Students push teacher to reach Olympics You've heard about sports stories that are too good to be true. This one is too good not to be true. A whimsical bet with students propels this teacher to a date with a hammer in Beijing.

"Fight Money": In Japanese baseball many teams give each player a $1,000 bonus for a win. Yankees left-hander Kei Igawa says, "It's like bait." Would it fly in MLB? Fukuoka Hawks reliever C.J. Nitkowski says, "It's ashtray change at best."

holden - I agree I think this is more of an 'atta boy, rather than any kind of salary increase. And its only for player(s) that did a good job for that one game. We have a similar thing here at work where a person who did a good job on a project or an had an innovative idea is given a $50 gift certificate in front of the rest of the team. The $50 isn't that big of a deal, but it's nice to be recognized. For the multimillionaire's in baseball today, I don't see where this fits in. If they can't find a reason to be motivated while making $100,000 or more PER game, then they are in the wrong business.
Eagles boot Giants, while Patriots take Jets.

I wouldn't get too pumped if I was an Eagles fan. The fact that they only beat the Giants by 3 is pretty sad. And even if they do make the bowl, the Pats, Ravens, Colts, Chargers (take your pick) will destroy them. So, Philly, be prepared for some dissapointment of your own. Antwan: Us Philly fans are just happy they made it after a really odd season. The chances of getting anywhere from here on is slim, but its better than a lot of other teams that have already cleaned out there lockers!
Nick Saban to leave Dolphins for Alabama Nick Saban is 'Bama bound. Ending five weeks of speculation and two days of deliberation, Saban accepted the Alabama coaching job and abandoned his bid to rebuild the Miami Dolphins after only two seasons.

Hockey...er...Ball. Hockey stats leave alot to the imagination. Hopefully, not for long. Fans of the game are embarking on a statistical revolution: expanding the limited scope of current player data, and establishing entirely new standards for measuring true on-ice productivity. Greg Wyshynski talks to the man behind hockey-recap.com, my new favorite resource. hockey fans are being mislead by the current numbers. He calls plus/minus "worthless"

While not exactly a 'stat' site exactly, hockeydb.com has some great searching features. I love clicking on a player and seeing his history, including college and euro leagues, etc... And each year for that player is clickable so you can see the teams roster for each year.

'Don't You Need at Least One Good Quarterback to Make a Controversy?' Fort Worth Star-Telegram columnist Gil LeBreton asks that question after Dallas Cowboys QBs combined for four interceptions -- no, wait, Tony Romo just threw another -- in the Monday night loss to the New York Giants. Romo entered last night's game "to a standing ovation and chants of 'Romo, Romo, Romo,'" according to the Associated Press. "The cheers didn't die down until his first pass was swatted by Michael Strahan and intercepted by Antonio Pierce."

It's Time for me to Fly...er. Philadelphia Flyers General Manager Bobby Clarke quits and coach Ken Hitchcock is fired after the Flyers' worst start since the 1989-90 season. What happened the last time the Flyers opened the season 1-6-1? Bobby Clarke was fired as GM.

UT tells woman she cheers too much Tennessee fan Victoria Caldwell said she was speechless after receiving a call from the UT Athletic Department on Thursday. Fans seated near her in Neyland Stadium would have a hard time believing that. Caldwell, a first-time season ticket holder, said UT's Bill Higdon called her at home and said other fans had complained about her. Their complaint? She cheers too much.

Canes ship stud D-man prospect Jack Johnson to the Kings. The Canes wanted last year's 3rd overall draft pick Johnson to play for them. He wanted to keep playing for the University of Michigan Wolverines. They blinked and traded away somebody that - who knows - could be an NHL star. Your trivia answer is then "for defenceman Tim Gleason and centre Eric Belanger".

Yea wingnut, thats what I heard.. You figure in 3 years anything could happen... I don't blame them for making this move but I'll be the first to say 'Damn' when Johnson turns into a stud say 5 years out. This may be the worst move they have made so far, but only time will tell... They sure made a great move grabbing Brind'Amour from the Flyers back in the day.. Can you tell I'm a jilted Philly sports fan??
Madden Jinx? Shaun Alexander rushed for 187 yards through three games, which is less than a thousand projected yards throughout the entire season (997 to be exact). Not to mention he was on pace for only eleven rushing touchdowns. Terrible numbers for a guy who rushed for 1880 last year and had 27 rushing tds.
