Cheerleader death renews calls for increased safety steps. "Figures show 50 percent of injuries to young women in high school athletics are from cheerleading," [state Rep. Peter J. Koutoujian, chairman of the Public Health Oversight Committee] said. "These girls don’t wear pads, and they’re pushing the boundaries at every turn. While the boys' sports, contact sports, get all the attention, there's a great deal of injuries these young women endure."

Fukudome doesn't find racist T-shirts in Wrigleyville funny A Fukudome T-shirt with a racist image is the hottest-selling item at a souvenir stand that sells unlicensed Cubs-related merchandise across Addison Street from the ballpark.......... The Cubs front office was flooded with angry emails from fans in response to a Sun-Times story about a controversial T-shirt being sold outside of Wrigley Field. The ballclub does the right thing (update inside) after the uproar, for those of you who feel we've licked the problem of Racism in America, Guess Again!

Indiana set to hire Crean as hoops coach Indiana University will hire Marquette's Tom Crean as its basketball coach and is expected to introduce him at a news conference Wednesday. The hiring comes near the end of a tumultuous six-week period in which former Hoosiers coach Kelvin Sampson resigned amid an NCAA scandal, interim coach Dan Dakich replaced him and then lost four of seven games. Is Indiana on the road to recovery?

Sampson Reportedly Out at Indiana An official announcement is expected from the school tomorrow. Fox Sports is calling it a firing, while WTHR-TV in Indianapolis says it could be a buyout. Assistant Coach Dan Dakich, who started the season in an administrative position, but was pressed into service following the resignation of former Assistant Coach Rob Senderoff after allegations of improper phone calls to recruits, is likely to finish the season as Head Coach.

Harry Caray's Been Gone For 10 Years It's been ten years since Harry passed away. A Hall member and one of the all time great baseball announcers, Harry made every game exciting. He worked for the St Louis Cardinals, Chicago White Sox, and Chicago Cubs where he is still beloved by all. Whether the game was 1-0 or 15-2, you just had to keep listening. He wasn't a cookie cutter announcer like is so prevalent today. I loved him and miss him. This Bud's for you Harry. God Bless You.

Jim Brown calls out Tiger Woods I thought that Tiger handled this very well. Apparently Jim Brown thinks Tiger should have called in Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson.

But Will It Be a Good Use of a Timeout when ESPN has to sit Greg Easterbrook down again? Easterbrook was all over the Pats' camera scandal. Unlike the rest of mainstream sports media, he's still on about it, even accusing the NFL of covering up Superbowl cheating, all of which earned him a decent rebuke from ESPN's ombudsman. That didn't stop him from using this week's column to make an interesting comparison between the Pats and Colts before their Week 9 matchup. Even the less-than-serious quarters of Internet sports are taking notice.
