Next season with the opening of the new stadium would be a good time to retire Sheppard. He's a legend in his field, obviously, but come on. I think the fans and players will be able to carry on just fine. The team was able to continue after Gehrig died; they'll manage without Mr. Sheppard.
Jeter uses a recording of Sheppard for his at bats, which is fine. He even had an updated one for the All-Star game. But if I had to listen to it for every player it would be way too creepy.
Put me in the creepy category. History is great, but there are better ways to remember him than this. Besides, nothing wrong with making new history.
