Sports Bio

Baseball is my first and most enduring love, sports-wise. I'm a die-hard Cubs and Red Sox fan(I'm bit of a baseball masochist, and I'm one of those Bull Durham, baseball philosopher types.) I'm also quite a college hoops junkie(Illinois, and the rest of the Big 10 to a lesser degree.) I try to keep up with international soccer and MLS as well, with varying degrees of success. I don't much care for the NBA, NFL, and NHL, though I do casually follow them from time to time, when the local teams(Bulls, Blackawks, Bears) are playing fairly well.

Oh my gosh. Now this is an upset.

Everyone here in Paris is in shock, well, including me. I only saw the second half, where things seemed to be in sort of a sloppy deadlock, the US desperately defending, and the Portuguese even more desperately doing the opposite, but Portugal must have just been horrible in the first, especially considering that Reyna and Mathis didn't even play. Wow.

World Cup meets the Weblog

Oh, come on now. I know our overall quality of play is rather poor, but i've gotta defend Tab Ramos. He probably could have started for a lower-tier Premiership team at his height. Hell, if John Harkes(who played for Coventry I think, and who I was never very impressed by) could do it, Tab certainly could have. He almost single-handedly kept us in our game with Brazil in WC '94, and was probably the best overall player on our national team for most of the '90's. Also, while MLS is lousy overall, the best teams have beaten European and South American sides in friendlies and in various international club tournaments. It's definitely improving, and is probably on the level of most first division European leagues at this point. Still not great, but not unwatchable, either.
