Keane leaves Man U "Roy Keane has dramatically and unexpectedly left Manchester United by 'mutual consent' after more than 12 years at the club." While this move comes on the heels of controversial statements made by Keane about the club and teammates to MUTV (the club's TV channel), it nevertheless is massive shock to football fans pretty much everywhere. And it brings up lots of questions, the most interesting of which probably where he'll end up. Celtic, maybe?

Jim Bunning wants changes to the Veterans Committee: he seems to think that they need to elect someone every year, whether they feel there are worthy candidates available or not.

Inter Milan cancel England tour due to safety concerns Wow. Needless to say, people aren't happy, and the old chestnut about "giving in to the terrorists" is already bouncing around. Is this just good, safe policy or total overreaction?

According to Slate, men don't wear jock straps any more And football players don't wear cups! Good lord, people-- is this true? What about the flopping, and the helmet impacts, and the things I can't even imagine? What are you thinking?

Oh wait, never mind.

If I didn't have a player who was such a strong leader that he could handle Artest, there's no way in hell I'd take the chance. I honestly don't know who could be that guy - it seems like Shaq gets the necessary respect but Miami doesn't need or want Artest. The Knicks need him but have no leadership whatsoever and have enough trouble on their hands with Stephon. And he's not even crazy.

World Cup Draw Now! Let's discuss and predict.

Not just Czech Republic - Italy as well. I'd say the USA's chances of even getting out the group are almost nil.

No UEFA Cup for ManU! For the first time in 11 years, Manchester United failed to move past the group stages of the Champions League. Finishing bottom in Group D also means the Reds won't compete for the UEFA Cup either. Are Sir Alex Ferguson's days at Old Trafford numbered?

All I can say is YAY. Bad days for Man U are good days for the rest of us. I love that they finished bottom, though it must be said that Fergie was disappointingly classy in defeat, refusing to throw blame around or talk down to the press.

All the way, the "Bobby way" Valentine takes the Chiba Lotte Marines to the Japan Series title (and the hearts and boardrooms of Japan).

I despise Keane - particularly in his violent, dirty moments - but I respect the hell out of him as a footballer. He's about a far from "crap" as a man can get. And Here's a brief roundup of some of the "how it happened" rumors - nothing conclusive, of course.

Russian Billionaire Abramovich Starts Probe into Chelsea’s Defeats Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich shas ent a delegation to the club’s Surrey training ground to find out what has gone wrong, despite losing just three times all season, daily newspapers reported Thursday.

Awesome. This story is a perfect example of what is so great about football AND Russians - conspiracies galore! That said, "everyone at the ground" could mean a couple of hurt players and a few backroom staff, if it was a day off. And the quotes from Mourinho in the story are from right after the Man U game - I wonder if he actually had anything to say about the "investigation," or even knew it was happening.

There's no crying in baseball...football, now that's another story. Nick Saban makes a rookie cry on the first day of camp. Ricky's so scared he's digging his six-foot-kickstart-moto-bong out of storage.

This story killed me. I know it's a very girly response, but I felt horrible for him. What's worse than crying on your first day of practice? Oh wait, I know-- having news of that crying hit the wires! Sweet.

So, after all the gnashing of teeth, accusation of capitulation and threatened lawsuits, it's back on. Just a little misunderstanding there, England. Bygones.

The weird thing to me about all this is how incredibly vague Inter's statement is (it's link in the original article)-- you can even interpret it to mean that they simply think that something as frivolous as football should be made important right now. What I thought of right away, though, is how high concerned Italy is about terror at home (esp in relation to their presence in Iraq) right now-- right after the London attacks, they passed a law giving police more power, and there's been a lot of talk in government about Italy being the next target. I really wonder whether someone (Berlusconi?) went to Inter and asked them to just lay low and stay away from England for a bit, if only to avoid drawing further connection to a (perceived) alliance.

Update: at least one (Leicester) of the clubs Inter were due to play is planning to sue. Everything else aside, four smaller clubs are losing a fairly significant (to them, at least) pile of money over the pullout.

Wow. I can't imagine having unprotected tackle sticking out there with lax balls and the like flying around-- I had no idea there was such a fine line between sacrificing for performance and tragic emasculation. Being a man sounds like sort of a bummer.
