Inside Man: A Bronx Tale Bronx Banter's Alex Belth profiles Ray Negron. His life in baseball began in 1973, when Steinbrenner himself caught the teenager spray painting an "NY" logo on the outside of the Stadium and gave him a job as a bat boy. "Negron has done everything from shine the players' shoes and collect their dirty jockstraps, to bring them food from their favorite restaurants and park their cars. He has been an agent, an actor, an advisor, and a liaison; a confidant, a sounding board and a whipping boy to some of the biggest egos in the game. He is whatever he needs to be." Champions League on ice? Well, it may not be quite as illustrious as the futbol version, but International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) president Rene Fasel proposes a club championship game between the Stanley Cup winner and the European Champions Cup winner. Should the game get played, I'm guessing that the trustees will deny any challenge for the Cup. [via MrFrisby in the spofi campfire]

Pistorius fails to make Olympic team After winning the right to compete against able-bodied runners, Pistorius failed to meet the qualifying time for the 400 meters in his final attempt, and two others were chosen as alternates.

He's got grit but he should stick to the Special Olympics.

I think you mean Paralympics. At least I hope that's what you mean.

Rob Green: 21 days that changed my life. This summer West Ham's goalkeeper did without the traditional footballer's holiday and went instead to Africa to work with a charity that helps the truly disadvantaged – and uses football to get its message across. Here Rob Green describes an experience that was both shattering and ultimately uplifting.

I would be so happy to read about an American athlete doing something similar

Maybe not quite on the same level as Green, but NY Red Bull Seth Stammler set up the Sporting Chance Foundation after a trip to Haiti.

It was very ugly for Uggla NEW YORK -- They cheered the legends. They cheered the hometown heroes. They cheered the old owner. They booed the commissioner, booed Terry Francona and Billy Wagner, even booed Sarah Jessica Parker. But towards the merciful end of The All-Star Game That Would Never End, the Yankee Stadium Bleacher Creatures had energy only for one chant: "Hit it to Uggla."

posted to Baseball at 10:24 PM CDT

The fans did a lot of booing IMO...what happened to enjoying a friendly exhibition?

Who said we didn't enjoy it?

Thanks Ufez. Here are some from the HR Derby.

Though you could now easily start an "Asses of Baseball Players" pool.

I'm sure there's already a group for that.

It is one thing to give a good-natured hooting and ribbing, but from what I've read, this went far beyond that.

What exactly did you read?

I apologise to you, goddam ...

Don't bother Howard. I booed and chanted all night. And I make no apologies for it. I was there to have fun, not to put on a show for the home audience.

Here's the article that was linked via Chad Finn's blog in the Boston Globe

So you're upset about the parade or the game? Or both?

I agree that if what Papelbon claimed is true (and from yerfatma's link I'm sure he heard quite an earful along the way), that's not cool. Boos are one thing, threats are another. But I can only speak for what happened at the game, which I think was to be expected. If you want to call it low-class, fine. If Sox fans are upset about it, I'm sure there will be payback next week. Like I said I was there to have fun, and although the game was excruciating to watch I had a great time. Actually it was like being at a Yankees game. Bases loaded, nobody out, can't score a run. It was great.

A fun article about Yankee Stadium from a Boston Globe writer. Some great moments from the most famous stadium in the world on the eve of its final All-Star game. My first trip to Yankee Stadium was the 1960 New York Giants vs Pittsburgh Steelers game. What was your first game or best memory?

Bobby Murcer, 62, Yankee on Field and Air, Dies Bobby Murcer, the Yankees' All-Star outfielder and longtime broadcaster who never became another Mickey Mantle, but endeared himself to Yankee fans in a baseball career of over four decades died Saturday in Oklahoma City.

This is a tough one. I was pretty broken up about Rizzuto last year, but Bobby was almost like a friend. I know that sounds like an exaggeration but it's true. I have vague memories of the tail end of his playing days (but I'm well aware of his place in Yankees history.) I mostly know him as a broadcaster. He had this "Aww shucks" quality to in his Oklahoma drawl. Made his in-game storytelling that much more enjoyable for me. I'm not sure what else to say that hasn't already been said in the past day. He will be missed by a lot of people in this game.

The Voting Results Are In The fan and player voting has been completed and the All Star rosters have been announced. There is still the Final Vote where fans have the opportunity to choose one final All Star. As usual the results do not come without controversy, with numerous experts weighing in. The team by team breakdown of the All Star rosters can be found here.

The infeild would be even better if the starting players at 3rd Base and Shortstop weren't Yankee players.

So you'd rather hear 5 of the starting 9 hitters booed instead of just 3? And please don't tell me that Varitek deserves to be an All-Star this year. We all have our homer picks but that's just over the line. Every year people talk about taking the vote away from the fans for making stupid choices, but maybe it's time to take the vote away from the players.

And Griffey not making the team is a just wrong. He was 4th in the voting among outfielders and they couldn't even put him on the final vote ballot?

Comment icon posted at 10:23 PM CDT on July 7

By the end of the week, the people most pissed about the Varitek selection are going to be Red Sox fans who have to hear about it. Anything that gives Steve Phillips air time depletes my soul.

At least you'll probably get to see me get trampled live on TV during the HR Derby along with hundreds of other Yankee fans. That should cheer you up.

Well, Navarro used to be on the Yankees roster if that helps but he does deserve to be an All-Star this year.

I agree. Just as deserving as Scott Kazmir.

Brewers make trade for pitcher C.C. Sabathia Minor-league prospect Matt LaPorta is included in the deal In a bold move designed to end the club’s 26-year playoff drought, the Milwaukee Brewers agreed in principle Sunday night to acquire Cleveland left-handed pitcher C.C. Sabathia in exchange for top prospect Matt LaPorta and three others.Neither side would officially confirm the deal because paperwork still was being completed and medical records exchanged. But a source familiar with the discussions said minor-league pitchers Zach Jackson and Rob Bryson also were in the deal. The fourth player could turn out to be third baseman Taylor Green, the Brewers' minor-league player of the year in 2007.

Will Sabathia be a free agent at the end of this year?

Yes.

Video: Diamondbacks Catcher Chris Snyder Fractures Left Testicle Although the injury report just says that Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Chris Snyder is on the 15-day DL with a groin injury, the team revealed that he suffered a "left testicular fracture" Monday when hit by a foul ball. "Suspended in the scrotum, a skin pouch below the penis, each testicle is surrounded by the tunica albuginea, a tough, fibrous covering that often takes the hit of trauma to the gland," according to UrologyHealth.Org. "Like the shell of an egg, it can be easily 'fractured' or shattered when confronted by a blunt or violent force." See the video.
