Sports Bio

I saw the last Marino/Elway matchup in Miami; I was at the 32-29 Florida/Florida State game (the year after UF won the NC by beating FSU 52-20; UF lost to AUB and their season was over; underdogs at home against #1-ranked FSU, Spurrier played rotating QBs and won the best college football game ever to ruin the 'Noles chances at the title); was at the 1st Bucs MNF win over the Packers; grew up in Daytona and attended the 500 often (though not a NASCAR fan)

Miami dominated. Florida flopped.:

I spent nine months thinking about 'next year' and it pretty much ended right at the beginning. It was incredible to have such a premier game so early in the season, but to be on the losing end is crushingly depressing. A home loss decimates any hopes of a national championship, and without that ... well ... is there really any other point to the season?

At Florida it's all about beating FSU and shooting for the SEC Championship (beating Georgia, Tennessee) ... but even if we manage to do that it will only bring a small solace after taking such a beating.

What do you do when you have to wait 10 or 12 games and another nine months to be hopeful again? Does anyone else know that feeling?

(Insult to Injury: Also a Red Sox fan.)

Giants Win Superbowl!

I'm a Pats fan sitting in the PHX airport (the world's friendliest airport! with free wifi!) waiting for my flight back to ... y'know ... work. Some additional comments: I've seen Petty a dozen times -- I went to UF -- and this was the best concert of his I've seen. I can't say it was the best SB concert ever, because I thought the Stones put on a great show a while back, but it was pretty damn awesome. And, no, I can tell you for certain he was not lip-synching. Throughout the halftime show there was a teenaged girl standing in the aisle next to me who had one responsibility: Shine a very large light at the ceiling of the stadium in random patterns. There were at least five other people doing this at other spots in the stadium. It was pretty funny. A few gabillion dollars spent on marketing and advertising and whatnot, and here's a girl getting paid $14.75 to stand in the aisle and shine a flashlight for a while. It seemed like the whole stadium was rooting for the upset for the whole game. The Giants won the game. It's hard to believe, but it's true. I'm pretty bitter, but I'm not even going to go into a rant about how it was really that "the Patriots lost the game". The Giants won. The fat, drunk, loud, obnoxious New Yorker who sat next to me on the bus ride back to the hotel after the game was, I feel, my punishment for trying to defend Bellicheck's scoring assaults earlier in the year. The Wendy's in the D terminal in PHX has nine employees on the clock and still manages to provide embarrassingly bad service. Apple put postcards inside the seat cushions with an iTunes code you could use to download highlights of the game. Slick marketing.

Giants Win Superbowl!

I sat in seat 15, row 10, section 118. Plaxico caught the winner right in my face. It was brutal to watch as a Pats fan. From the stadium, we couldn't tell that BB left early. That really stinks if it's true. (I'm a Pats fan but will easily admit that BB isn't exactly lovable.) When the Pats went ahead 14-10, I turned to the guy next to me and said, "They left too much time on the clock." Ugh.

And another one ... Touchdowns now worth nine points; Longer field goals worth more.

Derek Freakin' Lowe pitched a no-hitter for the Red Sox!

I was flipping through the channels on a lazy afternoon in Los Angeles. I stopped just for a millisecond on ESPN to wonder how they could possibly be airing another "World's Strongest Man" competition in the middle of the day. Just as I was about to give up hope of finding any good sports and start watching Martha Stewart, the boys formerly based in Bristol switched over to bring me the last two outs of the no-hitter. My girlfriend was outside but heard me whooping it up; I was cheering for my boy Lowe so loudly. What a great surprise! (Note: ESPN returned to the WSM immediately after Derek's post-game interview.)

2002 NFL Schedule released.

Anyone catch the baseball preview issue of SI (2 wks ago)? There was a great article re: Spurrier signing Danny, 'Quez, and Doering ... I always hated the 'Skins 'cause I was an Emmitt Smith (therefore Dallas) fan, so it will be strange to now be rooting for the 'Skins every week ...
