Federer Beats Gonzalez, Wins Aussie Open Take a look at these numbers: 3 Grand Slams in a row, 36 matches in a row, and the first player to win a Grand Slam without losing a set since 1980. Oh yeah, he's 25 and only 4 Grand Slam titles behind Sampras's 14. Greatest. Player. Ever.

After getting spanked by Federer, Roddick lights up the post-game news conference But the only thing that can help Roddick save face is if the red-hot Gonzalez goes down in straight sets as well.

i think the guy makes a pretty good argument. i would think most people agree with him, unless you're a hardcore tennis fan and have tivo capabilities. Weedy McSmokey...nice one.

Davids to bank it like Beckham? Edgar Davids, 33-year-old Spurs midfielder (formerly of Inter Milan and Holland) with the cool sports glasses, is reportedly in talks with FC Dallas. I wonder which other aging stars will be next to join Becks on the MLS Old-Timers Gravy Express? (C'mon, Zizou!)

No one seems to remember when Pele came over to the US in 1975, which led to a vicious cycle of signing aging superstars and eventually resulted in the demise of the NASL in 1984. Of course Beckham is past his prime and in a couple years, people will be blowing by him left and right, but that is not the issue here. The MLS is a young league and should first concentrate on developing young homegrown talent before succumbing to the quick fix of aging Europeans. The future of the MLS depends on it, and if this Beckham signing sparks a trend, the MLS will become about as popular as curling before 2015.

Colts advance, thanks to... their D? A defense that hasn't held anyone below 100 on the year holds one of the best backs in the league to 32 yards on 13 carries, and the whole team to 151.

Eagles boot Giants, while Patriots take Jets.

when I saw that long snap go high, i almost creamed my pants and thought about how karma was coming back to kiss me after the Giants long snapper botched the game against the Niners a few years back. but... detmer nailed that hold and put it down perfectly, laces out and everything. Finkel and Einhorn would have been proud. Giants didn't deserve to win that game, but I wouldn't get too pumped if I was an Eagles fan. The fact that they only beat the Giants by 3 is pretty sad. And even if they do make the bowl, the Pats, Ravens, Colts, Chargers (take your pick) will destroy them. So, Philly, be prepared for some dissapointment of your own.

Cowher resigns, Steelers begin coach search The link says it all.

posted by usroute17 at 03:26 PM on January 05

If he was really that serious about his family he would have "retired" at the top of the game last year, with nothing left to prove. But watching him walk away when the going got tough makes me associate Cowher with something I never thought I would.... Pussy.

Ready for a shocker? In a stunning development that nobody saw coming, San Diego's Ladainian Tomlinson runs away with the NFL MVP, receiving 44 of 50 votes. Also, Miami's Jason Taylor takes home the Defensive Player of the Year Award, and Chad Pennington of the New York Jets is your Comeback Player of the Year. Congrats!

How come Eli Manning got no consideration? He got the giants into the playoffs for gods sakes!!

Australia complete their 5-0 Ashes whitewash, described over-by-over: "Any Australians out there I pity you, because you will never experience the true euphoria of one who has hit rock bottom discovering that bottom is merely a door to another purer world. I am zen. I am cricket. I am the ball. I am love." A perfect description of how most England fans feel after seeing the Aussies take revenge for 2005 in ruthless, comprehensive fashion.

combined with their poor showing at the world cup and this embarrassment at the Ashes, its been a pretty crappy year for the english. but hey, atleast a 14 year old kid sailed across the Atlantic.

A Man’s Place at a Woman’s Practice Faces Limits The idea is that the men are bigger, stronger and faster than the women and can provide more rigorous opposition. But if the N.C.A.A.’s committee on women’s athletics has its way, the use of men in practices will soon end.

The only women who are catching up with men are the one's who fail gender tests like that Indian runner did a few weeks ago.

The Hoser's NFL Picks, Postseason Week One NFL picks that fully expect a Boise State University jersey from some ardent admirer.

posted by justgary at 06:16 PM on January 04

forget all that stuff about no wagering money according to The Hoser's picks. The Hoser is dead on about the Giants. I'm placing $1,000 (my salary for 2 weeks, btw) on the Giants to cover those 6.5 points and $200 to win outright. Giants have been bitten hard by the injury bug (Shockey, Toomer, Strahan) but Tiki is bringing it all together and carrying this team on his shoulders. I smell a cinderella story...

Broncos' Darrent Williams Is Shot Dead Denver Broncos cornerback Darrent Williams was shot and killed in a drive-by shooting in downtown Denver early Monday morning

posted by texasred at 07:47 AM on January 01

"Hours before the shooting, the Broncos lost to San Francisco 26-23 in overtime, eliminating them from the playoff race." Ouch. My thoughts go out to his family. 24 is too young to go.

Goat's Head Soup Christmas-wrapped and placed under the tree, GM in Italy's Serie A gets the message.

better than finding a horse's head in bed ala The Godfather... But honestly, what is he doing putting a goat's head under the tree? My wife would have threatened castration and withheld fornication.

Yao will miss at least 6 weeks

posted by Barry-from-H-town at 12:04 AM on December 31

i got to agree with sportingo here. superstar players of today, currently in the middle of their primes, are missing loads of games. jordan's foot injury was really the only bad injury of his career and happened in '85. Bird was already slowing down by the time his back problems began, definitely no longer in his prime. And Magic's condition really doesnt apply here. And look at who is making frequent trips to the IR - many young guys in their primes (like Wade, Amare, Yao, TMac, etc.) Its really quite alarming.

Rose Bowl wilts while title hopes push up daisies. Once upon a time the Rose Bowl was the goal. This year it's a classic match-up of Michigan against USC, but the game seems "like a consolation prize," writes Art Spander.

Really? I saw USC vs. Texas last year, and that game had a whole lot of Aura. Long live the BCS.

TV shows with boxing in them. While trying to corroborate that the late great Godfather of Soul James Brown was an amateur boxer, I happened upon this page that lists TV shows and episodes that were boxing-related. Savor the sweet sport.
