MLS announces expansion team New York City FC

The stadium in Queens is not a done deal.

As a RBNY supporter, I've been against NY2 for a number a reasons. When the rumors started that MCFC would be involved, that jumped to the top of my list. The hypocrisy of MLS doing business with Sheikh Mansour after rolling out their 'Don't Cross the Line' campaign two months ago is almost laughable.

This game was supposed to be played at Red Bull Arena, with the second leg to be played on Wednesday at DC. But the venues were switched due to damage and power outages from Sandy to the area around RBA. It's still uncertain whether there will be PATH service (the subway line that goes directly to the stadium) will be running by Wednesday's game.

Sorry, goddam, but if the Red Bulls could draw like the Sounders RBA would be much larger.

No need to apologize. I wish we drew numbers like that as well.

We have a whole list of things working against us, from competing with 9 other pro teams during various parts of the season to incompetent ownership/front office. The advertising budget that the mothership in Austria gives to RBNY is embarrassing for the NY Metro market. This year RB North America has been helping out on the marketing end, but they don't know shit about the sport. As a 'thank you' to supporters they sent everyone a can a Red Bull in the mail. With the money they spent on that mailing they could have helped us out with tifo funds or bus trips.

Sorry for the rant. It's been a frustrating year (which has sadly been the case for the last 17 years.)

Meet the Cup of Coffee Club

I met one of the members of the Cup of Coffee Club in 2007, former Yankee Hal Stowe. He was sitting next to me in the bleachers at Yankee Stadium for a Yankees/Mets game, along with at least 10 members of his family. He was in town for his 50th wedding anniversary.

He didn't talk too much about his career. He did tell me it was the first time he was back at the stadium since his days with the team. And he claims to have thrown batting practice the day that Maris hit #61.

When I got home that night I tried to look for info online. That's when I saw that he pitched one game in relief in 1960. In '61 he broke camp with the team after receiving the Most Outstanding Young Pitcher Award in spring training. But there was a personality conflict with new manager Ralph Houk. Stowe was kept on the bench until May, when he was sent down to the minors. The Yankees eventually released him in '63. He was picked up by Minnesota in '64, but never reached the majors again.

Here's a story about an unusual win he got while playing for Charlotte.

Eric Wynalda's 'Eff You' to American Soccer

Maybe it's because I follow English football down to the Conference levels, but I see MLS sides level with the Championship to League Two.

I never understood this argument against MLS. Why should it matter if the league is not on par with the best in the world? A league as young as MLS can't be expected to be top shelf 16 years into its existence. Yes, there are many things that could/should be improved. But it's a far cry from where it was in 1996.

Don't mean to call you out specifically jjzucal. I've heard this argument so many times. Once in a while we can convert someone. So if you're game, first beer at RBA is on me.

If you're going to make stuff up, at least let it be reasonable

I wish I was making it up. The Red Bulls face the winner in the next round. If NE won we'd get a home game next Tuesday. If it was Harrisburg we'd be traveling out there. I turned off the audio feed of the game when the Revs went up 3-0 figuring we'd have a home game next week. A little while later I get a text from a friend saying that he's in for Harrisburg and is looking for a ride. He was on the drive back from Charleston after the RBNY game, so I figured he didn't see the score. But then I checked the Twitters and my jaw dropped.

I see a bunch of injuries listed, but it this a case of the MLS teams not fielding their best sides or something else?

Generally MLS sides will play enough starters to ensure a win. Sometimes it's just players not taking the lower league teams seriously and playing down to their opponent's level. You always get a few of those teams knocking out MLS sides, but never this many in one shot.

Crazy night in the third round of the US Open Cup (the US version of the FA Cup). 7 of the 14 MLS sides to play yesterday lost to lower-league teams. The most dramatic upset was Harrisburg City Islanders defeating the NE Revolution. Scoreless through 90, NE scored 3 in the first 15 minutes of extra time. Harrisburg answered with 3 in the second 15, sending the match to PKs. Benny Feilhaber's fifth round shot was stopped by Harrisburg's keeper, sealing the victory. Video.

Mariano Rivera Tears ACL Shagging Fly Balls

Is he constantly running from fly ball to fly ball? It might be the only running he does. I'm not saying it can't be beneficial in several ways. But if it's the way fly balls are normally shagged (stand around, jog over to catch ball, stand around), it's not keeping in him shape

I've seen a decent amount of Yankees batting practice. Yes, he did do more than stand around, jog to catch ball, stand around. He wasn't sprinting around the entire outfield. But the amount of running I saw him do was about equal to the running drills I saw the other pitchers do. Most of the time I saw him in center/right-center by himself as opposed to hanging out by the warning track gabbing with other players.

Get your pencils out..

If you're kicked out of another stadium, that team's FO will contact your team's FO and give them the details. Usually this is known right away since any traveling support that numbers over 50 (I think) is accompanied by someone from the team's FO. For about 2 years now they have had this in place. Any misconduct done at an away game will have consequences on your status at your home stadium.

For example, we're traveling to DC on Sunday and our Ops guy will be with us. So he'll know right away if any of our fans are booted for misconduct. If they are, they will need to go through this course to be permitted back to our home stadium. We do have an appeals process, but if the evidence is clear there's not much we (as SGs leaders) can do on their behalf.

Had another meeting with the Red Bulls front office last night. They've officially implemented this with us. It only applies to non-criminal acts though. Those committing criminal acts do not have the option of taking the course. And it extends to conduct at away games as well.

Are you really shocked at the NY media blowing something up? The only other circumstances where they would not blow this up would be if the Knicks weren't shit for [insert number of years they've been shit]. Yes, his ethnicity is a story unto itself. But he'd still be a big deal around here if he wasn't Asian.

The NFL season is over and MLB isn't in full swing yet. The Rangers are doing well, but they only get back page coverage if there are no other big stories. And around here, the Knicks winning is a big story. Add in the fact that his name lends itself to an endless amount puns, this story isn't leaving the back page any time soon.

Is it an easy ground to drive to, or should I go to somewhere like New Haven and get the train?

Depends on how comfortable you are driving in Jersey. It's not far off of the NJ Turnpike. Our bar is a half mile away in Newark (you can see the stadium from the patio) and has free parking. It tends to get full but if you're there early enough getting a spot isn't a problem. The train is close as well. Maybe a .5 mile to our bar (with more bars along the way) and another .5 mile from the bar to the stadium.

As long as they don't mind standing for 90 minutes bring whoever you want.

Pit Bull Ban Keeps Mark Buehrle Out of Miami

I don't find it unreasonable to think there might be genetic or bred disposition to attack in certain species.

Aggression against other dogs is an inherent trait within pit bull type dogs. It doesn't always present itself, but the potential is there. Aggression against humans is not an inherent trait within pit bull type dogs. Pit bulls that are aggressive towards humans are like that because they were mishandled by humans.

While we're talking stats, here's one (take from the Villalobos Rescue Center site).

The American Temperament Test Society provides testing around the country for dog breeds and provides a passing score for the entire breed, based on the percentage of passed over failed within total number of that particular breed tested. As of March 2001, the American Pit Bull Terrier has a current passing rate of 82.3% which makes him one of the top 5 most stable breed of dog in the country.

Obviously, breed specific legislation is not the ideal solution. However, the better options cost money. Better animal control to prevent dogs running loose and better evaluating dogs that have shown aggressive behavior are not as cheaply done as getting rid of a breed.

Exactly. Or better education of the public as to the potential risks of pit bull ownership. Or prosecution of those who are abusing these animals in the first place. But it's easier to just blame the dog than the humans that mistreated it.

Flyers Fans Attacked Rangers Fans After Winter Classic

But it doesn't take a lot of imagination to think that Geno's would be an unstable and potentially unsafe scene for a couple of guys wearing Rangers jerseys at that very moment, and I think most hockey fans from Jersey would understand that very unfortunate fact.

I don't know if I'd say most fans from Jersey understand that, but quite a few do. A friend of mine (from Central Jersey and a lover cheesesteaks) decided to just go straight home after the game because he knew he could find himself in trouble if he stuck around.

Say what you want about soccer but most places seem to deal with this crap the right way.

While I hesitate to commend the Philadelphia Union on anything, they do a decent job with visiting fans and security. Maybe they should've advised the city on how to handle this game. When Red Bull fans travel down there we're sequestered in a private parking area, escorted in and out of the game, and our section is lined with security guards and police officers. Their front office has all but flat out told me it's because of the behavior of their fans and not ours. I'm not saying that Rangers fans should have been segregated during the game. But there should have been ample security near the tourist spots afterwards, especially at a place like Geno's.
