper to rehabilitate an employee than it is to hire and train his or her replacement. The more skilled the job, the more obvious the economic benefit becomes. One of the biggest problems in treating substance abusers is getting the patient to understand the nature of his problem and where it will ultimately take him unless he does something about it. Forcing an abuser into a treatment program is usually not effective; rather the patient must first recognize that he has a problem and that he cannot overcome it by himself. Once at that point, treatment will be effective All though if you offer and pay for the rehab and the employee doesn't get the help they need because they don't accept it, how many times do you offer? I don't personnally know Robinson but to me it looks like he is not accepting the help of rehab if he is still breaking the rules by drinking.

Well I am not harboring any grudges and no it does not affect my wallet for them to support him. Again they did not fire him, they suspended him to give him a chance to clean up his act. Do I think it is harsh to say he can't be a part of the team, sure but if the management thinks it would not help their organization to have him stay in contact then they have the right to do that. I am subject to beer commericials every day and when I worked people were always asking me to go for a beer. Did it advance my career maybe but I don't think it hurt it either if I didn't. These athletes are human first off who live in the USA, to say that they have it harder or easier than me when you don't know me and you don't know them is just as crazy as me saying they don't. Let's just admit that we don't personally know these athletes and their lifestyles or for that matter anyone on sportsfilter. Back on subject I think Brett Favre is an outstanding guy for wanting to stand up for a fellow teammate who is going through something that he has some knowledge in. Do I hope this distracts Brett Favre to the point that their team continues to play terrible - sure after all I am a Bears fan and any time we are better than the Packers it is a great day!

lbb, the only statement I was refering to you was the first one. I am sorry I did not make that clearer. I was also responding to other comments that people have made about it being harder for an athlete. I do not always highlight what I am referencing and that is a fault I have.
posted by skydivemom at 01:07 PM on October 19
Well llb he does still have a job and he just needs to take a year off to get back on the right track. No where in the NFL rules does it say he has to participate in the drinking that other athletes do. If your arguement is to say that he needs to be around his team for support and than you say that he has a harder time than non athletes because he has to be around it all the time, you are contradicting yourself. The whole athlete has a harder time is bogus anyway. When I was in my 20's the whole point of my life was when was I getting off work so I could go party again. It is no different if you are an athlete or not. He is not required or even encouraged to party to have a better chance at making it in his athletic career. The NFL supported him by giving him a rehab program and he blew it. They are giving him another chance by saying he can come back in a year. Let's hope he doesn't blow this one too.
posted by skydivemom at 12:37 PM on October 19
Ok if I am working a job and I fail the drug test and enter a rehab program and than fail again would I even still have a job? This guy is able to come back in a year and play again. He is really lucky the league doesn't just say you are done forever. I understand what Favre is saying about the support but the guy needs to get his life together and the other players on the team need to concentrate on winning for their management (and own self fulfillment) not just helping some guy who isn't even playing the game this year. You must do the job you are paid to do not be distracted by someone who isn't even playing right now. The whole idea that the league needs to get this guy some help is, in my opinion, ridiculous. I mean come on, did the league force him to go out and drink? Is there some unwritten rule in the NFL that says you must party? They tried to help him and he again broke the rules. How many chances does a guy get? Even Favre himself (as much as I hate to admit it) did the right thing by not drinking when he was in the rehab program.

Let me tell you though standing in between Jimmie Howard and Coach Babcock during one of the practice games was an incredible experience. I managed to talk to Draper and Zetterberg (2 of my favorites) and didn't even stutter over myself. Watching these guys play in itself was an experience. They were out there to win even if it was against their own teammates and just for practice. There was even a little shoving going on.
