Stop Me If You Think That You've Heard This One Before. A joint task force of law enforcement officials from Albany County, New York and Orlando, Florida raided a Florida pharmacy that they say may be the key to a massive, internet-based illegal steroids trade. Gary Matthews, Jr.'s name has been specifically mentioned, as well as a Pittsburgh Steelers team doctor who purchased $150,000 worth of human growth hormone just last year. More than two dozen doctors, pharmacists and business owners have been, or will be, arrested in the coming days in Alabama, Texas, Florida and New York on sealed indictments charging them with various felonies for unlawfully distributing steroids and other controlled substances.

Living up to my name Sports evoke many emotions in us whether we are watching or participating in them. The most common for me is hatred for the players opposing my team. Here is a list of the 10 athletes I would punch in the face upon meeting. A column by sportsfilter member Hater 187.

I don't hate many people (well, that's not actually true...) but I do HATE Chipper Jones with a passion that sometimes frightens me. First off, what the hell kinda name is Chipper!? Your name is LARRY for cryin' out loud! I also hate him because he's a big stupid head who I hate. There, I feel a bit better. Thanks for the thread.

Ullrich hangs up his cleats. After failing to find a team for the new season, and persistent doping allegations that refuse to go away, 1997 Tour de France winner Jan Ullrich announces his retirement. Ullrich was caught up in the Operacion Puerto doping case last year, and despite numerous other cyclists being given the all-clear, Der Kaiser has chosen to call it a day.

I agree that Jan was unlucky to peak at the same time Lance did. Having been beaten so many times by Lance, I think Jan simply resigned himself to being forever second on the podium. This may have led him to train and stay fit a bit less during the offseason. Perhaps because he was always second, Jan came across as a bit less robotic than Lance to me. Maybe Jan didn't train hard enough, have the same level of coaches and the "methods" they brought (see Michele Ferrari) as USPS/Disco did or maybe he just wasn't as good. Pro cycling is hurting in a bad way. It appears as if the Puerto investigation will be swept under the rug just as the Festina scandal was in the 90's. Now the major UCI/Pro Tour rift is adding to the chaos. Hopefully out of all of this will come a new generation of riders who rely a little less on doping and can bring some integrity back to the sport. Regardless, I remain a fan and anxiously await this weekend's Het Volk race and the rest of the spring classics.

A new way to watch How you can follow the Tour of California on Google Earth. (Thanks CSC)

I think the system still has a few kinks in it as it had a few riders waaaay off course during yesterday's stage from Sausalito up to Santa Rosa. Nonetheless this is cool stuff and agreed that cycling is embracing technology in a great way. I really enjoy (and am awed) when a rider's live telemetry (of heart rate, watts produced, cadence, etc.) is provided - doped or not, those guys can ride...

Barry Bonds Throws Teammate Under "Speeding" Bus. Ubiquitous San Francisco Giants slugger Barry Bonds, already under investigation for, well, just about everything he does, failed a drug test in 2006. Major League Baseball won't identify the drug, but "sources" classsify it as a "serious stimulant." Bonds blames the test result on teammate Mark Sweeney, saying he got the substance from Sweeney's locker.

Is cancer performance enhacing? Robin Parisotto, a former Australian Institute of Sport researcher, takes issue with claims that Lance Armstrong's testicular cancer actually helped him during the Tour de France

posted by Fence at 05:38 AM on December 15

Cancer didn't directly help Armstrong win the TdF, but rather what it did to his body. Prior to the cancer Lance had the build of a sprinter or a one-day Classics-type cyclist, after (and because of) the cancer he lost quite a bit of weight (especially upper body mass) and became much more of a climber and stage race general classification contender.

Bonds not offered Arbitration Who is Barry going to play for next year? My guess is an American league contender, possibly the Yankees

posted by texasred at 06:18 AM on December 04

My crystal ball says he'll be back as a Giant for around $10 million. Magowan et al know that Barry fills seats but dont wanna blow their wad on him - hence the Manny rumors, arbitration, etc.

EUROPEAN FIELDS The landscape of Lower League Football. by Hans Van Der Meer. 85 photographs in colour of amateur-football in twenty-two different European countries. From Amazon: "At the beginning of the 1995 soccer season, Hans van der Meer set out to take photographs of the game that dodged the cliched traditions of modern sports photography. In an attempt to record the sport in its original form--a field, two goals and 22 players--he sought matches at the bottom end of the amateur leagues. He avoided tight telescopic details and the hyperbole of action photography, pulled back from the central subject of the pitch, and set the playing field and its unfolding action in the context of local elements. Over the last 10 years, Van der Meer has continued this project across the playing fields of Europe, traveling to every country with a significant history of the game. ... Van der Meer's understated observations of the poetry and absurdity of human behavior on the field use soccer to consider--and provoke a laugh at--the human condition." Published in hardcover and paperback. (via kottke)

Dick Pounded Again Over Lab's Leaky Security and Procedures WADA Chairman Dick Pound is once again standing by the French laboratory that tested Tour de France Champion Floyd Landis' urine sample, even though their computers have been hacked into and they've admitted a clerical error in the labeling of Landis' "B" sample.

You think I'm joking, don't you? Heh. Unfortunately I know you're not. Also, rumor has it they're signing Tyler "I'm innocent I tell ya" Hamilton. Innocent is the new guilty!

The entire world of pro cycling's become a farce. From the riders who never come forward to the mistake-making labs to the organizing bodies who somehow grant a license to Manolo Saiz, the one guy who was caught red handed... Nonetheless I eagerly await the Spring Classics :)

Lance Armstrong runs NYC Marathon in less than three hours Impressive, considering. Says Armstrong, ""For the level of condition that I have now, that was without a doubt the hardest physical thing I have ever done, I never felt a point where I hit the wall, it was really a gradual progression of fatigue and soreness."

2:59:36? That kinda time, given Lance's goal of a sub 3 hr, smells fishy. I wonder if Nike made the timing chip inside his shoes? ;) Also, I gotta think he's pretty pissed at not beating Jalabert's (a Frenchie!) time...
