Baseball Reading List

The Baseball Reader books are still the best. Roger Angell gathers the best short stories written by classic sports journalists. Other treats I would recommend are "Bums" about the Brooklyn Dodgers and "Dynasty" about the Yankees 1930s to 1960s. Great stuff.

Prefer a language you don't understand over Dave O'Brien?

Dave Obrain(mispelled on purpose) mispronounced at least 20 player's names. Any player not sporting an anglo name was mispronounced over and over again to the point where it sounded like he was doing it on purpose. Balboa's just awful. For Christ's sake, how many times can one person say the words "but still" in 90 minutes. Well, quite a bit, if you're Balboa. Like 20 times a game. I also switched to Univision, though the reception is not quite is good. The gripe for me is why didn't ESPN think about hiring commentators who know the damn game?!?! It's like they didn't care and that pisses me off.

But Does He Pitch or Catch?

I refer anyone interested to the album "Failure" by King Missile. See the song "Gay/Not Gay" It explains all.

Get ready to dislike America

Soccer is what you put your kid in when he/she is to little to play Football (American) and Tee Ball Your loss. You don't know what you are missing. I'm completely done with american football(Eagles fan). Soccer is much more fun on many levels. And just imagine-whole nations grind to a halt to follow their teams, not just 18-60 year old males like the NFL. At least you could root for the USA(do it quick because they won't be there long).

Bud says no celebration for Barry

I hope it happens in Philly. The way the Phil's pitcher's are playing, it probably will. He will be drowned in boos, I think. Although we are very tough on "villianous" opponents, we did give Mario Lemieux a very long ovation upon his 1st retirement. I was actually proud of the crowd at that Flyers game.

Selig didn't say anything about "stepping foot on the diamond". That's the poster's quote. I can't believe I'm sticking up for Selig, but there you go.

National Disgrace

So, the Phillies must be on angel dust, cause they suck and blow. Did anyone see Abreu trying to deal with flyballs yesterday? Sorry, I don't have anything funny to say about assholes who drive drunk. Except... ASSHOLES, Please drive off a cliff.

An Englishman's view of an American sports icon.

Great article, thanks. I see it as yet another way youth is being programmed to conform to the cheap, tawdry, witless American Idol, pro-wrestling, beer ad, fake tits, nose job, Super Bowl hype type life style. Bastards. If you're literary indulgence mainly consists of USA Today, your attention span will be taxed.

America's Favorite Player Released.

It won't be fun for whoever gets him. I live in Philly and I have seen first hand his emotional rollercoaster on display. He's happy in the beginning and he plays like "the" best WR in the NFL. Then, at the 1st sign of anything negative that either indirectly or directly affects him, his whole psyche falls apart and he WILL find a way to create a crisis.

Believe me, the less REAL people there are in the public eye, the worse off we all are. Cheney was a real person, who was not afraid to speak his mind, even about politics. The people who didn't like him probably didn't agree with his view of how life should be lived, with a conscience, working brain, etc.

Bud Selig must be chugging bottles of Pepto. As if the Bonds' debacle wasn't debilitating enough. I must say, I wasn't upset on finding this news. Although the WBC is an intriguing idea in embryo, I've often imagined it to be no more than another greed-driven revenue enhancing trick. And in that case, I'm glad it seems to be less than spectacularrrrrrr, for the US, that is.
