Frost protege take a run at Mike Danton's younger brother This keeps getting weirder. During an OHL game between Kitchener and Oshawa, Adam Keefe "a Frost kid" jumped Tom Jefferson (Danton's estranged brother) and "pounded him." According to Oshawa's manager: "Was it premeditated? I can tell you that absolutely it was."

Vince Carter demands to be traded "It's just time for me to look after me," he says. And I admit I'm somewhat sympathetic to his position. Especially if the Raptors can get someone good in exchange.

If you're a high school basketball player, and you're thinking of declaring your eligibility for the NBA draft, you might want to make sure you don't suck.
Case in point, NBA hopeful Ivan Chiriaev strutted his stuff today at a high school all-star game. The assessment from scouts in attendance: "He can't play the game," or alternately, "What a waste of time." Uh, ouch!

New NFL Draft Thread. Did San Diego get the last laugh? How about everyone else? Cleveland looks good to me.

Leafs give Senators the beat down of the year. While the rest of us were watching basketball, some hockey team in Ottawa got their asses handed to them, to the tune of 6-0. Senators fans, are you gonna wear your "Leafs Suck" t-shirts tomorrow?

Second cyclist dead at Dakar, stage cancelled With approx. two dozen deaths since 1979, this year seems to have doubled the rally's average.

It's MY ball, dammit! Doug Mientkiewicz, he of the .215 avg as a 2 month defensive replacement, is refusing to give the Sox the ball he caught for the final out of the Series. "That's four years at Florida State for one of my kids". Selfish? Resourceful?

Makes Me Want to La La La La Though Ashlee Simpson's caterwauling was "simply hideous," Orange Bowl fans were booing the entire halftime recording industry infomercial, writes Dick Scanlon. "Most of the 77,000 people at that game paid good money for their tickets. They didn't ask for a silly and annoying MTV promotion to fill up their halftime."

I know the networks like to cross-promote their record label's musical acts during sporting events. But seriously, aside from the obvious economic considerations, who the fuck is programming these half time shows? Do they understand the TV audience for a college bowl game is probably not the kind of audience that will be receptive to these pop princesses? I don't see why they don't show Dave Matthews or The Roots (or whatever big acts they have signed that might actually appeal to their audience demographic). At least they had their token country singer for the redneck dollar.
Half-Brained The Green Bay Packers have been breaking the U.S. Flag Code by lowering flags to half-staff for Reggie White and other team figures. By tradition, only Memorial Day and "principal figures of the United States Government and the Governor of a State" rate the treatment.

"Giants Stadium, on this afternoon of Eli Manning's debut, is Plato's Cave. The millions of people watching the game are inside the cave, staring at shadows on the wall. The shadows are distortions of the reality outside the cave, treated, erroneously, as the thing itself. No matter how he plays, some part of Eli Manning's game, like his personality, will remain hidden from public understanding. It may be a trivial part; it may be the telling part -- the point is that no one can know for sure if the Giants have given their money to the right guy."

How so? His use seems to match my understanding. It's been a while... however, in Plato's metaphor the shadows on the wall are reality (as humans experience it), whereas the things creating the shadows/reality are the universal forms or ideals. I don't see WTF that has to do with football though.

Air Swamp? Vince Carter could be heading to New Jersey in exchange for Alonzo Mourning, Eric Williams, Aaron Williams, quite possibly Billie Dee Williams and possible picks.
(Warning: This is a Chad Ford story)

Is American Soccer catching the NHL's flu? The US Soccer Federation and the national team players association have been unable to agree to a new contract since the old one lapsed 24 months ago. Now the Federation is telling the players to sign a deal ASAP or Bruce Arena will be fielding a completely new team Feb. 9; the players have filed a compaint with the NLRB.

S.S. Lazio will not have any fans for it's next European home game. Why? Because of "racist abuse and crowd disturbances" during the UEFA Cup match against Partizan Belgrade. Ouch! In the past officials have imposed a one-goal penalty against Rome's worse half for similar infractions (I'm not sure if the penalty was actully ever assessed). The punishment does not take effect until next year (pending qualification), but does this punishment go too far? Or was it fair? Anyone have a better idea for subduing crazy fans? The BBC story is here.

I think sometimes Americans mistakenly believe that European nations are tolerant, pluralistic societies. However, that does not seem to be the case. What do you think would happen if the fans threw bananas at the players during a major league baseball game? Would that be tolerated?
G8 hurts back imitating Torvill and Dean, blames Jimmie Five Bellies. David Seaman to the rescue. You couldn't make this stuff up.

Giambi admits steroid use. No way!

Maybe it's me but I don't care. You still have to hit the damn ball. More strength produces greater bat-speed, which enables you to wait fractionally longer before swinging. And the longer you wait before swinging, the better you "see" the ball. So steroids can give you an edge in overall batting average. At least that is what I've read.

FoxSportsWorld Fox Soccer Channel (Note that the URL I used is not a permalink.) Fox has filed for a trademark on the name and rumor has it FSW will become an all soccer channel within the next few months. Sounds great, but what will become of my Aussie Rules Football?

"All it takes to own an ABA franchise is $10,000 and a business plan. About the same as it is to open a McDonald's franchise." ABA chief operating officer Joe Newman has overseen recent expansion that took the league from 7 teams last year to 34 (or 35?) teams this year. Join the excitement and reserve a market for yourself! (But you'll have to get in line behind the 21 new teams pencilled in for next season.)

Of the two dozen killed I wonder what the breakdown is for motorcycle vs. car vs. truck drivers. I seem to remember some car drivers getting shot or something a few years ago.
