Sheffield United back to EPL? Relegated Sheffield United have an arbitration hearing overturn the EPL's decision to fine rather than dock West Ham points for illegally fielding players that were not "owned" by the club. Sheffield claim they will be returned to the EPL next season if they win the arbitration. The fallout may be West Ham taking Sheffield's place in the First Division or (horrors!) 21 teams in the EPL next season. In a related proceeding, actor Sean Bean (of Lord of the Rings and Bond "GoldenEye" movies fame) will lead a Sheffield United delegation to Parliament to press the point. This is turning into a real spectacle.

Yashin Laughin' all the way to the bank The four years left on the deal are worth $26.45 million, according to Newsday. Under the NHL collective bargaining agreement, the Islanders can buy Yashin out by paying two-thirds of the remaining amount ($17.63 million) over the next eight years. The salary-cap hit will be some $2.2 million per season over that time.

Asante to Pats: See you midseason New England Patriots cornerback Asante Samuel, miffed about being given the franchise tag, is skipping the Pats' first mandatory minicamp. He also says he'll skip the preseason and the first half of the regular season if New England doesn't sweeten its offer. Where do your sympathies lie, and is the franchise tag fair? And tack on any other interesting minicamp news, like this tidbit about the Houston Texans allowing running back Samkon Gado to miss some offseason workouts to study for the MCAT. Gado plans to become a doctor when his football career ends.
