Sports Illustrated's writers on the Best Games They've Ever Seen. Linked via Metafilter

What?! No mention of the epic Phins - Chargers playoff tilt in '82? Good thing I don't take Sports Illustrated very seriously anymore, or I'd be pissed Maybe none of the writers were there in person.

Ooh, NHL team salaries. So, you're a Leaf fan and you're looking for some new ammo to throw at your Sens-loving country cousin? Show 'em how screwed they're gonna be next summer when Heatley, Redden (UFAs) and Spezza (RFA) will all be free agents then. Or you just want to take a quick look at where every team is in regards to the cap? This is the site to use then.

If next year the NHL doesn't generate as much revenue as it did this year will the salary cap go down?

Is ESPN Killing the National Hockey League by Influencing Public Attitudes? By creating and reinforcing an expectation of failure regarding the NHL, ESPN is shaping public perception and contributing to the “death” of the NHL in the United States.

In any sport you have to stay loyal to your core fan base.Because of greed many sports expand too fast or into the wrong areas. The season is too long overlapping basketball and baseball. The playoffs are the start of the real season, too many teams get in.The season goes too far beyond what origanly was a winter sport. The players themselves are not that marketable except a few Can the above statement also refer to the NBA?

Centre of attention Rangers ink Drury and Gomez to lengthy deals. In other news on the first day of NHL free agency: The Leafs sign Jason Blake to a five year deal, Mathieu Schneider signs with the Ducks, putting Niedermayer's NHL future into question and the Flyers sign Daniel Briere to an 8 year contract. More inside...

The Midnight Massacre 30 years ago this week, Tom Seaver and the Mets went through an Amazin' Divorce.

posted by yerfatma at 01:18 PM on June 18

As for the Mets, the "Midnight Massacre" plunged them into their darkest era. They would finish last in 1977 and would lose 95 or more games in each of the next three seasons under Torre, who would be fired after a 41-62 record in the strike-shortened '81 season. Wonder what Joe learned in twenty years to make him a hall of fame manager?

"What's up with the Cup?" A brief history of a fine piece of silver.

posted by tommytrump at 11:55 PM on June 05

Does anyone know for sure if there are two Stanley Cups? The one the players get, and one the fans see at malls or arenas around the league. Sometimes you will see it (the fake one) in a mall and you can have your picture taken while touching, hugging or even kissing it. Other times, especially during the playoffs, it will show up in and you can't get within 20 feet and there are guards around it.(the real one)

Fan's punch ends qualifier: The Euro 08 qualifier between Denmark and Sweden was abandoned after a fan attempted to punch the referee. By all accounts an exciting game, with Denmark fighting back from 3 goals down to level the game before Danish midfielder Poulsen was sent off. The ensuing penalty seems to have been what led to the fan's attack. UEFA is to investigate the incident.

I don't get it. Drag the fan off, arrest him, and get on with the match.

I wonder if expansion has diluted the talent base? No. Before expansion the talent base was primarily from Canada. Now the talent base is Earth, a much bigger source for talent.

From 0 to 99 and everything in between. The Sporting News breaks down who are currently the best athletes at each number in sports.

posted by Ying Yang Mafia at 07:25 PM on May 12

"Now, we're choosing the current best athlete at each number" #6 Bobby Cox over Joe Torre, both great managers, but would you consider them athletes? #23 LeBron James - can't argue with that, but no mention of Chris Drury. The man has only won a Little League world series, a NCAA championship, a Stanley Cup, and this year has scored more clutch goals in the regular season and playoffs than anyone. The man is a winner where ever he goes.

Sosa makes history in Rangers' loss There are a lot of unanswered questions about the Rangers, but Sammy Sosa is not one of them.

posted by BornIcon at 05:05 AM on April 28

"Playing in a time of interleague play gives Sosa a distinct advantage over someone like Babe Ruth (who only played in NL parks during the World Series). His PAPHI score would probably be in the .650 range." Babe hit six homers while playing for the Boston Braves in his final season.

Bloody mess: Schilling's sock called into question Gary Thorne, who does play-by-play of Orioles games on the Mid-Atlantic Sports Network (MASN) and has a solid national reputation, having done lots of work for ESPN, brought up the saga of Schilling's bloody sock during last night's telecast.

posted by BornIcon at 06:52 AM on April 26

"Thorne: -- because he doesn't cooperate. 1-2 delivery and that one's taken in the dirt. The great story we were talking about the other night was that famous red stocking that he wore when they finally won, the blood on his stocking. Nah. It was painted. Doug Mirabelli confessed up to it after. It was all for PR. Two ball, two strike count. Palmer: Yeah, that was the 2004 World Series. Thorne: Yeah. Palmer: That second appearance." Game 6 ALCS = Blood Game 2 WS = Paint He realized how much camera time his ankle got in the ALCS that he went and painted it for the World Series to draw more attention for ALS. Is that so hard to figure out?

Panthers' Belfour and Peltonen arrested Once again proving that you can't teach an old dog new tricks.

Something not mentioned in the story, but reported elsewhere, was that after Belfour lunged at the cop, the cop tazered him.

The "old NHL" lives on. Two of the most skilled teams in the league went at it Broad-Street-Bullies-style last night. After a questionable late hit to Chris Drury, all hell broke loose. Senators goalie Ray Emery, back from a 3-game suspension, celebrated by fighting Sabres keeper Martin Biron and enforcer Andrew Peters. Does the NHL need more or less of this?

posted by qbert72 at 02:20 PM on February 23

Emery was a golden gloves boxer in his youth so he can take care of himself. The thing that should bother Sens fans is that no one came to his defence when Peters went after him. What did Murray think Ruff was going to do on the next shift? He is an idiot for sending out 3 of his top skill players when he knows Buffalo's tough guys are coming out. Senators are a gifted talented team that will be gone in the first round again.

Poile didn't take a page from Regier's playbook; stand fast and blow a great chance at winning the cup. (I'm honestly thinking Buffalo's shot was last year....and Regier blew it.) Yes,it was Darcy Regier that gave Tim Connolly a concussion, broke Henrik Tallinder's arm, injected bacteria into a cut on Jay McKee's leg, pulled Teppo Numminen's groin, and did something ( I forget) to Dmitri Kalinin's leg. At the time of the trade deadline Buffalo was healthy and had depth at forward and defence. However no team can survive 4 of their top 5 defencemen going down with injuries in the playoffs

Peyton Manning's Monkey Has Died The Indianapolis Colts proved they were mudders, winning Super Bowl XLI over the Chicago Bears in rain-drenched Miami 29-17. Peyton Manning brings Indy its first pro sports championship since the Pacers won three ABA titles ending in 1973.

posted by rcade at 09:31 PM on February 05

When did the Super Bowl become a battle between which ever team sucks less wins instead of whom ever plays better? If you didn't watch any games the last two years except the Super Bowls, you would wonder how any of them made it that far. This year we saw the real Seattle and Pittsburgh (average teams)and next year we'll see the real Bears(average) At least Indy will still be a little above average, but their best years are behind them.
