Sports Bio

I'm from Ireland, so I support the Dublin GAA teams and the Irish football and rugby teams particularly but I'll cheer for and look out for any Irish team or individual competing on the world stage (yeah I was at a Michelle Smith celebration party a few years back). I was raised a Tottenham Hotspur and London Irish RFC supporter too.

Other than that, I love baseball, and was a regular at Yankee Stadium during my 7 years living in New York. I moved from there to Toronto recently, and I'm a big believer in rooting for the home team, so the Jays are my locals now. If anyone fancies a night at Rogers Centre email me.

Here are all the Irish born men to play major league baseball. Including, I'll have you note, the first man ever to hit for the cycle.

What does it take to save penalties? In contrast to England's Paul Robinson, who saved none of Portugal's spot-kicks, Lehmann saved two of Argentina's four and guessed correctly on the other two. However, guesswork had nothing to do with it.

You hear this in relation to other athletes too - Alex Rodriguez is the one that springs to my mind, commentators will say "there's that jealousy, he's so wealthy, so talented, so handsome". But I've never heard anyone at yankee stadium say "I hate that A-Rod, he's so bloody good looking". It's odd.

After consulting with his family, Beckham hands in captain's armband. You have to wonder how that consultation with the family went...Becks: Do you think I should quit as England captain? Victoria: Yes, can I borrow your sarong? Brooklyn: Yes, Dad. Can I have an Aston Martin? Romeo: Yes, Dad. Can I change this stupid name you've given me now? Cruz: Whhaaaaa!

He does seem to have been enjoying his contrarianism a little too much throughout the cup.

Buh-bye Becks. In other analysis, Terry Butcher ain't pulling his punches. * giggles with glee only appropriate for a Paddy *

World Cup Semifinals Set: Germany, Italy, Portugal and France Both South American teams were knocked out in the Quarterfinals, along with powerhouse England. Argentina, while talented, also suffered from horrible coaching. Deciding it was a good idea to take out their play-maker, Riquelme, at the 72nd minute (Germany scored just 8 minutes later). Participating in their first World Cup, Ukraine surpassed everyone's expectations, but their inexperience showed against a veteran Italian squad. A controversal call against Rooney all but sealed England's fate as Sven continued to play a 4-5-1 with Crouch (a good striker, but he can not play up top by himself). And a beautiful strike by one of the most talented players in the world, Thierry Henry, put France ahead of heavily-favored Brazil. I'm going to say Germany and France advance to the final, Germany wins it all.

I'm just curious, I thought he was posting from the US point of view a while back. I'm going to confess that I find the "adopters" fairly baffling. I'm Irish, we sure ain't in it (thanks Israel!) and I'm still watching it all but can't imagine getting so foul mouthedly invested in another country's team. But different horses, I guess . . . .

Promises kept. Matt LaChappa hasn't thrown a pitch professionally in 10 years. He is confined to a wheelchair, and constrained by the physical fallout from back-to-back heart attacks. Yet the San Diego Padres continue to pay him as if he were an active player. It might be the noblest thing they do. (courtesy of the mlb LJ community)

Priscilla Oppenheimer sounds like a formidable chracter - with a good heart. Fair play to her.
