You Can't Stop Deadspin; You Can Only Hope to Contain It PRWeek profiles Deadspin.Com "dorky and corn-fed" editor Will Leitch, whose influential, sarcastic and ESPN-mocking sports blog is fast becoming the New York Yankees to SportsFilter's Detroit Tigers.

I wonder if Deadspin writers consider taking your kids to church to be on par with Nazi indoctrination, like SportsFilter's Frazer? Maybe I'd like it better over there. Thanks for the heads up.

Sticking it to Sidney It's tough to take Montreal's complaints about Sid the Kid's diving seriously when lunkhead Aaron Downey's delivering the message. By sportsfilter's own wfrazerjr.

I think the Pens should go out and get a thug, just as protection. I know it means they have to free up a roster spot, but they have other young stars besides Crosby and other teams need to know there will be a price to pay if they want to take the low road. I agree with the others, nice column Frazer.

Peyton Manning's Monkey Has Died The Indianapolis Colts proved they were mudders, winning Super Bowl XLI over the Chicago Bears in rain-drenched Miami 29-17. Peyton Manning brings Indy its first pro sports championship since the Pacers won three ABA titles ending in 1973.

I don't think they look at the entire playoff run when choosing the Super Bowl MVP (7 INTs). If they do, though, he deserved it for the second half of the Patriots game alone. As for the Bears defense, yes they were on the field entirely too long, but why were the safeties practically playing prevent the entire game. They gave the Colts the middle of the field, as evidenced by the performance of the RBs. If it was out of respect of Manning's arm, then he deserves the MVP for that reason as well.

Buffalo Bills: Africa's Four-Time Super Bowl Champs Now that every sports champion dons special T-shirts and ballcaps after the game, ever wonder what happens to the swag produced for the losers? The NFL ships it to developing nations in Africa and elsewhere. (Note: One Super Bowl team is jinxed by the article's photo.)

Alright, some kid in Africa has a Carolina Panthers Super Bowl Champion t-shirt on his back! I feel so much better now.

Brett Favre Coming Back For 17th Season "We have a good nucleus of young players. We were 8-8 last year, and that's encouraging."

posted by wingnut4life at 04:10 PM on February 04

I'm a Panthers fan, so I'm used to watching a quarterback throw off his back foot into double coverage, but unlike my quarterback, Favre was once a great deal better. I know it's hard for these great athletes to hang them up, but when it's time, it's time.

NFL Hall of Fame class of 2007 includes Michael Irvin, Thurman Thomas ... alongside Gene Hickerson, Bruce Matthews, Charlie Sanders and Roger Wehrli.

I would have liked to see Art Monk in there. I agree with wingnut on Irvin. The place for an ethics lesson isn't on the Hall of Fame vote.

Giants hopes fans and team will Bonds together. Dear fans...............

I've never hoped for a player on any team to suffer an injury, especially a career ending one. Here's hoping one or both of Bonds' gimpy knees finally blow short of 756.

Ted Johnson's on the Injured List Years After Retirement The former Patriots middle linebacker says Coach Bill Belichick and team trainers caused the debilitating mental problems he has developed after a series of increasingly severe concussions. "There’s something wrong with me," Johnson, 34, told the New York Times. "There’s something wrong with my brain. And I know when it started."

posted by rcade at 08:34 AM on February 02

I can only feel sorry for Ted Johnson. I don't blaim Belichick or the trainers, though. If a man knows he's hurt, it's his choice whether he goes back in. Yes, the coach can get pissed, even threaten him with his job, but he can't make him play. That being said, I really feel for Johnson and the quality of the remainder of his life. I really like the idea of the partially guaranteed contracts.

NFL Won't Let Church Show Game - The NFL has nixed a church's plans to use a wall projector to show the Colts-Bears Super Bowl game, saying it would violate copyright laws.

wfrazerjr, damn, I thought I was bitter toward organized religion. You make me look like a deacon. What would you have parents of small children do on Sunday mornings when they wish to attend church. Find a babysitter early on a Sunday morning so that the kids aren't getting brainwashed? Ever think they take the kids because the church provides free daycare while they worship? Ever think that maybe when the child becomes old enough the parents will respect his/her choice about whether or not to attend church? Careful, your personal issues are showing.

Rewritting Ali's history Better late than never: Is the legend surrounding Muhammad Ali being wilfully distorted by the Establishment?

In the eyes of a new generation, he is a Gandhi-esque caricature: non-controversial, utterly non-threatening and devoid of the contradictions that symbolised the deep divisions in postwar American consciousness.

ACC admits to 'timing error' in final seconds in Duke win over Clemson. Using the video supplied by ESPN on the page, it is clear that the winning basket would not have been made in time, and the game should have gone into overtime. Everyone always complains how the referees 'play favorites' for Duke...this is an example.

As I recall, UNC under Dean Smith got more than their fair share of calls. The same controversy that follows Coach K used to follow Smith. Just like in the NBA, the big names get the calls. It's unfortunate but the way it is.

Champions League on ice? Well, it may not be quite as illustrious as the futbol version, but International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) president Rene Fasel proposes a club championship game between the Stanley Cup winner and the European Champions Cup winner. Should the game get played, I'm guessing that the trustees will deny any challenge for the Cup. [via MrFrisby in the spofi campfire]

True. Every NHL team has Europeans on it. It wouldn't be unlikely for that "who do I play for" situation to come about. Then, if the NHL team loses a guy, it's not the same team that won the cup.

Long-shot Serena Williams annihilates #1 Maria Sharapova to win Australian Open. She started as a 34-1 longshot to win this event, coincidentally the last title she won on Tour (AO '05). Out of shape and will less than five events in the last 12 months, no one expected Serena Williams to compete for this Slam -- much less beat the newly-minted World #1 and US Open queen Maria Sharapova in straight sets. Does this win merely continue the tradition of "wacky" wins, or does it say something about the state of women's tennis today?

posted by somethingotherthan at 12:23 AM on January 27

I agree with Black Hand. She even gave the tennis world a much needed shot in the arm with a little smack talk the other day when she said when she's playing her best, there's no one on the women's tour who can beat her. She obviously speaks the truth.

Actually, the more ironic thing is that after winning, the Duke players tackled one another and rolled around on the floor just like Virginia Tech did when they beat Duke. That was when Coach K told some of the Tech players they were too classy and intelligent to behave in that manner. And despite my sign in name, I'm not a fan of any ACC school. I went to UNC Charlotte (undefeated in football yet again in 2006).
