Sports Bio

Born and raised in Minnesota, so I am a Vikings/Timberwolves/Twins/Wild fan. But I also live in Colorado, so I am a Broncos/Nuggets/Avalanche/Rockies fan.

Love all sports, but my passions lie with Football and Golf and Hockey.

"I expected it to be kind of a factory setting...and what I found was a very loving, somewhat casual environment...they weren't factories, they were more like gardens." On NPR's Only a Game, Daniel Coyle talks about where great athletic talent comes from, as further described in his article How to Grow a Super-Athlete (NY Times Play magazine).

James Oyebola's life support to be switched off. On Monday, after asking 3 men to stop smoking, ex-British Heavyweight champion James Oyebola was shot. In the face. Today, after doctor's pronounced him brain dead, his life support is to be switched off.

It's stories such as the last three that make the Mike Vick and Pacman stories so much more frustrating. Here we have a young girl killed by a softball, a great college coach dying way too young, and a boxer shot and killed by two idiots because he asked them to not smoke. This has been a very depressing few weeks for sports news and discussions. I am to the point where I don't want to read sports, listen to talk radio or tv. Godspeed to the little girl, the coach and the boxer. '

Chris Simon cheap shot (via YouTube). The clothesline with the stick to Hollweg's face put the Rangers on the PP, allowing them to capitalize and score the GW goal. There has been talk on sports radio this morning that they would like to see Simon suspended into next year.

Simon has always been a dirty player. He pushes the dirty "envelope" everytime his is on the ice. One year minimum, and if I were Hollweg, I would file charges. I love hockey, I like the fights, but this is just play ridiculous.

Who's the Daddy? Eighty-five times he's pushed his disabled son, Rick, 26.2 miles in Marathons. Eight times he's not only pushed him 26.2 miles in a wheelchair but also towed him 2.4 miles in a dinghy while swimming and pedaled him 112 miles in a seat on the handlebars - all in the same day. [I can't seem to get the original of this from SI, but this one includes an embedded YouTube link at the end]

What inspiration. I cried. I know that there are many wonderful stories in this world, I only wish we could hear about more of them, instead of all the crap that goes on in this world. My sincerest thanks JJ for the article. Peace to all of you.

You Can't Stop Deadspin; You Can Only Hope to Contain It PRWeek profiles Deadspin.Com "dorky and corn-fed" editor Will Leitch, whose influential, sarcastic and ESPN-mocking sports blog is fast becoming the New York Yankees to SportsFilter's Detroit Tigers.

deadspin.com is basically crap. lame comments and lame content. I'll stick with SportsFilter thanks.

Tiger Does It Again!

posted by danjel at 06:47 PM on January 29

Accepted, but the key there is the word "contention". When there is an actual battle for the win, people are interested. But when Tiger is running away from the field......

Tiger Does It Again!

posted by danjel at 06:47 PM on January 29

Food for thought. I love Tiger as a person, he is a phenom to say the least. But, is he good for golf? I have heard many comments on the course that they loose interest in watching golf because the results are a foregone conclusion. They have more interest in watching when Tiger isn't playing. I personally enjoy watching Tiger sometimes, and other times it gets boring watching the same guy win over and over. It is not unlike when Jack was so dominating and so many people hated him for beating their favorite players like Arnie, Lee and Gary. Also, when it comes to stating who is the best golfer ever, how do you really compare Tiger against Jack or Arnie. It's like comparing apples to oranges. Different generations of equipment, courses, etc. make it almost impossible to compare them. I realize that Tiger is one of the greatest golfers I have ever watched. He can hit shots no one else would even attempt. But I am just saying... Open for discussion.

One Toke Over The Line, Ron Mexico... Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick "reluctantly" turned over a water bottle to TSA agents at the Miami-Dade International Airport yesterday. Upon closer inspection, the bottle had a hidden compartment containing "a dark particulate" and emanating "a pungent aroma closely associated with marijuana." Considering that Ron Mexico's had at least one TSA problem before, why would you even try to get something through security?

Laissez Les Bon Temps Roulez! Don't hate them because they're beautiful. Even if they do win the NFC Championship, even if, wonder of wonders, they win the Super Bowl, you shouldn't hate the New Orleans Saints. Sportsfilter's own The_Black_Hand explains why he's giving some love to the Saints, and why you should, too.

Black Hand - nice story. I was stationed at the Naval Reserve headquarters in New Orleans from 1982-1986. The first year there, I won season tickets to the Saints in a welfare and recreation raffle the base had. It was GREAT. The people of New Orleans now how to party, and they do so every Sunday of football season at the Dome. Back then, they didn't really care if they won or not, they just came to party. Now, after Katrina, and with the Saints playing so well, they still party, but they are partying WITH the Saints. Like you said, you just can't hate the Saints. I will be pulling for them this weekend (and hopefully again in the SuperBowl).

Favre angry that NFL turns its back on Robinson "I don't like the way the league has, in my mind, turned their back on him," Favre said.

posted by wingnut4life at 03:40 AM on October 19

I agree with Favre. If it were not for the image problem they already had, I think the Vikings would have loved to have kept Robinson. This man needs help, he needs friends and he needs support. The NFL needs to get of their collective asses and do something to help these guys.

posted by SDM at 01:07 PM on October 11

I love this rule. I wish the NFL would do the same for all the whining WR's always begging for a flag when they miss a pass. Just shut up and play ball.

Back in the day when the Twins played out doors, they used to have an advertisement on the top of the scoreboard in right field. On TOP of the scoreboard they had this tree, which was an advertisement for a bank. Reggie Jackson came up to bat, and smacked the snot of out it. Not only did he hit the tree on top of the scoreboard, but the ball was still on the way UP when it hit the tree. It would have been way out into the parking lot if not for that tree.

Commentary on Zidane's gesture by Dany Laferrière In the old, bloody fables of the Brothers Grimm, it was acceptable to have a red card ending. But today, in this strange epoch when everyone seems to have drunk Disney milk in their infancy, no one tolerates anything but rosy endings. Everything must finish happily. Our heroes must be loveable so that we can file them away in the cupboard of our happy memories. So where does that leave Zidane?
(...)
Young rappers will surely introduce into their video clips the eight seconds where Zidane left the game to re-enter their stifling reality.

A whole different take on the Zidane incident...

posted by fabulon7 at 02:44 PM on July 20

I admit to being one of those who could not understand Zidane's actions when it happened, but after reading this piece, I think I now understand. I think Zidane now sleeps better at night, knowing he ended his career on his terms. Excellent post, thank you.
