Did the NHLPA lie to Mario? Mario Lemieux says he was told the players would present a new deal with a cap of $45 million to the owners during last weekend's last-ditch effort to save the NHL season. He also thinks a deal must be done in the next couple of months of the league faces dire consequences. Is there a sense of urgency here, or are we out until 2006?

Hell, I don't know.

Out cold.

I can't find the link, but I read a column recently in which a Canadian sports columnist argued that a $45 million salary cap would have caused the Edmonton Oilers to fold. He viewed the cancellation of the season as a welcome thing that would save the game because it didn't price the sport out of almost all of Canada.

Bobby Clarke, who has never exactly been a beacon of intelligent discourse, has just lit Bob Goodenow's britches on fire. Oh, this will help.
