"The chief executive officer of Tribune Company says he won't hesitate to sell the naming rights to Wrigley Field -- even if baseball purists don't like the idea. Zell has a suggestion for the makers of DoubleMint and Juicy Fruit.

'Perhaps the Wrigley Company will decide after getting it for free for so long that's time to pay for it,' he said."

The Cubs have not won a World Series since they have moved into Wrigley Field - I would think Cub fans would do anything to see a World Series winner. But no, they would rather die than give up the name of the owner that provided them with nothing but a sunburn!

Pedro Martinez, Juan Marichal filmed at cock fight A video of Martinez and Marichal at a cockfight was posted this week on YouTube and it showed the two laughing before releasing the roosters. They took part as honourary "soltadores," the word used to describe the person who puts the animal to fight. The fight takes place in their home country, the Dominican Republic, where cockfighting is legal and popular. It is banned throughout the United States

I think its great that Pedro has taken up a new recreation! Maybe this will relieve the urge that he has to beat up senior citizens.

Leitch: Why Mark Cuban Won't Get the Cubs "The guy has no chance. ... Mark Cuban will never own the Cubs, no matter how much money he waves in front of the Tribune Corp." -- Deadspin's Will Leitch

Good point whodat! Let Cuban buy the Cubs. First thing he can do is trade for Alex Rodriguez and assure the Cubs of never getting into another World Series.

Baseball GMs Vote in Favor of Instant Replay. In a move sure to make at least one former SportsFilter member roll over in his grave/production booth, baseball GMs have voted to propose that MLB adopt instant replay for disputed home run calls.

Since only the American League has the designated hitter rule, lets give instant replay only to the National League. In the World Series we can only use it in the National League park.

A-Rod a Mud Hen? Alex Rodriguez was offered a lucrative minor league contract from the Toledo Mud Hens. Of course it came from one of George Steinbrenner's sons. Will this be the only offer he gets considering he is asking for a $350 million contrat just to begin negotiations?

I remember, the A-Rod express is just like the song, "we're on the road to no where".

Where does the A-Rod express go?

I hope the Mud Hens were aware of A-Rods performance in playoff games! I hate to see anyone not get what they pay for.

A-Rod Opts Out of Contract He has taken off th pinstripes. I think he did this now to divorce himself from the managerial decision coming tomorrow. I also think that he knows something about Posada, Rivera, and Pettitte that others don't. Where's he going: nobody knows.

A-Rod would be a perfect fit for the Cubs, their used to losing in the playoffs!

Manny Ramirez, as Himself All right, then, be it resolved: Manny Ramirez knows more about baseball than you do.

Interesting article, its reference to "they probably should know better than to worship the forms of the game, instead of its soul". Is that a reference to the Colorado Rockies and their quest to bring religion into the game?

Rockies Place Their Faith in God, and One Another. Players on the Colorado Rockies, once described as an organization that adhered to a "Christian-based code of conduct," say that faith is not a requirement for peer approval.

Religion doesn't help you hit a 98 mph fastball! Excuse the expression, My God, they play on a field named after a can of beer. Let's play some baseball!

I think he might hit 70 + home runs. Of course that wouldn't include any home runs he might hit in the playoffs/world series. But then again how many could he have batting his usual .150 when it really counts!

Veterans Committee picks no one for Hall NEW YORK - No one was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee. Ron Santo, Jim Kaat and all the other candidates were left out Tuesday when the Veterans Committee admitted no new members for the third straight election.

posted by irunfromclones at 03:49 PM on February 27

I think the Hall of Fame gets it pretty much right. It is an exclusive club and should remain so. They shouldn't have to vote anyone in that doesn't meet a high standard! Even though it seems to work, I don't even agree with the Veterans Committee being necessary - if your eligibility is up, that should be it.

Just think of the possibilities, in 1968 Pedro could go out and pick a fight with a much younger Don Zimmer!
