Pat Riley's scouting trip : reminds Bob Ryan of a trip he took with Dave Cowens back in 1979.

I had read this today shortly before logging into SpoFi. I'm glad to see it posted, because it's a nice look at the workings of the minds of a coach and a writer. Ryan must have kept a very good diary, because his recollections are quite detailed. The John Y. Brown era was not a good one in Celtics basketball, but as Ryan points out, Larry Bird, Robert Parrish, and Kevin McHale were indeed walking thorugh the door very soon. (I liked the anecdote about McHale fouling himself out of a game to avoid being hurt by Edgar Jones.)

By the way, yerfatma, your link took me to the SI.com article about Riley's trip. Here's the link to the Bob Ryan blog.

Should've looked before I leaped. Sorry 'bout that. (as his graceful descent turns into a headlong plummet)
