2 men shot in Houston's Reliant Stadium parking lot after the US and Mexico play to a thrilling 2-2 draw. In a sick sort of way, is it possible this shooting is good for soccer in America? This "friendly" was played before 70,103 fans and the nosie was so loud the players couldn't communicate with each other or hear the official's whistle.

Munich disaster for Manchester United - 50 years ago today. A day of remembrance Eight Busby Babes, including Duncan Edwards, died in the air crash. Manager Matt Busby was pronounced dead twice before rising to lead the team into the next decade, winning the European Cup in 1968. Many English clubs came to the aid of United, providing players so United could continue their season.

South Korean soccer players dislocate their shoulders to become draft dodgers Why bother with serving your country when the U.S is there as your minders? Makes me reminisce of my days eating kimchi and swigging ginseng from the bottle.

De La Hoya wins easy decision "But fighters have been known to change their retirement plans as easily as they change gloves, and the only thing for certain is that De La Hoya will add many more millions to his already fat bank accounts before he finally hangs the gloves up for good. Mayweather has yet to sign for the rematch, though De La Hoya expressed confidence that the money would be too great for him to refuse."

The best thing about Oscar these days is that he's heavily invested in the Houston Dynamo and you can see their logo on his shorts.
LA Galaxy reserve team uses ticket agent to fill out game day roster They didn't want to play short-handed. Anybody here know how to play this game?

Thank you again for destroying a perfectly good thread with your sales pitch. While it is wonderful that you are clearly very committed to the sport, this is not a forum about your qualificiations, but rather about interesting stories in sports.
Bingo.

You guys need to get a clue to what soccer is about before you post your pathetic comments, they are a waste of my quality reading time.
38 years in soccer, hotshot, I played in England and Scotland as a 16 year old and South Korea as an 18 and 19 year old...12 years as coach of a men's amateur team and 3 seasons coaching kids with the main focus being player development. Currently in process of creating a foundation to help underprivileged kids and their families with all costs associated with playing on a team. We're also developing a program to help the single parents of some of these kids with job training and placement. This is all volunteer work, of course. Some of you may remember I wrote about doing this when I first joined spofi.
The sarcasm and negativity you receive is warranted, considering how you come in here talking about you, you, you, and some pie in the sky program of which you obviously aren't competent enough to get off the ground.
Come back when you've actually done something. In the meantime, you're doing nothing but creating ill will, which is pretty hard to do with this group when you're talking about soccer development for kids. Stop writing and start doing.

I saw the Barcelona and MAN U 0-0 game a few days ago...after close to two hours of effort, neither team managed to score a goal, and Cristiano Ronaldo missed a penalty...so you tell me, how is that possible, and I tell you I know why, no player on that field knows the true physics of the soccer ball...
Big mystery here...he didn't have his body over the ball correctly and struck it well below the mid-spot. Doesn't take a lot of science to figure that out. If this is what you want to teach kids, you're going to lose them. Kids want to play the game, that's what they do. You'll lose their attention in the blink of an eye if you start talking about the physics of a soccer ball.
And....you might have taken a clue from my user name...I'm a Texan...I'm not British...not that there's anything wrong with that....
"This fella, Ronaldo, he's a cod" RTE's TV pundits show they really don't like Cristiano Ronaldo (via). Why does he seem to polarise opinion in a way that other players don't?

As a United fan, the really difficult fact in all this is Ronaldo is much less a cheater now than he was his first three years at Old Trafford...
I wish all these fuckers would just stand up and play. What happened to the days when lying on the ground meant you weren't tough enough to play the game, when even showing you were injured meant you were weak?
If you don't give my football back... Just as Ebbsfleet United is about to play one of the biggest ties in its history, it looks like the teams' 29,000(+/-) owners are having a little trouble with the "pick the team" part of their tagline. And with only 2,000 of those owners committed past the first year of the experiment, there is some concern about the future of the model.

As a MyFC member, I never had any intention of submitting a team selection. What the hell do I know? I think the 98.5% to 99% who don't bother with picking the team trust the manager to do what's right for the club to get a result. It's a non-issue for me and I will defintely renew my membership to continue being an owner.
Steeler announcing great dies at 79 He was Pittsburgh's Harry Carry. You loved or hated him. Very rarely did he make sense but more times then not, you found youself turning down the TV and turning up the radio to hear Cope announce the game. He was a legend in Pittsburgh and he will not soon be forgotten. If you never heard him, you missed a great one. Pop open an Iron City at Cope's Cabana and drink to one of the greats.

My wife grew up in Pittsburgh and love this guy. I have to say, after hearing that voice through her ears, I grew to like him a bit myself. I'll take a guy like Cope over so many of the robots we now find in the booth. He didn't come from a cookie cutter and I think the sports announcing landscape will continue to go downhill without unique personalities and voices like Cope's.
RIP, Mr. Cope.
Arsenal's Eduardo Da Silva injured in outrageous tackle, possibly ending his career. A truly horrific injury, broken pieces of bone were sticking out of his sock as he was stretchered of the field. This is the sort of injury that you never truly recover from (See Alex Smith). I hope the FA bans Martin Taylor for life.

From reading some reactions, I'm glad not to be curious enough to have a peek at the pics.
I saw the game live and thought it was a late challenge. The ball in the picture above is clearly there to be won but the fault with Taylor seems to be he's taking up an old adage in football. When referring to one player beating another while dribbling the ball, the saying goes, "Ball or man but never both." I think Taylor was making sure Eduardo wouldn't get past him by sticking him with his trailing leg. I think he intended to nail him even if he didn't expect or intend the outcome. And that's football. He's just playing the game.
Liverpool bundled out of FA Cup by Barnsley. Championship League side Barnsley came to Anfield and did the unthinkable, scoring a last-gasp winner 30 seconds from the end to knock out Liverpool, a team currently 29 places above them. Will Rafa Benitez walk alone after this?

Terrific game. This is why we love the FA Cup. I'm not sure if it was much of a surprise given Liverpool's form, but well done to Barnsley on a deserved result.
Asian Football Confederation joins growing backlash against EPL globalization plan. [Follow-up to an earlier post ...] Reacting to the EPL's proposal to play an extra week of league matches outside of England (beginning January 2011), the AFC head said, "With relation to the overall principle, it is my belief that it is not a good idea to organise domestic leagues in territories other than their own." The US Soccer Federation has already said the same thing. Australia, Japan and Korea FAs also echoed the sentiment. The English FA is grilling EPL chairman Richard Scudamore today on the proposal.

Play the Community Shield overseas, or even the Carling Cup Final.
Now this sounds like a good idea. This way, our not-the-brightest-stars-in-the-sky Americans can say they're going to see the World Championship of English Cups while the rest of us get to attend competitve matches that don't effect the League. This sounds much more workable and since Asia doesn't want to play, N. America and S. America could host the two games alternatively. OK, OK----there's the small matter of Africa, but.....

Gun Massacre Planned at Super Bowl A distraught Tempe man was within sight of the Super Bowl on Sunday with an assault rifle, but a change of heart kept him from his plan to unload 200 rounds of ammunition on the crowd, court records show. "I will test the theory that bullets speak louder than words," Kurt William Havelock wrote in a manifesto sent to the media before the planned massacre. "I will slay your children. I will shed the blood of the innocent,” Havelock wrote after being denied a liquor license for a bar. "No one destroys my dream. No one."

And to think Huck-a-chuck is using this as a campaign platform.
Guys, can you tell me anything about Stoke's reputation within English football? I understand they're a bit of a hit and hope team but I'm just curious about the general feeling of the team---what are their fans like? Are they considered a dirty team? Who's their derby team(s)?
Phil Rawlins, the owner of Stoke, has also started a team here in Austin called the Aztex. They're playing in the Premier Development League of the USL and will go division one next season. The club---ticket sales, marketing, community outreach, etc.---is essentially being run by Phil's wife Kay. We're bringing about 40 people (about 25 kids) to their home opener this Saturday and I was on the phone with Kay yesterday working out the details. You could hear the joy and amazement of being promoted in her voice and she couldn't be a nicer person.
We're really looking forward to having a team to support locally. I'm just curious as to what the parent club is all about.
