After almost 30 years, Thurman Munson still has a place in Yankee history. His widow, Diane Munson, wonders what will happen to his locker when the Yankees move to a new stadium. His locker is kept empty in his honor.

Ex-players to picket HOF Some former NFL'ers, wanting to draw attention to the inadequate retirement benefits of some, and their dissatisfaction with the NFLPA leadership, are hoping to make a statement in Canton, Ohio this summer.

NFL Union Screwing Players? The folks over at ArsTechnica have focused on an interesting story: claims that the NFLPA and Players Inc. unilaterally made a decision to take $8 million dollars of the gross licensing revenue that should have been shared with retired players and reallocate it to the administration of the NFLPA and Players Inc.", while negotiating ridiculous royalities for older players.

Thanks for that bit of info YYM.
So I guess that is a double edged sword. If you have your name/image copyrighted, EA just works around you. Hmmmmm. IDK if Bonds, Parcells, and Belichick have trademarked themselves, but that would be why they aren't mentioned in the games, right?

Good thing all the players are wearing those Gene Upshaw memorial patches, huh?
posted by wfrazerjr at 10:42 AM
Yeah, fraz, but at least it is a little sticker on the back of the helmet instead of the big GU patch on the upper left front of the jersey. Much easier to ignore.
I wonder if we will be seeing more, if any players copyrighting their images, or having exclusive license for their likeness, signature, name, etc., etc. like Dale Earnhardt did. Then wouldn't EA have to deal with each player individually?

Is William Shattner the new head of marketing for the Blues? The St. Louis Blues have announced a "Name Your Price" ticket sale where, like Priceline or Hotwire, fans can make an offer for tickets. It's believed to be the first such offer made by a pro sports franchise, but not all fans are thrilled about it.

Bug: Spofi eats comments Apparently if a comment is considered "too long" (I'm guessing), Spofi simply trashes it without warning or option for recovery.

New Stadiums: Prices, and Outrage, Escalate But even as fans of the Mets, the Yankees, the Giants and the Jets look forward to state-of-the-art stadium architecture, better sightlines, wider concourses and more bathrooms, some of them are also facing startling increases in ticket costs during a serious economic downturn.......The Giants Mara offered a blunt lesson in market-driven economics on WFAN radio this month. We have 130,000 people on our waiting list,-- he said. We could charge anything and still fill the stadium.--

Makes me glad I broke down and finally got cable. No, I don't have the NFL Network, but I will still get to see a lot of games...from the comfort of my nice chair, ice cold beer at about $1.25 a bottle (MGD) snacks at bargain prices, a clean bathroom with no wait, and no goofs who stand up in front of me.
The stadium experience it great, but not when you have to take out a payday loan to have it.
BTW, I got a free Giants fleece jacket from SI when I renewed my subscription. That is all the $$$ they are gonna get from me.
Why do you support who you do? Interesting discussion going on in an Ask MetaFilter thread.

I am a Steeler fan (rather than a Browns fan) because I labored for 24yrs in a steel mill here in beautiful Canton, Ohio. Before that, I was a Raiders fan because I liked their "just win, baby" attitude and how they would take players off the scrap heap and go to the Super Bowl with them. (a long time ago, I know) But I will watch any teams play and love to talk football.
I casually follow the Indians and the Cavs because they are the "local" teams.
In hockey it is the New Jersey Devils because I am a BIG fan of Martin Brodeur. That will probably change when he retires.
College is Mount Union even thought they are a small school. I grew up around the Alliance, Ohio area and my sis-in-law and neice are alumi.
I followed NASCAR til R.J. Reynolds pulled out and they started futzing with the rules. Now I just glance at the standings once in a while.

Nice story, Ms. Bat!
The monster fish is in Hayes' freezer. He's retiring the Barbie fishing rod, and will buy Alyssa a new one. A friend plans to mount the fish and rod for him.
I hope he gives the mounted fish and rod to Alyssa. It will look good on her wall if she becomes some high powered attorney/executive!
NFLPA Director Gene Upshaw Dies Gene Upshaw, the Hall of Fame offensive lineman for the Oakland Raiders who has led the NFL Players Association as executive director for 24 years, has died of pancreatic cancer at age 63.

yzelda, I have searched a bit and all I can find is Upshaw was executive director in 1983 and played a big part in the strike of 1987 (don't know too much about the strike of '82) So I don't know if being E.D. is the "head" or not. Currently the president is Kevin Mawae of the Tennessee Titans. And Richard Berthelsen has been appointed interim Executive Director.
The cancer must have come on really quick or he ignored symtoms. To find out and die that fast...wow!
Rays Walk Hamilton Intentionally with Bases Loaded The Tampa Bay Rays made history Sunday night, walking Josh Hamilton of the Texas Rangers on purpose with the bases loaded so they could face Marlon Byrd, who struck out to cement a 7-4 Rays win. The intentional walk was the first time in 107 years that an American League player was walked intentionally with the bases full and only the fifth overall since 1900. "You don't pitch to Superman when you have Wonder Woman on deck," said Rays closer Troy Percival.

Gee, lbb, I took the remark to mean you don't pitch to Superman because you have some one after him who could really knock one out of the park and bring everyone home. After all, Superman might have hit a single and only brought one runner home.
I'd say they went with the known quanity rather than take a chance of 4 more runs. But while I am familiar with Josh Hamilton, I do not know that much of Marlon Byrd.
Phelps Wins Ninth Medal with World-Record 400 American swimmer Michael Phelps shattered his own world record by 1.41 seconds in the 400-meter individual medley, finishing in 4:03.84 for his first gold medal of the 2008 Olympics and his ninth overall. He's hoping to win seven more.
