Bobby V out as Mets manager.: Since 1996, New York baseball writers have been obsessed with the contrast between the manic Valentine and the laconic Torre. Is this the right response to a miserable season, a pot scandal, and a detached clubhouse? Or will this cast of characters continue to underachieve for a new skipper in '03?

This really should not come as a surprise. Valentine was given the tools to win the NL East and it did not come to pass. My guess is that the long home losing streak pretty much sealed his fate. He'll wind up on ESPN's Baseball Tonight. Here's an idea for a manager: Paul Molitor. What do you think of him as the next Mets manager?

What makes you think Molitor would be a good manager? And for the Mets in particular?

This bunch of characters could use an old-school grump like Jim Fregosi. Worked with the Phils in '93, even if the guy was the most miserable manager that year...

I'd vote for Buck Showalter (who sounds like he might be interested) or Tom Kelly.
