First documented US MMA death. Samuel Vasquez, a 35-year-old mixed martial artist from Houston, Texas, died on Friday.

The UFC was running in commission states and rules were both in place and enforced before Zuffa bought the company. Dana White has done a lot to popularize the sport, but he can't take credit for either creating or enforcing the rules. Dave Meltzer has done the best reporting on this issue but unfortunately most of his work isn't on the web. I agree completely on the comparison to boxing.

That's because before Dana White took over the UFC, it was pretty much 'Survival of the Fitess' since people would eye-gouge, bite & throw low blows. This is simply not true. The first UFC run by Zuffa and Dana White was UFC 30 and most of the rules used today were in place by then including weight classes, mandatory use of gloves, and limits on what areas that could be targeted for strikes. Even UFC 1 had rules against eye gouging and biting. There is a pretty good overview here

A Mixed Martial Arts Super Bowl? UFC buys Japan's Pride Fighting Championship, promises "Super Bowl" of MMA ass-kicking.

I'm not sure it's good news for everyone. For the fighters, there's fewer promoters and that's going to impact the payoffs. That said, I'm looking forward to seeing some great fights.

Germany v Korea is semifinal 1. Who cares? ;-)

I've got Germany in the office pool, so that's who I'm rooting for. If I didn't have money riding on this, I'd be pulling for Turkey.

Tyson fit as a butchers dog, apparently. If it's true we could be in for an absolute classic on Saturday night. Despite serious ethical misgivings about boxing I might be tempted to shell out for ppv for the first time. There are a couple of good, if irritatingly written articles at the HBO site. Lewis seems calmness itself and claims he is seeking only for respect and dignity. Talking of which, this article is old but good, and puts things in a little perspective.

I know that Tyson is washed up and that Lewis is likely to win early ... but I'm still tempted to get the PPV. I get sucked in by the spectacle of the whole thing.
