Wie gets playoff victory over Webb : Great Headline. Except that the winner was Se Ri Pak. Worse part is, that Wie and Pak don't even look alike. Except for that Asian thing.

NBA players' financial security no slam dunk

It might feel nice to see the NBA players taken down a peg after their careers, but unfortunately, most of us would probably find ourselves in the same situation. Take a look at the number of lottery winners who blow through their cash, or on a smaller scale, the number of kids who spend way more than they earn after they get their first real job out of college. Take a look at the sub-prime lending mess we are in. The loans themselves were not the problem, the problem was that people used the easy availability of the loans to buy more house than they needed. Talk to the survivors of the Great Depression, and it's easy to see the differences between their attitudes on saving and spending and the attitudes of today. I'm sure there's more than a few people here who carry a wee bit more credit debt than they'd like, and will likely spend years paying it off. How many here have the recommended six months salary saved up in case of job loss or emergency? I'm only up at two months myself, but trying to get there.

Leave Steve Bartman Alone!

Perhaps in addition to blowing up the Bartman ball, if Cubs fans burn down the Billy Goat Tavern, execute a goat, and fry up a black cat, maybe then they can finally win. That's much easier than say, actually putting together a farm system and a team that can compete on a consistent basis, year in and year out.

Leave Steve Bartman Alone!

I agree. Bartman's weren't the only sets of hands going for that foul ball. He was just the unfortunate one to have gotten to it first. If Alou keeps his cool, maybe the Cubs don't implode. If Gonzalez fields the ball, he turns the double play and the inning is over. If Baker does what a manager is supposed to do and talks to Prior to make sure he's settled down after all of this, maybe he pitches his way out of the inning. If Kerry Wood holds the lead in the 7th game, and so on. Or perhaps if the Cubs weren't so......Cubbish, none of this would ever have happened. Ah, I'll just settle back, cheer for the Cubs again, and brace myself for the pain of yet another heartbreak, or the shock of finally pulling it off. Although, I worry that if the Cubs do win, there will immediately be hundreds of thousands of people who finally cash in on their promise to "Die happy if the Cubs ever win the World Series again".

Rickey hangs 'em up.

I personally believe that bolo165 would vote Rickey Henderson in on the first ballot. I believe that bolo165 would do that if he had a vote. I regret that bolo165 doesn't in fact have a vote, and I want to make it clear that bolo165 humbly apologizes for speaking in the fourth person to make this comment.

Chief Illiniwek hits the bench

Personally, I prefer Mascots that can be hunted down and/or eaten. Banana Slugs? Mmmmmmm, delicious.

Dad intervenes during his son's wrestling match.

More information about the story can be found in my area paper, the Chicago Daily Herald. (Sorry, can't post links yet). Hoffman was said to be a part-time wrestling coach. According to the article, he apologized, was embarassed about his actions, and is no longer a coach for the team. As a coach, maybe he saw something more that was going on. According to the story, Hoffman was yelling at the other kids dad, "This is not how the sport is done. This is not how the sport is to be coached." Interestingly enough, the tournament was called "The St. Valentine's Day Massacre."

Tim Hardaway, the yin to Jon Amaechi's yang:

It's hate speech, and there is nothing wrong with pointing that out. Hardaway has the right to spout it. Now, as anyone who chooses to exercise their First Amendment rights, he has to live with the consequences. Remember, the First Amendment only guarantees that you can say it. It doesn't guarantee that people continue to admire you/support you/buy your stuff just because you exercised your FA rights. By the way, lil brown bat, your comment on straight bashing of course made me look it up. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Violence_against_gays,_lesbians,_bisexuals,_and_the_transgendered Interesting, I had no idea 2% of hate crime was directed against heterosexuals.

Streak or no streak, Tiger Woods is simply a roaring golf success

Let's get back to the subject matter, people. What's Tiger's stance on midgets? I believe Federer has a much more European, cosmopolitan outlook on the subject.

Mexico's Ayala Out For Season

Interesting discussion. I have actually enjoyed watching the WBC, and the seemingly immediate rivalries that have sprung up, especially amongst the latin countries participating. However, the Nationals seem to have gotten the raw end of the deal on this one. Obviously, Selig and the MLB didn't anticipate how to deal with an issue like this. They seemed to be so interested in lending prestige to the WBC, by ensuring that major league players were involved, that they forgot what is the best advertising for the MLB, good teams riding their studs from the start to the finish line in exciting pennant races. If they continue with this WBC experiment, they should at least give the teams the right of refusal for any of their contracted plalyers who are coming off an injury and/or surgery. If the players were healthy and ready to go, then it's their choice. Teams take out insurance for their players contracts, but that doesn't mean that their most vulnerable players should be exposed to unnecessary risks. Spring training, simulated games, bullpen sessions, BP, rehab - these are NECESSARY risks for a player coming off an injury. The WBC wasn't.
