Is there any site that has good olympic history and statistics? I've looked all over this section of the DMOZ directory, and I can't find anything good. It seems like there would be plenty of statistics worth putting up somewhere. How many medals did Norway get at the 1964 summer games? How many medals have been given to Spain in all olympic history and what events were they for? Is there an IMDB of olympic sports I haven't found yet?

CBS SPORTSLINE has a pretty thorough history/database of the Winter Olympics. Gives you the medal winners of every sport for every Olympic year. Also, the total medal count for every country. And much, much more.

Not as thorough but nonetheless informative is CBS SPORTLINE's history/database of the Summer Olympics.

Of course, you could always go to the official Olympics site which has an excellent History of the Games (Summer & Winter) going back to 1896. The information there is quite thorough.

Only 1896, jacknose? What if I want to find out who won the pankration in 708 B.C.?

Actually, yesterday I was trying to find out the cities who bid for the olympics in any given year. Does anyone know about where I could find that? I had some success finding the cities in recent years but not anything earlier then say the Atlanta olympics.

geoff, if you go to the official History of the Games site and click on a specific year/city, you will see all the candidate cities for that particular year on the right-hand side (under "Key Facts").
