Sidney Crosby = the new Larry Bird? "Some even suggest that having Crosby in the Cup finals could give the NHL the same enormous boost in popularity the NBA received way back in 1984, when Magic Johnson of the Los Angeles Lakers and Larry Bird of the Boston Celtics met in that league's championship series." Well then.

Newbie with great seats observes the game. Curt Schilling gets great court-side seats and shares his observations as a sports star, but basketball novice (after some comments about the Red Sox).

And if racist claims like that can come about a league where Steve Nash and Dirk Nowitzki (a Canadian and a German, mark you) are two of the best players in the league, you really don't pay much attention to the sport.

I'd have to agree with the author of the story that yes, the Crosby revival of the NHL is possible, but at best unlikely. Unless you know where to find it, the Cup finals can be and have been difficult to find on television. If anyone can do it, Sid the Kid can, but hockey just hasn't gotten enough publicity, in my opinion. I wish it had, it's an amazing sport. I first got into it the last year it ran on ESPN (2), in 2003-04. Then the strike happened, and I've never been able to find enough of it again.
Yeah. Enough ranting about nothing from me.
Want some flies with those fries? It may not be just your team's stats that make you ill. WARNING: not for the weak of stomach or Los Angeles Angels fans.

Boston Herald Apologizes for False SpyGate Story "On Feb. 2, 2008, the Boston Herald reported that a member of the New England Patriots' video staff taped the St. Louis Rams' walkthrough on the day before Super Bowl XXXVI," the paper announces in today's edition. "... we now know that this report was false, and that no tape of the walkthrough ever existed." One fan's reaction to the Pats' hometown newspaper running a false story about the team the day before the Super Bowl: "now and forever the Herald is dead to me."

The fact that the Herald reported this without first finding further proof of the tape's existence is still inexcusable. When you're at a newspaper reporting to thousands of people about (most of their) favorite football team, you better be pretty darn sure you're right, ESPECIALLY when you're saying something bad about them.
I still haven't really decided what I think about the whole Spygate thing. Yeah, the Patriots "cheated". But yet apparently they didn't actually break any rules, and now apparently they're getting off without any punishment. If it works, it works, I guess. And besides, tapes or no tapes, to be able to execute as well as they did is still a credit to their ability and the coaching skills of the Hoodie.

Wow, whiff on my part. Apologies. I really need to pay more attention before opening my piehole for purposes other than food.
Recapping baseball's weird, wild and wet first month. The cool, cruel month produced a ton of surprising stars, and an equal number of shocking individual disappointments.

I like the point about Dave Duncan on page 2. The Cardinals have been riding the top of the league and the NL Central for almost the whole month, and that's with NO pitching staff whatsoever. And that's right, ladies and gentleman: nobody's noticed anything but the Cubs staying even with them, and that's after the Cards post their best April in club history.
The Epic of Craig Biggio You ever go to a movie, it' s pretty good for about an hour and a half but then the story is over but it's like the director can't find the ending so it goes on for another half-hour looking for some way to tie things together? That's kind of Biggio's career; it was over, and then it went on for quite awhile.
posted to Baseball at 9:38 AM CDT
Well debated, gentlemen. That was fun to read.
I'd also like to echo the sentiments of previous Cardinals fans in this thread that I'd love Biggio were he not an Astro. The guy always seemed to find ways to get rallies going, AGAINST my team. He was a great player, though, that I can't deny.
Perfect No More The Miami Dolphins beat the Baltimore Ravens 22 - 16 Sunday in Miami, thus ruining their chances of becoming the only team in NFL history to post two perfect regular-season records. In other news, Baltimore Ravens now NFL's most embarrassed team.

lovely day to be a Ravens fan. (cries)
After the heartbreaker to the Patriots two weeks ago, the mauling by the Colts last week, and now to be the first team to lose to the Dolphins... bleh.
Kay, i'm done whining. but I agree with chico, i was looking forward to the undefeated vs. the undefeating next week, that would've been entertaining. not that 1-13 vs. 14-0 won't be, of course.
McLaren drops Robinson and Beckham for final Euro 2008 qualifying group match. After riding the qualifying rollercoaster almost off the rails, and having their campaign pulled back on the tracks by an improbable 2-1 win by Israel over Russia, England manager Steve McLaren has opted for relatively junior players Scott Carson (Aston Villa keeper) and Shawn Wright-Philips (Chelsea winger) instead of stalwarts Paul Robinson and David Beckham. With England only needing a draw to qualify for next year's competition, is McLaren making another unnecessary gamble? (Last Friday's friendly with Austria that ended with Michael Owen injured, and only one viable striker left for tomorrow's match is considered another recent example.)

Looks as though your odds on McLaren getting the boot are a good 10:9 at lowest, worldcup2002, as the FA Board holds an emergency meeting in the morning to discuss his future.
As an American, I give all ye Brits some advice on this day: Give thanks. (that McLaren's done.)
Sox Will Face Rocks in World Series The Boston Red Sox beat the Cleveland Indians 11-2, completing a comeback from 3-1 to win the American League Championship Series. They'll face the Colorado Rockies Wednesday in the World Series for Game 1 in Fenway Park.

I'd have to agree with grum on the Matt Holliday issue. The only reason he's not one of the most talked about players in baseball is because he plays in Colorado. The guy won two legs of the Triple Crown in the NL this year and I don't believe a single person noticed. Here are some of the most gaudy parts of his statline, along with their NL ranks.
Avg. - .340 - 1st
HR - 36 - 4th
RBI - 137 - 1st
hits - 216 - 1st
2B - 50 - 1st
R - 120 - 3rd
OBP - .405 - 6th
SLG - .607 - 2nd
OPS - 1.012 - 3rd
Worth paying some attention to, yes?
McLaren lose 2007 points, fined $100m but Alonso and Hamilton keep their driver's points. They are, however, barred from appearing on the podium the rest of the season. More news here.

...I like Chrysler Sebrings...happen to drive one m'self, actually.
but besides that, that is a large amount of money. a very, very, VERY large amount of money. i read that this was the largest F1 fine ever issued by oh, about 40 times the previous record of US$2.5M? Crazy stuff.
See, Bill Belichick, your fine's not so bad.
All-Ireland final weekend. This Sunday sees Limerick take on Kilkenny in the hurling final. Kilkenny are favourites, without a doubt, but historically Limerick just edge it, with four wins and three losses against the Kilkenny Cats. With the demand for tickets so high the largest screen in Europe will be used in Limerick to broadcast the game on O'Connell St.

I went and watched all of the Youtube videos about it, 'cause i hadn't the slightest idea what hurling was, but now I do. This is quite cool stuff. Makes me wish I lived in Europe and not the stupid US of A.
advantage is, I am a bit Irish.
Texas 30 - Baltimore 3 ... wasn't an NFL preseason matchup but the rather the Rangers posting the highest major league run total in 110 years. I guess there is no mercy rule in the MLB.

all i have to say about this is DAAAAAAANG. nice football score.
side note, end of the 5th in game 2, Rangers are up in that game 6-5, giving them 36 runs on the day. So far. I believe that ties the ML record for runs by one team on one day (the one game record from 1897 was 36) or something like that. they just keep coming.
Who's Now Pissed -- ESPN Viewers Hammer Network Over 'Buzz' Competition "This is a command performance column -- the command having been issued by the hundreds of viewers who asked me to say something about the Who's Now segments that ran on SportsCenter throughout July. No single topic has ever drawn the volume and intensity of unsolicited complaints to either my or my predecessor's mailbox that this sports popularity contest has." -- ESPN ombudsman Le Anne Schreiber

I was also not a big fan of the "Who's Now" crap. Speaking as someone who has been thinking about going into college looking at sports journalism as a major, it's disappointing to see that this is what sports journalism has been reduced to. I like some good analysis of actual games, not of which athlete is more "now". This whole shenanigan hasn't changed my ideas about my future, but I think I'd rather not work at ESPN if everything comes out to that. Bah. Executives.
Beautifully done work, there. Wish I'd seen the match, must've been quite a scene.
