Casualties of the NFL: The fits, when they come, turn him as white as the walls and send unself-conscious tears down his cheeks. It's DeMarco at 35: dirt-poor, broken, and in a headfirst spiral, taking his wife and children down with him. .... "There was no food in the house, and I mean none -- not a box of mac and cheese or a can of tuna ..... Brian and Autumn hadn't eaten in a couple of days and between them had 75 cents. Total." A harrowing account of post-NFL experiences.

The best athletes ever, by number. A team of SI.com's finest numerologists crunched the data on jersey numbers to come up with the best performers (across all sports) at each number from 00 to 99 (Eddie Gaedel was a lock at 1/8).

As for #34, I have to agree with the choice of Walter Payton. However, being from Houston, I'm proud that the #34 will be retired in all 3 major sports in Houston. Three greats (in three different sports) wore that number, and all are (or will be) in the Hall of Fame in their respective sport. Nolan Ryan, Earl Campbell, Hakeem Olajuwon. Can't wait for Houston to get an NHL franchise, to see who will wear that number.
"Slugout in the Dugout" Sinks Cubs To New Low Carlos Zambrano finally gave fans the meltdown they've been waiting for, slugging it out with Michael Barrett in the dugout and clubhouse Friday. Great way to spend your 26th birthday, Carlos; get shelled then embarrass the team a bit more (if that's possible).

Boy, 11, bags hog bigger than 'Hogzilla' An 11-year-old boy used a pistol to kill a wild hog his father says weighed a staggering 1,051 pounds and measured 9 feet 4, from the tip of its snout to the base of its tail.

Vote for Bob! You have to keep your head on a swivel when you find yourself in a vicious... uh... doll fight. And putting a head on a swivel is just what the Portland Beavers are looking to do with their next promotion: making a bobblehead doll in the image of Bob L. Head. After a spring search nationwide for people named Bob L. Head, the Beavers have given the nod to three candidates. Shaking off the rest of the field appears to be, well, Bob L. Head from Maquoketa, Iowa, who is not only getting the most thorough campaign coverage, but he also has a daughter named Bob L. Head. Weird.
Remember, your vote counts, but I'm telling you right now there is just no way the winner won't get a big head.

Peyton Manning's Monkey Has Died The Indianapolis Colts proved they were mudders, winning Super Bowl XLI over the Chicago Bears in rain-drenched Miami 29-17. Peyton Manning brings Indy its first pro sports championship since the Pacers won three ABA titles ending in 1973.

Michael Vick Passes the Buck The Atlanta Falcons quarterback's 2006 season: 2,474 passing yards, 1,039 rushing yards, 20 touchdown passes, 2 touchdown runs, and one provocative comment after Sunday's season-ending loss: "I don't see how people can point the finger at me. I think I had a great season. ... I can't do it all by myself. I call myself Superman, but I really don't have the cape on my back."

Yankees Ink Pettitte To One-Year Deal One year, $16 Million, with an option for 2008. Could this mean Roger Clemens will be back in pinstripes too?

Hey nort... Does that mean EVERY athlete that retires, then comes back is a "backstabber" ? How many people has guys like George Foreman and Evander Holyfield and many others, stabbed ? If guys like Clemens still have the talent (and he did) I think that they should continue on, if that is something they desire.

Hey Bishop...You need to loosen your tight ass. We all make fun of something now and then. If you can't lighten up and laugh once in a while, you will pass from this earth with a frown on your face! Mike tyson has made a fortune, mostly at being bad at something. If I want to poke fun at him, I am going to. After all, I work for a living.

Kudos to rumple for the story. A poignant story about "real" men, not because they played football. These men put up with more pain than the average person will ever know, yet live with more dignity and humility than anyone could! What I don't understand is why can't Gene Upshaw be forced out of office? Surely someone could do something to undermine this self-loving person (notice that I didn't call him a man!). Why the NFL sticks with someone that is an embarrassment to the league is not comprehensible. My prayer is that these players get the help they need, and hope that the league realizes that they have a serious responsibility to these men!
