Sports Bio

Attended school in Chapel Hill for seven years. Was on Franklin Street when the Heels beat Michigan for the 1993 National Championship. I was there for the first Heels' loss in the Dean Dome: Len Bias let up the Heels and the Terps won in OT. At one point, Bias hit a three-pointer, then stole the inbounds pass and dunked it. He scored 5 points in about 2 seconds. He was awesome.

Was an original season ticket holder for the Carolina Panthers. Now I'm in Denver, watching the Rockies, Avs, Nuggets and Broncos.

This guy is big. But what does his status as one of the alphabet soup champions say about the heavyweight division?

AFI names its top 10 sports movies Two boxing movies "Raging Bull" followed by "Rocky" at the top. Also two baseball movies in top 5.

SPOILER ALERT: The AFI describes Rocky thusly: In late November, 1975, Rocky Balboa, a sweet, garrulous, slightly over-the-hill boxer, wins his latest match with more fury than talent.r... Uhh, he didn't win.

Most of the best athletes in the US don't play soccer. Can you imagine how good Kevin Garnett, Kobe Bryant, Allen Iverson, Dwyane Wade, Carmelo Anthony, LeBron James, Randy Moss, et al, could have been if they had played soccer as kids instead of basketball or football? I'm just sayin'. Heck, take those guys right NOW, let them train with a world class soccer coach for a year, and I bet they could compete for the World Cup.

US goalkeeper Hope Solo talks about World Cup fiasco Read story

Goaltenders ARE different. I can easily imagine Patrick Roy, in a similar situation, saying the same thing. Now, none of that makes any of it right, but I'll cut her more slack than I would a position player. I want my goalie to be an independent cocky bastard ("bitch" in this case?) Goalies are essentially playing an individual sport but just happen to be on a team. And I refuse to recognize the version where Greedo shot first. It's just ridiculous on so many levels.

Sox Will Face Rocks in World Series The Boston Red Sox beat the Cleveland Indians 11-2, completing a comeback from 3-1 to win the American League Championship Series. They'll face the Colorado Rockies Wednesday in the World Series for Game 1 in Fenway Park.

Boston fans, how big is playing in the NL for up to three games? Big Papi will be at first and Youkilis will be on the bench. That can't help the Sox.

Video Surfaces of Joey Porter-Levi Jones Fight Fox Sports has obtained video of the brawl between the Dolphins linebacker and Bengals tackle that took place at the The Palms casino in Las Vegas last March. The video shows, as Jones said at the time, that it was a group attack. Jones' agent tells the network, "Levi has retained a Las Vegas attorney right after the fight but we just recently obtained the tape. He is now weighing his legal options." See the video.

Yankees Broadcaster Suzyn Waldman Cries on the Air There's no crying in baseball? The Yankees radio broadcaster fought through tears during the postgame show after the series- and potentially era-ending loss. "This is rough," said Waldman, describing Manager Joe Torre's press conference. "I was OK actually 'til I went into the clubhouse -- and the coaches are sitting in Torre's office and they are watching this. The tears you hear in my voice are coming down the faces of the coaches." Hear the audio.

I know most people don't care about details like this, but if Torre is not back with the Yankees it will not be because he was fired. His contract is up. He is no longer employed by the Yankees. He is a free agent. Steinbrenner just has to decide if he wants to re-sign Torre to another deal or not. And, of course, Torre has to agree to terms.

Hope Solo Kicked Off Team for Consolation Game In response to Hope Solo's comments after the Brazil loss, Coach Greg Ryan said the benched goalkeeper won't play in Sunday's third-place World Cup game and won't even be on the bench, in spite of her apologies to the public and her teammates. "We have moved forward with 20 players who have stood by each other, who have battled for each other," said Ryan. "And when the hard times came -- and the Brazil game was a hard time -- they stood strong. Now it's the 20 who have stuck together who will be ready to go out and compete against Norway."

I just that if Hope ever has a son she names him "Han." That would be cool.

Personally, Bernie is one of my least favorite columnists around. He is the worst in Denver, and considering Woody Paige is a Denver columnist that says a lot. He used to be in Chicago, and it was apparently a big deal when the Rocky Mountain News hired him away.

Premier League team previews. The BBC (ok, ok, it's just Mark Lawrenson's poorly-written short thoughts) forecasts team prospects ahead of the 2007-08 kickoff this Saturday. Also see previews from Soccernet and the Guardian (poorly-organized but worth a read).

I learned more about the Premiereship than I've ever known after reading the little capsules on all the teams. One question: How do you pronounce the "Villa" in Aston Villa? Are the double LL's hard, like "hello" or more like Seve Ballesteros' last name?

The $72 Million figure is meaningless. The important number is the guaranteed $30 million. That's still a lot of cheese.

NFL folds Europe league, to focus on regular-season games abroad The NFL folded its development league in Europe after 16 years on Friday, calling the decision a sound business move that will allow for a stronger international focus on regular-season games outside the United States.

posted by STUNNER at 11:34 AM on June 29

The NFL Europa (and its predecessors) rose from the ashes of a stateside development league. It was the World League of American Football. Appropriately enough, it was the W-LAF. (That's W-laugh for the non-English as a first language crew, and I applaud you, because I do not have a second language.) I was in Chapel Hill, NC, when the Raleigh-Durham Skyhawks existed for an entire year before moving to Columbus and becoming the Ohio Glory. The Glory, of course, preceded the Columbus Bluejackets or being decorated like a team sponsored by the US Postal Service.
