Madden 2007 John Maddens latest version of Madden 2007 is sure to be the best yet. But have you ever wondered how the gamemakers come up with the player ratings? A very interesting article about the complex rating system of Madden 07.

The Red Sox Worst Nightmare David Ortiz of the Red Sox is out indefinately due to an irregular heart beat. Are Bostons hopes of getting into the playoffs officially over? (They're already 7 games behind the Yankees.)

Ground Breaking begins on the house that George built No... not that George. George Steinbrener and various baseball offcials broke ground on the new Yankee Stadium. Any thoughts about the situation?

Is the NFL Preseason too long? Many people (and players) complain about the length of the Preseason. Is it too long? Should the schedule be shortened, or is it good for teams to give the backups playing time?

It's time to pitch the DH. The most astonishing occurrence in the first six weeks of the baseball season — other than the decline of my World Series favorites, the Seattle Mariners, who played like the Seattle Pilots — was that the National League outscored the American League.

D'Antoni accepts Knicks' offer Mike D'Antoni is set to become coach of the New York Knicks, bringing his entertaining offensive style from the Phoenix Suns to a team coming off one of the worst seasons in its history. Can he make the Knicks contenders again?
posted to Basketball at 4:48 PM CDT
As a big Knicks fan, any name besides Thomas' is a big relief. With that said, i'm not sure D'Antoni has what the Knicks need. We all know they can score if they need to, but they cannot defend if they have to. I think the Knicks can become contenders pretty easily. They are in the Eastern conference, and were relatively close to the playoffs in the 1st half. Give them 2-3 years, most likely 3 years. They will have a good draft pick this year, and have lots of young talent. Wait for some contracts to finish, and you're looking at a legit contender.
With that said, Avery Johnson would have been my first choice- I think he brings the style that the Knicks really need.

Makes me think much less of the 214 I bowled Saturday... good for him to pull off such a feat. I look forward to seeing if he can still bowl at that level at age 90.
Who is Antonio Cromartie? Cromartie may be best known as the Chargers quaterback who led the league in interceptions last year and owns the league record for longest scoring play with a 109 yard return. But not many people know about the other aspects of Cromartie's life, life changing instances such as life-threatening illnesses, having his mom kidnapped at gunpoint, and a scary car accident.

On the cover of sporting news Cromartie looks jacked.. at first I thought it was a UFC fighter or something.. and cjets, I really doubt he'll realize how important that is. Or if he does, I would bet he never acts upon it. But great story nonetheless.
Adam "Pacman" Jones is accused of sucker-punching a female attorney in a northwest Atlanta strip-club.
posted to Football at 3:25 PM CDT
Right now these are only allegations, but no matter how this turns out, by many he's gonna be percieved as guilty.
Pacman is like OJ.. guilty until proven innocent. Adam should know better than to go near any skin joint.. but then again it is Adam Jones.
Double Amputee Can't Run in Beijing Olympics Oscar Pistorius, a South African sprinter dubbed the "blade runner" because he runs on prosthetics, has been barred from this year's Summer Games. "An athlete using this prosthetic blade has a demonstrable mechanical advantage (more than 30 percent) when compared to someone not using the blade," the International Association of Athletics Federations ruled. A May 2007 New York Times profile asked the question, "Is he disabled or too-abled?" A YouTube video shows Pistorius competing at the Golden Gala in Rome last year, his first race against "able-bodied" sprinters.

Terrible news for Oscar, a guy who has fought so hard for what now seems like very little. I agree with Chico though, its understandable why such a decision would be made. Otherwise you may see runners/athletes intentionally amputing themselves for better times, performance, etc. After all, athletes used steroids and other harmful substances to try and get better physically, so whos to say whats what anymore?

Well, my argument was simply that people would go to great lengths in order to win.. not myself personally, or 99% of us, but that was my interpretation of the ruling. (Besides the fact they thought it was an unfair advantage) Maybe it seems a little extreme, or unlikely, but it could happen. I think chico put it in much better terms than myself.
Giants down Cowboys 21-17: in the day's second upset, the fifth-seeded Giants defeated the top-seed Cowboys in Dallas.
posted to Football at 7:33 PM CDT
The reason that Dallas lost was because Marion Barber hurt his leg (right or left hamstring) on one of the last plays of the second quarter and Dallas failed to adapt.
In my opinion, the Cowboys lost because they started Barber over Jones. They wanted to establish momentum early and get the crowd on their side, which worked well. However, this left them without a closing punch in the 2nd half, one which they've been able to bank on all season. Barber was getting hammered (and hammering the defense) during the entire 1st half. They handed the 2ns half to Jones, which for the most part was inconsistent. The same goes for the Giants and Jacobs. Bradshaw has been being used more and more in the 2nd half to take advantage of the tired out D's, and also to give Jacobs an occasional breather. As for T.O, I think it was obvious he wasn't at 100%, even early on in the game. (He failed to catch some easy passes)... easy for T.O anyway. Romo became flustered late in the game, and his inexperience shined through. Dallas played a sloppy game, which often times is the difference. Overall, I feel the Giants played excellent on D- especially in the secondary. McQuarters stepped up big fro the 2nd week in a row, and the Giants will bring a big wave of momentum with them to Green Bay.

Speaking of the Aikman bias, anyone listen to WFAN radio? I was throughouly dissapointed in how one-sided they were. Every time the Boys scored or made a play the guys went nuts. When the Giants scored, you barely knew what happened. I expected more for a NY based station.
Chargers Beat Colts, 28-24, and move on to face the Patriots next week.
posted to Football at 3:27 PM CDT
P.S- For that to happen San Diego has to beat the unbeaten New England without LT or Gates. And who knows if Rivers will even play? Kinda doubt that would happen, but if it did I think that the Giants would win. Eli has looked impressive throughout the last few weeks.
Heat awarded do-over against Hawks The teams must replay the last 51.9 seconds due to a scoring error on number of fouls against Shaq.
posted to Basketball at 5:06 PM CDT
Yea, with only 82 games to play in a season this 52 seconds should be replayed. Come this post season we'll all look back on this as the pivotal point in the season.
Ya, because ya know these teams will be fighting for the playoffs... I think it's rediculous and completely bizzare. I wonder how many guys lost their jobs over this one.. :p
Nick Swisher Traded from A's to White Sox The Oakland As have traded Nick Swisher to the Chicago White Sox for minor leaguers Gio Gonzalez, Fautino De Los Santos and outfielder Ryan Sweeney, closing the book on the Moneyball draft of 2002. "Basically, Moneyball happened, and it didn't change the course of the A's," local sportswriter Tim Kawakami blogs. "Nice story. Good book. Not a lot of history made by those seven players."

Personally, I think that Beane is a very smart GM, not a genius, but a capable guy who knows how to work with what he's got. Tim didn't seem to really be very high on the players Beane has drafted.. and the article seems to skip around a bit on the quality the A's have brought in throughout the years. However yerfatma, I would think that the 3 in 7 ratio isnt bad, especially when you consider they recieved 3 players for Swisher. Another 4 prospects for Haren. If 3 players could end up making significant contributions, Beane would consider the mover successful (So I think anyway). Prospects are never guaranteed, but I think that the gamble is worth the risk seeing as the A's have a ways to go before they can be considered legit contenders. My interpretation of Beanes strategy is to score as many prime prospects as possible, hoping that the majoprity of them will turn into the Damon's, Giambi's, etc. One day the A's will have an impressive array of young studs, which hopefully will lead to some winning.
Chris Bosh really wants to be an All Star.
posted to Basketball at 9:47 AM CDT
Im not sure that Bosh could do anything to better his chances of making the team. His play speaks for itself this year, and I feel the video was made as more of a joke rather than a serious attempt to get votes. I don't feel the video would skew the results enough to truly make a difference, especially since he insulted many voters by his butchered cowboy accent. Anyway, good luck to him.
posted at 4:58 PM CDT on January 3
If I were a southerner, I would be insulted by a guy trying to be some cowboy. I realize he's from Texas, yes, but at times his tone seems more insulting than comedic for some audiences. I am just pointing out that he could have lost some potential votes thru the whole accent thing. It was inconsistent and at times rude. (Like the whole Bubba thing with the teeth missing.) Your opinion may differ greatly from someone elses. However people take it, I find the skit quite funny- but it may not make such a huge difference in terms of making the team.
Dodgers add Andruw Jones Free-agent center fielder agrees to two-year deal worth $36.2 million, filling a big need in the middle of the order.
posted to Baseball at 3:07 AM CDT
Good point yerfatma, if Andruw can put up the numbers he used to, he could easily cash-in mega bucks. While I agree that this was the right deal, im a little suprised that the Dodgers didn't push for Torrii Hunter or Miguel Cabrera. Either way, things in LA are beginning to look brighter after this offseason.
I don't see why this is such a big issue. I personally feel that the AL shouldn't have a DH. Any change would due really, but both leagues should have the same policy. I think it's apparent that AL pitching has gotten much better. Young guys are now flourishing (at least in some teams), which is a key factor. DH has always been a hard position to fill, even though it's the easiest to do. A perfect example is Jason Giambi. He hates DHing, and his hitting stats reflect that. The difference was so dramatic that the Yankees have him playing first. (He's always been a horrible fielder) Sitting around on the bench makes it hard to stay loose, especially at the professional level.
On the contrary, most pitchers hate hitting. They are endangering themselves on the plate, and on the bases. Of course this is true with all players, but most players are professional hitters, and practice hitting everyday. The lack of practice they take hitting and running the bases makes them more susceptible to injuries. (And we know how frail the majority of them are) While they could practice hitting, the benefits over a couple of AB's per game is most likely not worth it from a teams standpoint.
Lets hope the issue is addressed so its fair to both leagues.
