Force makes history as first female Funny Car winner Another woman winning in a major auto sport. I think it is even better since she beat her dad in the finals. Congratulations Ashley.

More Bad Noose for Pro Golf Although the story appeared to be dying down after the Golf Channel anchor Kelly Tilghman apologized to Tiger Woods for her "lynch him" remark, Golfweek has just thrown gas on the fire with its cover story and illustration.

BCS officials reject playoff proposal Bowl Championship Series officials rejected a plan Wednesday to turn the much-criticized system for deciding a national champ into a four-team playoff. The BCS format will remain the same until at least the 2014 season.

They will eventually cave in as long as their are situations like Boise State, Georgia, and Hawaii that come up just about every year. The public outcry will be too much for them to ignore any longer.
We all know they can come up with an 8 or 16 team playoff system using the bowl games they have now. It might have to be a revolving type thing like they have now but that isn't so bad. The bottom line is $$$$$$$$$$. They have to figure out a way where they can make even more of it with a playoff system. When they do, the system will change.

If you put in a system that gives teams a chance to win a national championship even though they lose a game here and there, all the money that was going to the schools for these huge regular season games shrinks.
Didn't LSU lose a game this past year?

Back in the old rubber balls days, every bowling ball was black.
Cheerleader death renews calls for increased safety steps. "Figures show 50 percent of injuries to young women in high school athletics are from cheerleading," [state Rep. Peter J. Koutoujian, chairman of the Public Health Oversight Committee] said. "These girls don’t wear pads, and they’re pushing the boundaries at every turn. While the boys' sports, contact sports, get all the attention, there's a great deal of injuries these young women endure."

NASCAR Rookie Survives Unbelievable Crash NASCAR Sprint Cup rookie Michael McDowell tested the new safety features in the Car of Tomorrow yesterday during qualifying at Texas Motor Speedway, slamming into a Steel and Foam Energy Reduction (SAFER) barrier at more than 100 mph and rolling eight times (see the video). "That was the hardest hit I think I've ever seen anybody take," driver Tony Stewart said.

If you go back and watch the accident Friday and the one Dale Sr. had in Daytona, you'll see major differences between the two. Dale's car hit square to the wall. That is the worst kind of impact to have. All of his forward momentum stopped at impact. It creates a strain on the body that sometimes it just can't handle. I realize there is a huge safety difference between today and then. Back then, the cars were built strong. They didn't absorb the impact like they do today. If you look at Dale's car after it stopped, only the nose of the car was damaged. The weakest link in Dale's accident was Dale himself. When Michael spun, the car spun around enough where it hit on the left front and the car still had forward momentum after it hit. The wall, the car, and the rolling over took the impact. I know Nascar catches a lot of flack but they should be commended for putting so many safety features into these cars.

I agree dyams. PNC Park is a gorgeous ballpark. I go to a few games a year and love being able to look out at the city at night. It is a great place to watch a game.
I grew up watching the Orioles and Colts at Memorial Stadium. It was a dump of a stadium but I still carry many wonderful memories from that place. You can't even tell where the stadium use to be today. Very sad.

The tone was set on the first play when the Giants rushed through and knocked Brady down. The Giants defense played the game of their lives last night. Even though they were gassed in the 4th quarter, they made life tough on Brady. I kept watching the game thinking New England would throw it into gear and start scoring points but the Giants defense held their ground. It was a game where you couldn't take your eyes off what was going on. A very good game and one of the best Super Bowls in a long long time. Congrats to Eli and the Giants for slaying the dragon.
The Ricky Roma of Golf: In which Joel Waldfogel provides statistical (and literary) proof that when Tiger Woods is in the field, he makes everyone else play worse, whether he's on his game or not.
"It's generally agreed that people work harder when they are paid for performance. Anyone who has ever languished in a Paris cafe—where service compris translates roughly as "the Republic of France mandates a minimum 15 percent tip regardless of service quality"—can appreciate the power of incentives. But the effects of incentives appear to be muted when the incentives are based on relative performance and the competition is tough."

It is common knowledge that no one can just go out and beat Tiger. Usually when he gets beat, he has one bad round and gets so far behind he can't catch up. Of course, there are those rare occations when Tiger just doesn't play well. When Tiger is on, it turns into trying the be "The best of the rest." See Sunday's Buick Open results for an example. When Tiger is on, he has everyone beat before the tournament starts. Can you imagine what the other golfers think and feel when they see Tiger's name soaring up the leaderboard during a second or third round? It's like, "I think I can, I think I can". That is, until Tiger goes zooming by. Then its, I'll try and beat everyone else. Congrats to Tiger for tying Arnold Palmer for 4th place on the All-Time wins list with 62.

I wonder if he can tell by the sound the ball makes when he rolls if it is a good throw.
Being a bowler, the ball sounds the same no matter how you throw it. The bowling alley would have to be pretty quiet to even hear the ball on the lane to begin with. He can tell by the way he releases the ball. He'll feel that through his fingers, hand, and arm swing.
It is an incredible feat. I have never thrown a 300. The best I've done is 288. I can't imagine doing that with my eyes closed. Even though there are some nights I feel like I'm bowling blind.
