Unbeaten Big Brown comes through to win Kentucky Derby. Big Brown backed up his trainer's boasts with an explosive finishing kick and won the Kentucky Derby on Saturday, a commanding victory turned somber by the fatal breakdown of the filly Eight Belles on horse racing's biggest day.

Recapping baseball's weird, wild and wet first month. The cool, cruel month produced a ton of surprising stars, and an equal number of shocking individual disappointments.

Tejada tells team he’s 33, instead of 31. Houston Astros shortstop Miguel Tejada told the team he’s actually 33, two years older than he’s listed in the club’s media guide and other baseball records after being shown a copy of his birth certificate by ESPN.

Maple Bats: One of Baseball's Most Dangerous Weapons About two or three times a game. players swinging bats made of maple wood end up with kindling in their hands while the barrel – blunt and thick on one end, splintered and sharp on the other – flies every which direction. "Someone's going to die at a baseball stadium soon," writes Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports. "Might be a player. Could be an umpire. Possibly even a fan. It almost was a coach."

Kolzig-Less Capitals Ollie the Goalie confirms he will not be returning to the Capitals next season. After posting a so-so record of 25-21-6 with a 2.91 goals-against this season, he was placed in a back up role after the Caps picked up Montreal goalie Cristobal Huet.

The Caps made a great move acquiring Huet. For what, a second round pick. When that deal happened at the deadline, Huet had much better numbers than Kolzig. Sorry to see Kolzig go but it's his time.
(I was really hoping the Blues would've made that deal for Huet, to give Legace a little back up or even as split starters. But no, apparently we don't need a back up goalie.)
Blind bowler, The Hammer, rolls 300 game

Being a bowler, the ball sounds the same no matter how you throw it. The bowling alley would have to be pretty quiet to even hear the ball on the lane to begin with.
dbt, you're probably correct, but I wouldn't doubt that his sense of hearing is a part of it. It's not uncommon for a blind person (or deaf) to rely heavily on their remaining senses. Maybe he heard a squeak in the floor where he starts. Oh, and by the 8th frame or so, I'm sure his lane, and the adjacent lanes were pretty quiet, while watching him bowl.
Either way, it's an amazing story. The two stories linked to in the article are great too. Thanks for posting this, justgary.

Maybe SpoFi can produce some memorabilia (shirts, mugs) along these lines - "I have nominated for the Draft", perhaps.
Or stickers!? I can easily make some to say "Draft Eligible" or "12th round Hopeful".

Ankiel show cased his arm last year, with a few throws from right. I sat in the bleachers at Busch III, and didn't know what was better, his cannon for an arm or his accuracy. When he pitched, he was compared to Koufax. When he returned as a OF, he was mentioned alongside of Babe Ruth. Now with these throws, people have said Clemente. His story is amazing.
Thanks for posting this, justgary.

I'm exaggerating, of course, but it always seems to be a hold-your-breath moment when the pitcher is doing something other than pitching.
Is Rick Ankiel a pitcher?
Answer here. (Choose the Ankiel video. Sorry, I don't know how to link directly to this)

That second throw was caught head high by Glaus. It could've went another 20-30ft.

Thanks for posting this, jojo. I can't say I disagree with any of the nominees. I especially despise Joe Morgan. The summary for him is spot-on. I'd like to see a different set of broadcasters in the ESPN booth, not including Morgan, Miller, or McCarver.
Is it possible that the "Mad Dog" and Ty Cobb are blood-related? (2nd cousins, twice removed?)
And unfortunately, you won't see a Larussa/Pujols fight in a meaningless game against Matty Mo and the Pirates anymore.
PGA Dresses Down John Daly for Golfing Topless A video of John Daly golfing in Branson, Mo., with no shirt or shoes has prompted this response from PGA Commissioner Tim Finchem: "There are certain things about presentation that we must insist on."

This discussion could go some different ways: 1. Does JD have the right to wear`whatever he wants, on his own course? Maybe.
2. Do the PGA have the right to expect it's players maintain a professional lifestyle? Maybe.
I've always like JD, I've always wanted him to succeed, and I've always hoped he would get past all the personal problems he's had to endure over the years. But this is just strange.
I would have zero problemo with playing barefoot, in fact, I attended the US Senior Open at Bellerive C.C. in 2004. It was my first time at such a course and I remarked about how I would play that course w/o shoes, because it was groomed so beautifully.
But the no shirt thing is just disgusting. By the way, he's also wearing jeans, which here in STL, is another thing shined down upon at the majority of public courses.
I'm about out of sympathy and hope for JD.

Virginia Tech beats Team USA. Behind a no-hitter by the starting pitcher, Virginia Tech defeats a team that has arrguably the best hitting core in the history of organized softball.

I was watching the game too, and the announcers had mentioned how the US team usually doesn't scrimmage against college clubs because the distance from the mound was different.
Both the Olympics Rules and the NCAA rules(PDF) have the distance set at 43ft.
But either way, an incredible win. VT pitcher Angela Tincher's stats are ridiculous: 0.49ERA, 282K's in 138.1 IP. More than 2 K's per inning. Then a no, no to the US team. She should get a ticket to Beijing as well.
It's been 10 years?!
That's right, 10 years since Kerry Wood tied the major league record for strikeouts in a 9-inning game.
You can watch the video highlights of the 20 strikeouts here.

Wow. Thanks, grum! The game with the 20 was ridiculous.
There's a lot of talk now about why he's so different than he was. Arm? Shoulder? Mental? 30+ pound weight loss? Age?
In that video, there were a few pitches that he knew were strikes before they made it to the catcher's mitt. It seemed like he threw a strike, then turned back to the mound waiting to throw the next strike. He didn't even need to see what the batter was doing. Amazing.
I think that's what he's missing. That 20 year old invincible confidence, with a swagger.
I can't even imagine major league baseball using the god awful aluminum bat.
Metal bats are being questioned regarding their safety too. Some youth and high-school leagues are banning them here in St. Louis. There will not be metal bats in the MLB.
Yep, the wood bats absorb more of the impact than a metal bat does. So, imagine an MLB player hitting a ball 15% harder.
Frankly, I'm surprised that the NCAA still uses aluminum bats.
Me too, NoMich. The NCAA players are men, and some can hit the ball just as hard or harder than an MLB player.
(As a kid, we used to crank golf balls down the block with a metal bat. Man, were we stupid.)
The injuries noted in the article surprised me. I hadn't heard about any of them. But there was story after story about the coach getting hit with a ball. I'm beginning to appreciate my nosebleed seats more and more.
