McCarthy: marketing deal good for Favre Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy says a potential marketing contract for Brett Favre could benefit the star quarterback and the team. More importantly, it also could resolve their standoff over Favre's retirement.

C'mon Brett. Do you want to be remembered as a great quarterback, or as the Evander Holyfield of football--a guy who just doesn't know when to retire.

Falcons QB Michael Vick Indicted on Federal Charges; somewhat of a surprise, given that two weeks ago, most legal pundits familiar with the case said it was unlikely that Vick would face charges. Vick and three others are charged with violating federal laws against competitive dog fighting, procuring and training pit bulls for it and conducting the enterprise across state lines. The indictment alleges that Vick and his co-defendants began dog fighting in early 2001, the former Virginia Tech star's rookie year with the Falcons.

Here is the indictment as posted on the Atlanta Journal-Constitution's Web site. So much for the day job in Atlanta, Ron...er...Michael.

Red Wings Re-Sign Goalie Dominik Hasek Dominik Hasek and the Detroit Red Wings agreed to terms of a one-year contract Thursday that is worth more than $2 million in base salary and gives the 42-year-old goalie a chance to earn an additional $2 million in bonuses

With Hasek, I see the Wings making the playoffs. I don't see them making it with Osgood.

The best athletes ever, by number. A team of SI.com's finest numerologists crunched the data on jersey numbers to come up with the best performers (across all sports) at each number from 00 to 99 (Eddie Gaedel was a lock at 1/8).

Plante over Moon, no question. Certainly Moon was talented, but the history and overall contributions to his sport side with Plante. And Ted Williams or Gordie Howe. What a debate. Whatever you choose, the other side will, rightfully, scream.

From 0 to 99 and everything in between. The Sporting News breaks down who are currently the best athletes at each number in sports.

Rose admits to betting on Reds every night Pete Rose revealed Wednesday that he bet on the Reds "every night" while he was manager of the team and that the Dowd Report was correct when it said he did so."I bet on my team to win every night because I love my team, I believe in my team," Rose said. "I did everything in my power every night to win that game."

should be given a second chance providing he comes clean What...he admits he broke the rule so we should put him in the HOF because of that? I'm all for second chances, but he used that and other chances up with his lying and spin over the years.

Records are made to be broken, not rules. Rules are made for a reason. Pete Rose broke the cardinal rule of baseball. He made the choice to do that. He knew it was the cardinal rule of baseball, since it's posted in clubhouses. He made the choice to break it anyway. Since he made the choice to break the rule, he can live with the consequences. No HOF for Pete Rose.

Veterans Committee picks no one for Hall NEW YORK - No one was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee. Ron Santo, Jim Kaat and all the other candidates were left out Tuesday when the Veterans Committee admitted no new members for the third straight election.

Marvin Miller had more of an impact on baseball than half of those guys on the veterans committee. I could understand them not wanting to vote somebody into the HOF if there were no good candidates. But Miller, Santos, Kaat...come on committee, get off your egos and get these guys in.

Florida 41, Ohio State 14 The team that many felt should not be there wins in convincing fashion. A bad game by the Buckeyes or an excellent effort from the Gators?

posted by PublicUrinal at 11:13 PM on January 09

More than ever, it seems that in the big games, it's simply a matter of who wants it more, not how good a team looks on paper or even the regular season highlight reels. Florida wanted the championship and played like champions. Ohio State read too many of their own press releases and didn't even show up. Florida pounded the Buckeyes and showed they wanted the title and showed they were better than Ohio State on the field. Ohio State played like they weren't prepared, didn't care, and took Florida for granted. Florida deserves the title. Their offense and execution dominated Ohio State. I feel for Boise State, but I really don't think they could beat this Florida team.

Holyfield determined to be five-times champion Evander Holyfield fights Puerto Rico's Fres Oquendo at the Alamodome in San Antonio tonight in his 50th professional contest, on course for what many boxing insiders believe is a foolhardy and vainglorious attempt to become the first man to become a world champion for the fifth time.

"This is America, and part of America is about letting people do what they want to do. I want to fight. I will become the undisputed champion, and then I will retire and be happy."

Talk about obsession. Evander apparently won't be happy until he gets his head cracked before he retires.

In a year of ups and downs The Tigers gave baseball fans in Detroit a year to remember. No matter the lingering bitterness of the finish, they were a team that deserves to be cherished.

posted by Ying Yang Mafia at 08:18 PM on October 30

The World Series was good for the Tigers this year in that the young players got some experience in the playoff atmosphere. So instead of nervous mistakes next year should be a top team that shows it should truly be at the top.

Rust belt blues Cardinal rookie pitcher Anthony Reyes comes up big, Tiger starter Justin Verlander comes up small, and Tiger hitting pretty much takes the night off as St. Louis takes game one of the 2006 World Series 7-2.

posted by justgary at 01:11 AM on October 22

Tigers played like they had some time off to get rusty. No offense, too many errors. Sounds like an inept team that took this game for granted. Hopefully they'll wise up and play smarter in Game 2.
