Sports Bio

I have two favourite sporting events. One as an adult and the other as a child.

The most entertaining sporting event I ever saw as an adult was January 9, 1986. Toronto Maple Leafs at home versus the Edmonton Oilers, 99, Mess, Coffey, and the rest of the boys. At this point in my life I had seasons tickets for the Leafs, I lived in London Ontario, about 2 hrs west of Toronto and as a result sold most of my seats to friends who lived closer to Toronto. I kept tickets for 5 or six games that year and thankfully that was one of them. The Leafs led 5-1 at the end of the first period. The Oilers tied the game at 6, and early in the 3rd, Edmonton led 8-7. Final score 11-9 Toronto! We almost blew the roof off the Carlton Street Cashbox that night.

When I was only 7 years old, living near Toronto, my mother and father threw us kids into the car, drove us to Malton (now Pearson) International Airport. From there, we flew to Montreal, Mom, Dad, my 3 sisters, my brother and I. We watched the Expos play the Astros in a double header. We picniced in the park outside Jarry Park before the games, went for a swim in the pool just beyond the right field fence, and most importantly got Rusty Staub's autograph. I still have it! We flew back to Toronto the same night, we even got to go sit in the cockpit of the Air Canada jet. That's something that wouldn't happen today!
It was the first time any of us, my parents included, had been on a plane. Way too cool.

I've seen the Leafs 4 times at the Air Canada Centre, each time as the guest of friends in their private box. It's the only way to fly, if you can afford it.

I've seen plenty of NFL games in Detroit and Buffalo, C.F.L. games in Olympic Stadium, Frank Clair Stadium, C.N.E. Stadium and Skydome(Rogers Centre).

My family had seasons seats for the Blue Jays for the first 8 years of their existence. I could only guess at how many games I attended, maybe 350? I go to Rogers Centre a couple of times a year for Jays games now, and Comerica Park to see the Tigers at least once a season.

I've been to a Toronto Rock lacrosse game, entirely too much fun and entertainment.

I've seen 2 N.B.A. games live, the Raptors home opener in MoPete's rookie season, and at The Palace of Auburn Hills, against the 76'ers, on the night the Pistons honoured Chuck Daly.

My two sports loves are the Toronto Maple Leafs and the late, lamented Montreal Expos.
May The 'Spo's rest in peace. Damn you Jeffrey Loria, Bud Selig, and the rest of you baseball bastards.

Have we returned to the days of 'Gladiators'? The ice at Montreal's Bell Centre, home of the Canadiens, will be replaced tonight by an eight-sided, chain-link cage that will hold two incredibly fit men using an arsenal of fighting skills and raw violence to pummel the other into submission. Watching the men in the cage - their muscles clenched and red-faced with adrenalin - it is easy to see the comparison to the blood sport of ancient Rome.Mixed martial arts, and especially UFC, the largest purveyor of the sport, is moving from cult interest into the mainstream. Tickets to tonight's event sold out within a minute. CBS is to begin airing fights in prime time next month.

Why the Leafs stink It's not bad luck. It's not bad karma. What it takes to build a chronic loser. Richard Peddie is sitting at a small conference table in his office at the Air Canada Centre. Laying face down on the table in front of him is a paperback copy of Barack Obama's political memoir The Audacity of Hope. Perfect for the CEO of a team about to set a new standard for futility, but that's not the point. The point will be revealed later. For now, Peddie would just like you to know that he enjoys reading books.

CFL Hall confirms class of 2008 Professional football's most dynamic special-teams star is headed to the Canadian Football Hall of Fame. It's taken nearly eight years, but Mike (Pinball) Clemons can finally call himself a Hall of Famer. The five-foot-five native of Clearwater, Fla., truly excelled in a big man's game. He holds the pro football record for single-season all-purpose yards (3,840, set in '97) as well as the career mark (25,438). He captured three Grey Cup titles as a player ('91, '96 and '97) and another as a coach in '04, becoming the first black head coach ever to win the CFL championship. A Heisman Trophy winner while at Boston College, Doug Flutie still holds CFL single-season records for completions (466), yards (6,619) and touchdowns (48) and in 2006 was voted the top player in league history. Last year, he was inducted into both the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame (the first non-Canadian to do so) and the U.S. College Football Hall of Fame. CFL rushing leader Mike Pringle and all-star offensive lineman John Bonk were also among the players named to the Hall on Wednesday while former Saskatchewan Roughriders president Tom Shepherd will be enshrined as a builder at ceremony in September.

Third time is a charm Losing twice to China was enough as Canada is crowned world curling champs. The 'Comeback Canucks' needed no miracle this time.

Those are the two best throws from the outfield I have ever seen!

Maybe that you've ever seen, but not nearly the best. The greatest I ever saw was Ellis Valentine, Montreal Expos, from the foul pole in right field at Olypmic Stadium to the 3rd base bag, on the fly, with the runner out by plenty.

I'm so sick of Chicagoans and their attitude towards success. Sure the cubs haven't won but you guys had the best basketball player of all time. 6 rings should help you forget about your cubs.

Focus Clevelander32, focus.

It is a baseball thread, about consistently weak baseball teams, and Oscar Robertson never played for a Chicago basketball team.

Every now and then the gates come down on a football thread, the lights flash and the Phason Express hammers through and derails.

That sentence reminds me of these commercials. Of course phason's rants are neither cool, refreshing, or intoxicating.

There is about as much body and substance in a Coor's Light as in his rants though.

How the HELL do you lacerate a spleen?

This is the second time I've heard of a player lacerating their spleen during an NHL game.

Peter Forsberg had to have his spleen removed after helping the Avalanche knocking off the Los Angeles Kings in the first round, missing the rest of the 2001 playoffs and all of the 2002 season.

Didn't Nik Borschevsky have some sort of spleen issue when he was with the Leafs?

Clemens reportedly had affair with country star Roger Clemens has another potential scandal he's already denying. He reportedly had a affair with country singer Mindy McCready in a decade-long relationship that began when she was 15 and Clemens was a 28-year old with the Red Sox. This could be especially damaging as Clemens' defamation suit against Brian McNamee proceeds.

Cheerleader death renews calls for increased safety steps. "Figures show 50 percent of injuries to young women in high school athletics are from cheerleading," [state Rep. Peter J. Koutoujian, chairman of the Public Health Oversight Committee] said. "These girls don’t wear pads, and they’re pushing the boundaries at every turn. While the boys' sports, contact sports, get all the attention, there's a great deal of injuries these young women endure."

afl-aba, Thanks for the tip. I guess that CBS stands for Canadian Broadcasting Service.

No, CBS stands for Columbia Broadcasting System. Just in case you're unaware, CBS is available in Canada, both as an over-the-air, and on basic cable televison. Here in Canada we do have a television network referenced by the call letters CBC(Canadian Broadcasting Corporation). Perhaps that's why you were confused.

America is a war nation. Always has been.

As is Canada, in World War I, Canada suffered casualties(dead and wounded) of over 3% of her population, in comparison, the U.S.A. suffered losses of 0.35% of hers. In World War II Canada suffered casualties of about 1% of her population, in comparison the U.S.A. had casualties of about 1.17%. Canada has fought in Korea, and now in Afganistan suffering brutal losses as well.

Wow, we are a bloodthirsty bunch up here. Maybe this explains hockey after all.

Ha ha. Get literal much?

Got milk?

Engage in hyperbole and exaggeration much?

I said, quite clearly, and in English, that being an American, living among other Americans, that the homeland variety was my chief concern. Easy to scoff at those you don't live among or where you don't pay taxes. One's own turf should be one's primary focus.

I'll point it out again, though others already have. This is an article in a Canadian newspaper, about an event in Canada. How you grasp at this to tear at the U.S.A's military excursions is clutching at straws at best.

That article was preapproved by administration.

and posted to culture to boot.

The primary focus of that article is what about the culture of the sport attracts and repells people from the event. Where pray tell should it have been posted?

Fukudome doesn't find racist T-shirts in Wrigleyville funny A Fukudome T-shirt with a racist image is the hottest-selling item at a souvenir stand that sells unlicensed Cubs-related merchandise across Addison Street from the ballpark.......... The Cubs front office was flooded with angry emails from fans in response to a Sun-Times story about a controversial T-shirt being sold outside of Wrigley Field. People who don't use complete sentences. You know, people who do this ........... instead of completing a thought, and starting a sentence, with, like, you know, a capital letter at the beginning of the first word in the sentence and a period at the end of a statement or expression of thought. Oh, and brand new members telling long time respected members our our community to F you is really really wrong.
