Rockies Vote Playoff Share for Coolbaugh : Adding to the good karma surrounding the team, the Colorado Rockies' players have voted for a share of their playoff earnings to be contributed to the widow of deceased minor league coach Mike Coolbaugh, killed earlier this year by a batted ball.

If the Rockies make the World Series, the share could be worth a whole lot. It's not exactly chump change if they get bounced in the first round, either, though. (And, assuming they don't blow a 5-run, ninth inning lead, things will be looking good for the Rockies as they head back to Denver.)

Awesome. The Red Sox did a nice job in 2004 giving shares to everyone they could think of, but this is better.

The Rockies, in their short existence, have always struck me as similar to the New Orleans Saints of baseball, loveable losers who tried really hard but just couldn't get over the hump. This current crew reminds me somewhat of the "Idiot" Red Sox clubhouse of 2004, except that I don't think anybody in the Rocks' clubhouse is quite as loopy as any number of guys on the '04 Sox.

I also got to know Clint Hurdle a bit when he was the skipper of the AAA Norfolk Tides back in the early '90s. Nice guy, class act, and very involved in the community.

This Coolbaugh decision just underscores my good feelings about the team. A classy move by a bunch of guys that I'm really beginning to admire. They'll never replace the Sox, but they'll soon challenge the Braves as my favorite NL team.

A Rocks n' Sox Series would probably be a lot of fun; I could see a couple of 15 - 12 games at Coors Field, just to shoot everybody's ERA all to hell. I could dig that. Strikeouts are fascist.

I'm starting to like the Rockies more and more, even though they beat my Padres.

I live in San Antonio, and we have the Padres AA affiliate here, and I had just seen Mike no too long before it happened when Tulsa came to town. Oddly enough, The night it happened, his Brother, Scott was here in town as the first base coach for Frisco. I talked to him after the game, and he was in a good mood. Obviously, he didn't know yet (no one did).

The Coolbaugh brothers were born and raised here in San Antonio, so I feel even more connected...

*Another odd coincidence, the next time Frisco came through, their manager was ejected, so Scott took over as third base coach. Later that inning, John Mayberry Jr. fouled one off straight at him. He moved and took it off his chest, then picked it up and tossed to a fan.
