Shotgun in the bucket I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, but a coworker and I were watching the NFL playoff games Sunday, and he had a question I couldn't answer, so I put it to all of you: Why do many quarterbacks lift a leg just as they're about to take a shotgun snap? I thought it might have to do with getting a quicker start on backpedaling, but does anyone know? Thanks.

It was 31 years ago today that the Birmingham Americans beat the Florida Blazers 22-21 to take home the one-and-only World Bowl trophy as champions of the late, not-so-lamented World Football League. The Ams jumped out to a 22-0 lead and held of a furious Florida rally. And Miss Florida, who later went on to bigger things was there...

Does anyone want to take two U.S. Open tickets off my hands? Chicobangs was good enough to procure a bunch for the Sept. 7 evening matches and due to family obligations, I can't go. Chico, how much are they?

It's time to pitch the DH. The most astonishing occurrence in the first six weeks of the baseball season — other than the decline of my World Series favorites, the Seattle Mariners, who played like the Seattle Pilots — was that the National League outscored the American League.

BoKnows, I believe that when the DH was introduced in 1973, it was on a three-year (or so) trial basis, but the league quickly (like, a month into the season) made it permanent.

CFL Hall confirms class of 2008 Professional football's most dynamic special-teams star is headed to the Canadian Football Hall of Fame. It's taken nearly eight years, but Mike (Pinball) Clemons can finally call himself a Hall of Famer. The five-foot-five native of Clearwater, Fla., truly excelled in a big man's game. He holds the pro football record for single-season all-purpose yards (3,840, set in '97) as well as the career mark (25,438). He captured three Grey Cup titles as a player ('91, '96 and '97) and another as a coach in '04, becoming the first black head coach ever to win the CFL championship. A Heisman Trophy winner while at Boston College, Doug Flutie still holds CFL single-season records for completions (466), yards (6,619) and touchdowns (48) and in 2006 was voted the top player in league history. Last year, he was inducted into both the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame (the first non-Canadian to do so) and the U.S. College Football Hall of Fame. CFL rushing leader Mike Pringle and all-star offensive lineman John Bonk were also among the players named to the Hall on Wednesday while former Saskatchewan Roughriders president Tom Shepherd will be enshrined as a builder at ceremony in September.

thanks. i seem to recall that in 1987 or so, he had something like seven returns for touchdowns and for each one he claimed a peach-colored jacket from the CBC broadcast team. Some correct me on this if I'm completely deluded.

I'm not sure what time that was shot, but my wife was on her way into work near where the parade started and saw people all-but-passed out on the street in Giants garb at 9 a.m. or so. This gives you a good idea of the mood out there.

Why did the clock continue to run after Brady threw the final incompletion? There were at least four seconds on the game clock and it ran down to one after the play was clearly over.

Mets Get Santana Pending a 24-48 hour window for ironing out a contract extension and completing a player physical, Johan Santana is headed to the Mets for four prospects - outfielder Carlos Gomez , pitchers Phil Humber, Deolis Guerra, and Kevin Mulvey.

As a Mets fan, to me the best thing about this deal is that they now can abandon thoughts of Kyle Lohse and Livan Hernandez. The lineup still strikes me as a bit thin, especially at the corner outfield spots, the bench and the bullpen, if everyone's not healthy.

The Joy of Six The six worst sports movies ever. "Stumbling around seemingly high on botox, Stallone spends his time mulling over snippets of cod philosophy - "The world ain't all sunshine and rainbows, it's a very mean and nasty place" - and comes to the conclusion that, by losing, one can actually become ... wait for it ... a winner". The ensuing comments are lively.

Seconding dyams on the baseball-card book -- one of the best sports books ever written. One quibble: It came out in the early to mid '70s, cos' I had a copy when I was in grade school. It was reissued in updated form in the early '90s. Years ago, I wrote a piece for a baseball Web site where I went back and found out that Charley Maxwell really didn't do all that well on Sundays in 1956...
