Curtis Martin Retires. Martin ranks fourth All-Time on the NFL's career rushing list and was the second running back in NFL history to start his career with ten straight 1,000 yard seasons.

Messier leads new class into Hockey Hall The Hockey Hall of Fame is set to welcome one of its finest classes ever. Mark Messier, Ron Francis, Al MacInnis and Scott Stevens will go in as players this fall, while NHL executive Jim Gregory will enter as a builder.

As a lifer Ranger fan, Messier seems like an obvious choice...He is the only player to win the cup twice as a captain. I was at game 7 in MSG back in 94, and Messier lifted the cup and a franchise. He is an integral reason of why I became a die-hard, obsessed, crazed, devout hockey fan...and more importantly Ranger fan. (keep in mind I was 12 in 94) I don't think he is ready to compete to be my GM, but June 14 will live forever in my mind and my heart. What he did for the NY, the fans, and the nhl is sheer poetry. Until I see the blueshirts lift the cup again, he will always be my captain.
"What's up with the Cup?" A brief history of a fine piece of silver.

Denial of Death "You're sure they'll do something before they stand for the national anthem. But with the fans on their feet … the announcer reads from a script over the public address system: Twenty years ago today … four players lost their lives … please stand and honor these players with a moment of silence.
"… The players look down at their skates, the others at their boots. A hush falls over the arena, the only sound the wooden roof creaking. Finally, after 30 seconds, the announcer says: Thank you. Please remain standing for the playing of O Canada.
"And that's it, a moment of silence and nothing more. If you'd never been in Western Canada's Swift Current before, if you didn't know the back story, you might mistake it for tasteful understatement. But if you put your ear to the door, you'd know this is the minimum interruption in a culture of denial in a town where the only thing tougher than looking through a scrapbook might be looking in a mirror."

No. 35 considers running for congress Richter, a 40-year-old Democrat who lives in Guilford, said he expects to make a decision in the next few weeks about whether to run for the Fairfield County seat in 2008.

Richter will be the only democrate that I would ever even think to vote for. Having met him and had the oppertunity to learn from him, i can tell you that he is a better man than a hockey player. Being said, I would consider him to be the best American goalie to ever play the game. When I was growing up he was the goalie that i wanted to play like. I was able to watch him intensely at msg as a youth, and cried when his jersey was retired. I wish him the best in all his endeavors and i know the yale sqaud will miss him when he graduates.
The "old NHL" lives on. Two of the most skilled teams in the league went at it Broad-Street-Bullies-style last night. After a questionable late hit to Chris Drury, all hell broke loose. Senators goalie Ray Emery, back from a 3-game suspension, celebrated by fighting Sabres keeper Martin Biron and enforcer Andrew Peters. Does the NHL need more or less of this?

Constructive Criticism "When you burn the village to save it once, people come back. When you take out part of the village, rebuild it, and then napalm it over the course of a bitterly public, year-long firefight, people leave...With all due respect to the NHL’s more fan-friendly policies, Chairman Mao seems to forget that you can’t make a Great Leap Forward when your foundation’s sagging."

Sadly enough that is a hell of an article. I have been envolved with hockey since I was 5 years old. There is nothing that I love more than the smell of the ice and the sounds of the game. Since moving down south I have realized many facts about the NHL and hockey in general. People dont care. Why not shell out some money and put hockey on a real channel that people can watch, rather than the outdoor network. Where are the marketing genuises that have catapuled the NFL and MLB into profitable enterprises. Bring me Mark Cuban, because at the very least he has the ability to creatively think. Cuban buying the Penguins may be the best thing to happen to the NHL in years. We need passionate owners not crooks like the adelphia brothers. Gary Bettman has got to go. He is so complacent and unable to effect the game positively. Instead of collecting money, why not invest that into earning new fans. I feel very strongly that if someone were to attend a game with an educated fan, there is nothing not to love. Hockey is a very expensive sport to play. Between the ice time, the travel (thanks mom and dad) and the equipment, it is an investment. You can't go to a free field and throw a ball around. Why not have NHL teams get involved with teaching kids the sport, having equipment swap events before games, and take an active role in cultivating new fans. As a former goaltender, I think making the nets bigger is a travesty! All that will do is destroy hockey history and make the incredible records set null and void. I think that it would be beneficial to make all the rinks olympic size. Although you would have to forfit seats (and therefore money) you would really be able to see guys wheel and deal, make things happen, most likely increase scoreing, and keep the speed of the game up. Watching Jagr with the puck during a 4-4 is spectacular. A larger ice surface would allow those moments to happen all the time. I may sound like i am anti-new NHL but that is the furthest from the case. I am a lifelong NY Ranger fan. I bought the center ice pkg so that i can watch my beloved team. I try and get my friends into it (i feel like i am the NHL's own grass roots campaign) but I need help from the guys at the top. Stop messing with the nets, the obstruction calls, and shrinking the goalies pads. Let then game be and start putting some effort into your job (and im mean you Bettman)!
NHL Sticks: Now With 50% More Curve! Not only has the Rules Committee decided to up the allowable stick-curve from 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch, they've updated the shootout rules and are upping the penalties for diving to include fines and suspensions.
Given how the new rules went over last year, this could be interesting.

I realize that higher scoring is a catalyst that is bringing more fans to the games, but who is on the goalie's side. First they decrease our pads, limit us to a trapazoid, and now they are going to increase the curve. Being that most goals are scored on the ice I don't know how the curve increase will help percentage wise. Most goalies stop 80-85% of the shots above the waist. It will def make the shootouts more interesting. Maybe now Jagr won't be called for the illegal stick he has been using forever, causing him to be constantly challenged by the opposition. (yes i am a goalie and a huge ranger fan) What are they going to do next make goalies play without a stick? In regard to diving...good thing ulf samulsson is no longer in the league. :)
The Islanders have officially gone batshit. 15-year deal for DiPietro, $67.5 million. Second in length only to teammate Yashin, who's is a 10-year deal. And by batshit I mean yes, he's a good goalie, but 15 years is a loooong time in the crease (or to expect that kind of consistency).

Well that is the dumbest thing I have ever heard. Since, of course, their first dumbest move when they fired Neil Smith for G. Snow. Who does that?! Unless Wang is printing $ in the basement on the collesium, this is so foolish. I was ok with Yashin's 10 year deal...kinda...but to sign a goalie for that long is un real...i can't even find the words to express how stupid, foolish, and wasteful this deal is. This is a fireable offense. Nothing against Di Pietro...but we are not talking about Patrick Roy or Brodeur in thier prime. Hey I played Div 1 college hockey, maybe they need another manager with no expeirence that they can throw buckets of money at.
Report: Stars to sign Lindros Eric Lindros is expected to sign with the Dallas Stars as early as Sunday, according to a report in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

The results are in and Thorton wins the Hart Trophy as the NHL MVP. The award was given at the NHL Awards show last night. Previously, SpoFites attempted to predict the winners in a Locker Room Thread.

I was actually suprised that Thorton won...maybe I should preface that by saying that I am a lifer Ranger fan. I thought that it would be difficult for a west coaster to win mvp, due to lack of media coverage on the east coast. Jagr lost because of goals. I will say that he was the mvp of the rangers and was the catalyst to their sucess this past season. I also give Renny alot of credit for keeping egos in line and finally making a ranger team click and work together. He desserves alot of credit for that and may be the last coach in the past 10 years that got the rangers to play as a team.
Carolina Hurricanes win the Stanley Cup in Game 7 The Canes came out hard and had a 2-0 lead before the Oilers decided to show up in the third period. Great game, I think I've developed ulcers because of it.

JD is awesome..it took balls to wear 00 in the garden. The only thing that i am going to fault carolina fans about is the fact that i never heard "we want the cup". In 94 I was at the garden to see the Ranger win, and the we want the cup chanting was so loud you could not hear the end of the star spangled banner. I guess ranger history made the fans more rabid. It was a great season, a great playoffs and a great cup finals. I look forward to the fall and many more great matchups. Hopefully the excitement of this series will turn some people into hockey believers!
Rollie the goalie has an owie and will not be back in the series. Chris Pronger can do a lot of things, but can he play goal?

WOW. Talk about a worst case situation. The only reason Edmonton has gotten this far is because of rollie. It really is sad that he could take his team this far and then be injured. I was really on the fence on who I wanted to win the cup this year. I love love love mactavish from his days as a ranger (94) and was totally pulling for a canadian team to win the cup. It would be great for the nhl and for canada. However I also have a soft spot for guys like weight, brind'amour, and wellsley who play so hard everynight and have waited sooo long for the cup. Its too bad weight had to leave edmonton to win a cup. (not that the series is over, but now it is carolina's to lose). If there is a bright side....edmonton has a relatively young team and should look at this as a set back in an otherwise remarkable playoff run. As a goalie who's career was ended by a hit similar to Rollie's I cringed when he slammed into the post. It's definatly his MCL...(same thing happend to me). He'll be back, but it just sucks! Conklin needs to remember that he has a great defense in front of him. He needs to let them do their job and stay in the F-ing NET!!!
And the nominees are... The NHL individual award nominess have been announced. Who will win the Calder Memorial Trophy (rookie of the year), the Frank J. Selke trophy (best defensive forward), the Hart Memorial trophy (MVP), Jack Adams award (coach of the year), James Norris Memorial trophy (best defenseman), Lady Byng Memorial trophy (most gentlemanly player), Lester B. Pearson award (MVP as voted by fellow players), or the Vezina trophy (best goaltender)?

Here is a perfect example of a guy being a better man than a football player. Never arrested, never beat his girlfriend, or held out over money...he even took a pay cut to keep the jets under cap. I've watched him forever and think he has alot to do with my love for the J-E-T-S...I won't say goodbye to Curtis but i will say good luck.
