the dallas cowboys are the first nfl installation. for us amateurs, you can try it out at several different locations. has anyone played or seen this surface?

troy aikman lands top analyst spot on fox. while countless booth personalities languished behind madden/summerall for decades at cbs and fox, troy only had to wait a year.
sorry fellow cowboy fans, but it looks like summerall really is going to announce most of the cowboys games. sigh.

nobody said he couldn't coach. texas tech (15-3) rips the number six rated oklahoma sooners at home, 92-79, avenging a blowout loss in norman two weeks ago. bobby knight has turned the red raiders into winners. can he keep it together and make lubbock, texas a perennial college hoops powerhouse?

8 Ways To Improve The NFL It seems like everybody can suggest 8 ways to improve the NFL, and about 6 of these ways are always the same ideas.

Warner chosen over Manning The New York Football Giants have decided on age over beauty , at least to start the year. The decision seems to have been made mostly on the fact that Manning has been deeply underwhelming in the preseason so far.
Do you think it'll matter who's QBing this year for them? I have to admit I don't.

ok for those viewers who are not fervent nfl fans, or how might be reading this thread beyond the confines of the continental united states.... quarterbacking is hard. dan marino didn't start out of the gate his rookie season, john elway was benched during his, and troy aikman only managed one win. all of those players are/will be in the nfl hall of fame. there is no reason to get upset about manning starting or not starting at this point. obviously warner is a superbowl winning qb, and if it were my team, i'd throw him out there for the first part of the season too. even though he really does suck.
Puerto Rico 92, U.S. 73 Anyone really surprised?

Whither Forrest Gump? "...table tennis is an intense sport with all the earmarks of big-time athletics -- steroid scandals, colorful characters, Byzantine romances and groupies. Also, there's a lot of glue sniffing."

If this is true, the 49ers really screwed TO and he should definitely fire his agent now. That said, because of all his ranting and raving, he probably had it coming.

Carolina Panthers are going to the Super Bowl! Who'd have thought it two years ago, after the Cats were 1-15? Well, it happened as Carolina sent the Philadelphia Eagles to their third consecutive NFC Championship game loss, by the score of 14 to 3. Up next, the New England Patriots, who knocked off the Indianapolis Colts at Foxboro today by the score of 24 to 14.

The wheels on the coaching bus go round and round! While no one will go hungry, three more NFL coaches have taken their last fat per diem for their franchises. Buffalo chickened out on Gregg Williams, Chicago gave the shuffle to Dick Jauron and Arizona flipped the bird to Dave McGinnis and his entire staff. Meanwhile, everyone in a Raiders uni today called Bill Callahan the Antichrist or worse. How many deserved the axe, and how many just had lousy teams, luck or both?

The Football Gods reward a Football Nomad. Yup, Gregg Easterbrook's Tuesday Morning Quarterback -- once of Slate, then of ESPN.com, and late of FootballOutsiders.com -- is on the move yet again. This time he lands, appropriately enough, at NFL.com.

Notably absent were his gripes about the games chosen by networks... perhaps because he can't criticize those with which the NFL has a partnership? That's a section I look foward to every week, because every week I am forced to watch utterly horrible games because I can't get Sunday Ticket here. no jabs at danny snyder/steve spurrier either. (the sunday ticket riff is one of my favorite gags, too)
A LiveJournal user delivers ... A LiveJournal user delivers pizza to Jacksonville Jaguars running back Fred Taylor and says he's such a lousy tipper that "I hope he breaks his hip and has to retire." My brother-in-law was Nate Newton's neighbor and revealed he never said hello on the street, making his subsequent legal troubles more fun for us. What trivial real-life encounters with athletes have colored your impressions of them forever?

Pro Football Overtime has officially outstayed its welcome.
While it may beat the alternative, cries to change the way OT is played in the NFL are getting louder. Though hardly a new issue, this recent article in the New York Times (registration and first born son required) speaks to the righteous fury of every angry fan who's had to watch their team lose in OT without ever having a chance to field the offense. The NYT is hardly alone in its indignation and I can't help but feel the same way.
While it could reasonably be argued that the excitement and intensity of an NFL OT is tough to beat, the real bottom line has likely more to do with network scheduling than drama; not quite what I would consider the prime consideration of an athletic competition. Call me old fashioned.
And what about issues of fairness? When the flip of a coin has a 99.9% mathematical certainty of affecting the ultimate outcome of OT, the game becomes a lot more luck and a lot less skill.
Unsurprisingly, the inertia bound NFL says "Meh" to the whole issue, so proponents of OT reform will just have to wait until a Superbowl or Conference Playoff is decided by one lucky return and one lucky field goal to see the League shamed into improving the system.
Kvetching about the sad state of NFL OT has become an almost yearly event. Maybe it's time to think outside the box?

jackhererra: agreed. if you don't want to lose without touching the ball in overtime, upgrade your kickoff specialist and defense. that said, i'll support just getting rid of the coin flip and kickoff for overtime, if that prevents montrosities like the college ot system, or automatically giving the ot kicking team an offensive series. the team with the ball at the end of regulation keeps it, at the same position on the field. what could be simpler?
Corey Dillon Wants Out. The Cincinnti Bengals running back has apparently had enough. In front of several reporters, Dillon requested a trade to Dallas. Does he stay? Does he go? Will Marvin Lewis maintain the status quo?

Dillon skipped the first voluntary minicamp under Lewis, and was the only regular to show up late for training camp. Lewis has urged him to talk to the media regularly, but has been rebuffed. from here. just what the cowboys need, a talented, lazy, malcontent. give me troy hambrick, anyday. he might not get 100 yards a game, but he'll stick his helmet on a linebacker to pick up the blitz, or block for the fullback, or do whatever the heck is neccessary for the team to be successful.
Last week, Sports Illustrated ... Last week, Sports Illustrated writer Peter King watched an NFL game from the stands for the first time in 20 years, learning what a chore it is to slog through endless TV timeouts: "three minutes of downtime after a punt, then three minutes of downtime five minutes later after another punt ... four times a quarter. ... they were absolute killers." (Via the recently mocked King Kaufman)
