MLB Resolutions What better way to set goals for 2007 than with New Year's resolutions for some of baseball's biggest and brightest. (Grum, there is even a shout out for you.)

More than just a 'roid freak... Sad turn of events for body building's star couple. Kelly Ryan was once a student of Bela Karolyi, before she met Craig Titus.

NCAA deems Chief Illiniwek Hostile Ridiculous. Shouldn't they use something like academic performance of the athletes to reward schools with post season events?

A dazzling Manny being Manny moment I saw this on ESPN this morning and burst out laughing as soon as I saw the high-five. There are few players who could get away with doing something like that.

Sorry, but Ankiel had a genuine "great catch" for the Cardinals last night against the Pirates.

Rickroll the Mets! In their final historic season at Shea your New York Mets are having a contest to select the song to be used all season during the 8th Inning Sing-A-Long. A Digg campaign is underway to write-in a certain song. voting ends noon on Monday April 7th, vote early, vote often!

I'm with Grum, anything that isn't the MLB mandated cookie cutter crap would be nice. (I cringe everytime that "day-O" stupidity comes over the PA.) I had never heard of rickrolling before this. I think its pretty funny.

The Buck Stops Here For the first time since 1960, there won't be a Buck in a Cardinals broadcast booth this year.

It will be good to see/ hear more of Rick Horton. He's got a great voice and excellent baseball knowledge. I would rather Hrabosky part ways with the Redbird booth-- he's a pompous buffoon.

Floyd Irons paid so they could play. An interesting article about one of the most successful big-school basketball coaches in Missouri state history. Note: For those not familiar with the region, the city of Alton (mentioned in the article), is in Illinois. Google map here.

I remember all of the community outrage when this guy was fired. I hope they are keeping up on all of the developments and are outraged that he never paid for their sons to play basketball. I love his angle-- I did it so they wouldn't be on the streets... so they could go to college. He forgot-- for a select few... for a limited time... as long as I am making money. STL public schools are in shambles and this guy makes 90K? Its no wonder STL public schools are a joke and are not capable of managing without state intervention.

Rolen for Glaus? Rolen has a simmering feud with manager Tony La Russa, one that has become increasingly public since La Russa agreed to a two-year deal to return to the Cardinals. Rolen has remained mum publicly, though La Russa has described an environment where one player said he would prefer La Russa not return to the club. That player: Rolen.

Bo should know that the Cardinals win if this pans out.

Journalist: The NFL's No Game for a Family Dick Meyer in today's Washington Post: "My son and I braved frigid, remote FedEx Field to see our beloved Chicago Bears, the fallen Super Bowl champions, humiliated 24-16 by the struggling Washington Redskins. It wasn't the depth of our despair that will keep us away from football stadiums for good but the depravity of the fans. I suppose depravity is a strong word. But what better describes drunken adult men, egged on by other grown beer-swillers, belly-shouting the most spectacular obscenities imaginable as they stand next to a 13-year-old boy? Every play was a competition to produce a more vile insult or a different suggestion about which Bear body part might be stuffed up which orifice. ... Within 10 minutes of kickoff, I knew I had made a terrible mistake taking my son to the game."

I refuse to go to any Cubs-Cardinals games at Busch Stadium anymore. Fist fights broke out at two of the games I attended and the ushers were so worthless they didn't even kick the guilty parties out of the stadium. The rivalry just attracts a special kind of stupid.

How Oprah ruined the marathon Has this country's marathoning spirit been trampled by hordes of joggers whose only goal is to stagger across the finish line?

posted by justgary at 04:23 AM on November 15

I volunteered at the finish line of a half-marathon last Sunday. One of the last finishers looked at the time clock at the finish line and said, "I made it in under 4 hours." It wasn't until he went to pull off the race number stub that I realized he had had a stroke that affected the right side of his body. Elites may be the marathon "spirit", but its guys like this who are the heart. I'll run along side, and be honored to get bogged down at a water stop with, guys like that any day.

Yanks' Shelley Duncan Crushes Poor Child's Hopes, Dreams, Future, Then Laughs And Sacrifices A Black Goat To The Dark Lords Okay, maybe it wasn't that bad.

posted by The_Black_Hand at 05:07 PM on September 18

If the autograph was so offensive why didn't the kid's mom just throw it away? Duncan is in a no win situation... he just signs his name, the kid takes it to school and makes fun of it ala Chico... signing "Dear Little 10 year old, hope we can still be friends despite your love of the Red Sox" is too ridiculous to imagine... "Dear kid, please let your parents be your role models" is obviously a bad idea as his mother has demonstrated that it may not be her strong suit. Can't blame Duncan if he never wants to sign another autograph. I think its ridiculous some media person (no journalist here) gave this woman her 15 minutes of fame.

Death Race 2007 Unnecessary is the entire point of the Tough Guy competition, a semi-annual 8-mile race through mud, manure, water, fire, more mud, barbed wire, nets, electrical charges, still more mud, smoke grenades, sewer pipes, ice, even more mud, ropes, cables, tires, on a horse farm in England's West Midlands. Make sure to check out the vid at the top of the page.

This sounds like fun. Anyone aware of anything similar (besides the Camp Pendleton Mud Run) in the States? SG: It can't be exactly like the Corps. Unless they have changed some standards and let you do the stuff in your underwear... carrying an inflatable alligator.

Cards win the NL Pennant.

posted by Joey Michaels at 03:31 PM on October 21

Holden, I'll be in 367-- just look for the Underdog poster, which actually did get shown on Fox during NLCS game 5. Let me know if you need a seat warmer down there in the money rows. Back on subject-- Harry Carey didn't suck, but he couldn't hold a candle to Jack Buck. I wish Bob Costas would loose his mind/sell-out/ignore his morales and return to TV commentary for MLB. He won't, which is why he is my choice for the best modern day baseball commentator. Which I guess I can't call him, since he doesn't do it anymore.

Cards win the NL Pennant.

posted by Joey Michaels at 03:31 PM on October 20

Holden, what section? I should be at at least one of the three (I predict Cards in six). Regardless of who wins, I just hope the games are rivoting enough to keep me from going insane listening to useless Fox announcer drivel. I should just mute it and play the radio broadcast, but its always a pitch behind. Being from the STL, its hard to admit that Joe Buck is a sell out.

UT tells woman she cheers too much Tennessee fan Victoria Caldwell said she was speechless after receiving a call from the UT Athletic Department on Thursday. Fans seated near her in Neyland Stadium would have a hard time believing that. Caldwell, a first-time season ticket holder, said UT's Bill Higdon called her at home and said other fans had complained about her. Their complaint? She cheers too much.

In my experience, people who "cheer" like this chick are less knowledgeable about the sport they are spectating and therefore have to alleviate their boredom/lack of understanding by being a disrespectful idiot. I'm all for doing whatever it takes to encourage fans to be fun and respectful, but then I can barely tolerate booing, so I may not be the best barometer.

The girl's got game

This chick rocks. By the looks of her picture, I think the 300 lbs is an exaggeration for intimidation. Kind of like the extra inches college ball players grow around the time the team program book comes out.

Is Mac deserving? Some thoughts regarding Mac's potential inclusion in the HOF.

posted by ballen7065 at 08:22 AM on July 24

CB: He was there for the final regular season weekend, even pulled down #3 on the countdown clock in right field. There were a few boos from the typical beer drinking bench warmers, but all he (and his kids) would have heard was cheering. (Once a Cardinal, always a Cardinal. We'll still cheer for you even if you leave us to go play for the AL team that whooped us in the Series.) He did fess up to taking andro when the media questioned him, I'm not sure if he really could have done much good for the game by full disclosure in a congressional witch hunt. The players have got to police themselves and keep "trainers" (groupies) who lack the raw talent to be a big leager but still want to be part of baseball greatness out of the locker rooms. As for HOF voting, its gotta be based on player production relative to the era they played. Otherwise you would have to include the years that Mantle led the league in "the clap" as part of his profile.
