Sports Bio

Participation:
Baseball's the only sport I still play competitively but I'll play basketball, volleyball, or football whenever I get the chance. I swore off golf about 7 years ago due to frustration but I think I'm ready to get back into it. My winters are spent at the hill snowboarding.

Teams, in order of importance:
Milwaukee Brewers - I have many fond memories of listening to Uecker call games on the radio. I would love it if they could break out of mediocrity/sucking and make it to the playoffs for a change.
Denver Broncos - I was a big Elway fan growing up.
Milwaukee Bucks - Geography mostly, but I like Bogut and I'm excited for the Yi era.
Minnesota Twins - The team I have seen the most live.
Arizona Wildcats Basketball - Bibby and Miles Simon won me over in '97 and I've been a fan ever since.
Wisconsin Badgers Football/Basketball - Mostly due to geography.
Green Bay Packers- Because in Wisconsin you can't get away from them. I shunned them for Super Bowl XXXII due to all the flak I caught for being a Bronco fan, but they've slowly won me back.
Minnesota Timberwolves - Because of KG originally but now... I don't know anymore.

Random facts:
- I often start writing a comment only to second guess myself and not submit it.
- I root against the Yankees but find the playoffs more interesting when they are in them.
- In recent years the way I follow sports has changed. I still root for my teams but I'm not as emotionally invested in the teams as I once was. I'm not sure why this happenned or whether it's a good or a bad thing.

MMA Fantasy Draft If every fighter in the world was suddenly declared a free agent, what order would they be selected in?

posted to Boxing at 12:56 PM CDT

This is not a top ten pound-for-pound list; we’re going to pretend that through an act of god, every fighter in the world has been declared a free agent and that six different promotions have agreed to acquire the rights to each fighter through a universal draft.

Alot of what ifs but I think it's an interesting excercise in who are the most important fighters in terms of maketability and talent in the current MMA landscape.

Have we returned to the days of 'Gladiators'? The ice at Montreal's Bell Centre, home of the Canadiens, will be replaced tonight by an eight-sided, chain-link cage that will hold two incredibly fit men using an arsenal of fighting skills and raw violence to pummel the other into submission. Watching the men in the cage - their muscles clenched and red-faced with adrenalin - it is easy to see the comparison to the blood sport of ancient Rome.Mixed martial arts, and especially UFC, the largest purveyor of the sport, is moving from cult interest into the mainstream. Tickets to tonight's event sold out within a minute. CBS is to begin airing fights in prime time next month.

That article was troll bait to begin with, and posted to culture to boot. It's the same sensationalist anti-mma article you can find written in the weeks leading into or out of any UFC card.

I am a five-foot tall dance enthusiast. I like musicals. I do not like sports - not to watch, not to play.

I should write an article on musicals. Oh I don't like musicals, but I should write an article on why I dislike them. I'll give all the clichéd reasons too.

UFC Fighter Knocked Out in Eight Seconds In a Colorado ring thronging with his fans last night, Ultimate Fighting Championship fighter Houston Alexander was knocked out by James Irvin in eight seconds, the shortest bout in the sport's history. "Houston Alexander has been utterly exposed," Michael Rome declared on the blog Bloody Elbow. (See the video.)

posted to Boxing at 8:05 AM CDT

I watched that fight and I think when they mean "exposed" they are referring to this guy having a couple very convincing vicotories to begin his UFC career, but many having doubts about his actual skills.

That's exactly what they are talking about. He came out of nowhere with a couple entertaining wins that more resembled bar brawls than mma matches. Cue the UFC hype machine and then cue the mma blog backlash when Houston gets more attention than better but more technical(less exciting) fighters. I think there is a bit of "I told ya so" in the Bloody Elbow comments.

I don't think Alexander has taken a backwards step in any of his UFC fights, he takes no time to gauge distance or feel the other guy out. Great strategy by Irvine to see that and come out with the superman punch. Irvine has some heavy hands too so I wasn't real surprised to see Alexander drop so quickly. It only takes one.

Ultimate Fighting Robs The Cradle Want to watch 6-year-olds in the Octagon? Welcome to Missouri, apparently the only state in the union that allows "youth fighting." Says one parent, "We're not training them for dog fighting...I'd rather have my kids here than out on the streets."

The sport, which is also known as mixed martial arts or cage fighting, has already spread far beyond cable television.

Damn, the UFC has done a fine job of marketing.

I think the rules(no elbows, no ground and pound), pads, and short rounds should do a good job of limiting injuries. It's still going to be dangerous but I don't see it being more dangerous than youth football.

Critics Go Ape Over LeBron James Magazine Cover A picture of NBA star LeBron James and the model Gisele on the cover of April's Vogue is attracting controversy over their pose. The shot taken by renowned photographer Annie Leibovitz has been compared by some detractors to King Kong holding Fay Wray. ESPN.Com columnist Jemele Hill called it "memorable for all the wrong reasons." The photo is remarkably similar to "Destroy This Mad Brute," a famous World War I recruitment poster.

Realize, however, if a white television announcer was to refer to LeBron as a "monkey" or a "big ape" they'd be fired immediately.

But if they called him King Kong after blocking a shot I'm not sure there would be much of a fuss. I think Kong has transcended apedom... or maybe not based on the reaction this shot is getting.

"KG tanked it."

posted to Basketball at 5:27 PM CDT

Wow. Those grapes are so sour. KG is the only good thing that has ever happened to the T'wolves you'd think the owner would show a little more respect even if he's gone now.

As for the tanking, I don't really care. 50+ losses and a chance at DurOden is enough to make anyone's quad hurt. I was openly rooting against my bucks last year at about this time and I'm not sure why Davis would want ping pong ball stealing victories so badly.

Don't feed them.

But... that's their job. You can't fill 24 hours a day on sports talk radio without building up some controversy here and there. It's not every day that an owner calls out a franchises only star in it's history for "tanking".

Union to examine why Bonds has no offers The lack of offers to Barry Bonds will be examined by the baseball players' association as part of its annual review of the free-agent market. Less than two weeks before opening day, the 43-year-old home run king remains unsigned.

I would LOVE to have Barry Bonds playing left field/dh for my favourite team

Seconded. Put him in between Braun and Fielder in the lineup. Scary. What would be scarier though would be the defense the Brewers would then get to trot out there.

Brett Favre Retires Brett Favre has told the Packers and coach Mike McCarthy Tuesday morning he's planning on retiring after 17 seasons.

posted to Football at 9:07 AM CDT

Being in Wisconsin for this is a bit like being surrounded by Maddens. It's as scary as it sounds. I can't talk to anybody about sports without them gushing to me about how much they'll miss Brett and how much he meant to them, often punctuated with how well they think Rodgers will do. It was cute at first but I'm growing weary of it.

/not really a Packer fan, though I liked watching Brett.
