Five men detained, questioned for praying at NY Giants game
The men were questioned and then were not allowed to return to their seats, but were instead assigned to seats in another section. Three guards stood near them, and escorted them to their cars when they left the stadium. Was it warranted? The men are Muslim.

Pinella to kick hat from booth in '06? Lou Pinella's ongoing stint in the broadcast booth during the ALCS is being called a success. Many have expected the former Devil Rays manager to catch on with another team, but he has yet to make plans for next season. Asked if he would make the move upstairs, Lou responded, "It's not for sure -- nothing's for sure. I like it. I'm enjoying this."

Saints skip town. With Hurricane Katrina bearing down, players were given time to help their families evacuate on Sunday. Then, the New Orleans Saints took the last chartered flight out of town. From California, where they are borrowing the San Jose State Spartans' field, they watched their own stadium's roof sustain significant damage while some ten thousand people sought refuge inside. Three deaths have been reported from within the Louisiana Superdome, the last of which a probable suicide. It is unclear yet if the stadium will be ready for the home opener against the Giants on September 18. Let's hope the Saints and other sports teams will host fundraisers to help the area during its long road to recovery.

Pedal foo With the Tour comes two little suggestions: a cycling category for SpoFi posts, and a spoked wheel SpoFi logo to shuffle with the balled logos.

Five Reasons to Watch the World Series So it's not Manny being Manny and shots of Ben Affleck sitting in the stands. It is still going to be a great series for all the right reasons.

The Epic of Craig Biggio You ever go to a movie, it' s pretty good for about an hour and a half but then the story is over but it's like the director can't find the ending so it goes on for another half-hour looking for some way to tie things together? That's kind of Biggio's career; it was over, and then it went on for quite awhile.

The first major league game I ever attended happened to be Biggio's 15th as a pro, so I've always liked him for that silly reason. It's amazing that he was able to play with oldies like Terry Puhl, Bill Doran, and Buddy Bell (whose son, he outlasted), and fresh faces like Hunter Pence.

ESPN's Dana Jacobson learns the Internet is always listening I didn't even learn about this until Jacobson apologized on her show Monday morning, but the question remains: Was one week away from the job that ESPN gave Dana enough of a consequence? Swilling vodka straight from the bottle at the podium and cursing Jesus?

If he'd have said, "Fuck _____'s," refering inappropriately to any race, this entire thread would have had to be shut down... I'd be offended at the hypothetical person's misuse of the apostrophe, that's for sure. I don't really get what disrespecting a historical individual has to do with disrespecting an entire ethnic group. As for Tiger Woods being more respected than Jesus (this is getting pretty ridiculous), I would just say that Tiger's PR people must know better than to do all sorts of heinous things in his name.

Goose cooks up HOF induction, but Rice is not on the menu this year.

Mattingly was great for a short period of time. He didn't have a really good season after 1989. Considering that he wasn't a full-timer until 1984, that's just not a long enough streak of dominance for the HoF.
Vick Sentenced to 23 Months in Prison Six months after news first broke of an alleged dogfighting ring at his house in Virginia, Michael Vick was sentenced to federal prison Monday for his role in a dogfighting conspiracy that involved gambling and killing pit bulls. The earliest he could get released is May 2009. On the field, Falcons Coach Bobby Petrino's desperate search for a replacement now turns to Chris Redman.

this country doesn't care about human beings much less animals ... sink or swim ... you're on your own ... What's your point? The dogs that Vick killed "sank" and it sucked to be them? Thanks for the insight. p.s. ... hampton, VA is rough ... Dog fighting isn't problem #1. Granted, but irrelevant. This was federal case, meaning little to no Hampton, VA resources were used in the prosecution (and besides, Vick grew up in nearby Newport News, and the house was in Smithfield). Hampton Roads, like so many American cities, has deep rooted crime problems. No doubt, it has bigger issues than Michael Vick. But none of that has anything to do with the fact that Michael Vick ran a dog fighting ring, which a great many people consider a pretty inhumane business, and that he did so in a place with laws that forbid such things. Sucks to be him.

This Just In: 'Alex Rodriguez is a Weasel' "Since forever, baseball has had one mandate for every team: No significant news announcements during the World Series," Scott Miller writes for CBS Sports. "Opting out in the middle of a World Series game is the height of arrogance. It is the Towering Inferno of arrogance. Arrogance doesn't reach higher peaks."

If the series had been more exciting, I imagine FOX would have held off on the announcement. Can't imagine that at all. I'm just surprised that FOX managed to fit the A-Rod announcement in between its exhaustive coverage of a fast food promotion and reminding us about a car company's love affair with the game.

A-Rod Opts Out of Contract He has taken off th pinstripes. I think he did this now to divorce himself from the managerial decision coming tomorrow. I also think that he knows something about Posada, Rivera, and Pettitte that others don't. Where's he going: nobody knows.

Indians Pitcher Byrd Ordered 1,000 Vials of Human Growth Hormone From 2002 to 2005, Cleveland Indians starter Paul Byrd dropped $25,000 on human growth hormone and syringes from a Florida anti-aging clinic, Lance Williams and Mark Fainaru-Wada report in today's San Francisco Chronicle. He made his last order one week before Major League Baseball formally banned the drug on Jan. 13, 2005. An article in Slate from March explains why athletes take HGH, which doesn't have the severe side effects or muscle-mass enhancing traits of steroids.

jg - It's in the original SF Chronicle article too.
Two of Byrd's prescriptions for growth hormones were not written by a physician, according to a law enforcement source. Instead, the prescriptions were written by a Florida dentist, said the source, who asked not to be quoted by name because he was not authorized to comment. The dentist's license was suspended in 2003 for fraud and incompetence, state records show.
I can't even put into words how much we want this, beaverboard. Have a look on YouTube or Flickr for how happy this city was when we won the NL last week.
