Sports Bio

A life-long Ipswich Town fan, I'm used to dim and distant triumphs, backed up with more recent disappointment. So you'll not be surprised to hear I follow the Dolphins, (0-2 in Superbowls in my time).

For a trivial aside, I have a career record of one catch for nine yards from future Hall of Fame Quarterbacks, when Dan Marino visited the UK in 1986.

He looked quite useful.

Substitute  England won't be at Euro 2008, but neither will Frenchman Vikash Dhorasoo. Despite playing in every qualification match for the 2006 World Cup, Dhorasoo got just 16 minutes on the field during the tournament and retired from international football following France's defeat in the final. A year later he was gone from the game altogether.

Tomorrow the film Dhorasoo shot at the 06 World Cup, "Substitute" [Youtube] (warning: contains French), is released in the UK allowing you to watch a man fall out of love with football.

First it was sad, then suspiscious, then murder. Now, almost three months to the day after Pakistani Cricket team Coach Bob Woolmer was found unconscious in his hotel room, the Jamaican police confirm his death was from natural causes.

Astros' Shawn Chacon Suspended After Fight with GM Houston Astros pitcher Shawn Chacon has been suspended after a physical altercation with general manager Ed Wade in the team's dining room. "He started yelling and cussing," said Chacon, recently demoted to the bullpen. "... I grabbed him by the neck and threw him to the ground. I jumped on top of him because at that point I wanted to beat his [butt]." Team owner Drayton McLane said Chacon will never pitch for the team again: "You can't defy authority."

GEEZ, not many Ex-military people here I guess! LOL!

If you're in the military, and you punch out your boss, do you get a free pass? LOL!

It's possible I'm the one reading it wrong, but I think Vol was suggesting that military people have their "boss" shouting at them frequently without resorting to a physical response.

The Decline of Commentary in cricket, but probably applicable to all broadcast sports. Osman Samiuddin takes ex-players to task. A well-considered rant.

Maybe I'm odd man out here, but I really enjoy the BBC's Test Match Special radio commentary. The matey-style banter between the crew works well and I'll often put it on in the background while I'm working. I also often put the cricket on the tv with the sound down and listen to TMS instead of the tv commentators.

I'm an England fan and I'm enjoying the tournament immensely because they're not there.

For once I'm not obligated to half-heartedly cheer on a collection of inept grafters who play ugly football and hope they win. I can celebrate the performances and freedom of the Dutch so far, (losing control of a game? Don't bring on a defender, bring on two more attackers!), without any worry that we might run into them later in the tournament.

I can enjoy watching the French and the Italians sweat, because they know the result of their game is irrelevant if Romania beat what's sure to be a Netherlands team with more reserves on the field on matchday three, because I have no worries about England's own struggles.

Anyone who remembers how the Italians went out at Euro 04 and how they reacted to it will be struggling to stiffle a giggle or two.

I'm having fun with '08 so far.

Scolari is new Chelsea coach, effective July 1. Looks like Avram Grant was a stopgap until they found a big name. Now they've found one in the current Portugal coach (who also won something called the World Cup as Brazil's coach in 2002), who's doing quite well at the Euro 2008 championship right now.

This would be the same Phil Scolari who turned down the England job two years ago, because he wouldn't talk about job offers while still in charge of Portugal.

errr...

Having said which, given a choice between England and Chelsea, I'd probably come to the same decision as Big Phil.

"He also cited the unbearable English press as a reason for not taking the England job. Last I noticed, they're still here and still unbearable."

Luckily, those guys don't cover Chelsea's games.

Robert Kubica wins the Canadian Grand Prix. Robert Kubica becomes the first Polish driver to win a Grand Prix, scoring BMW's first ever victory in the process. His teammate Nick Heidfeld made it a BMW 1-2 after Lewis Hamilton ended his and Kimi Raikkonen's race in a bonehead incident in the pitlane. A year ago, Kubica was lucky to leave Montreal with his life. This year he leaves it leading the drivers championship by four points. What a difference a year makes.

Whitmarsh has confirmed he told Hamilton the red light was on and Hamilton has apologised to Raikkonen for the error and apparently accepted the fact that he'll be penalised as Magny Cours. Even the British press are going to struggle to blame someone else for that. (Not that they normally let facts obstruct their back pages.)

I'm happy to put it down to some karma after the way Kimi killed Force India's chance at their first ever points at Monaco two weeks ago.

2k, if you have a decent net connection and a monitor you don't mind doubling for a tv, you could try myp2p.

You might have to download sopcast, (although most programs are available on media player), but they have a large range of live feeds for almost all major sporting events.

Just pick "live sports" from the top and then the sport of your choice. You can click "software" and then download sopcast from the second line of the blue checkerboard section.

I see there's an exciting opportunity tonight to watch the key friendly between Afghanistan and Bangladesh.

Kimbo Slice is Going Primetime A sport that was once derided as "human cockfighting" and banned in most U.S. states is airing live on CBS Saturday night. Mixed Martial Arts fighter Kimbo Slice will face James "The Colossus" Thompson in the first live bout on one of the big four networks, a sign the brutal sport has gone mainstream. "Anyone who thinks CBS will not come out of this with some kind of black eye is fooling themselves," says sports consultant Marc Ganis.

"3. The CBS announcing crew’s endless hyperbole reaching its pinnacle when one of them compared Kimbo to Tiger Woods.

This would be applicable if Tiger had gained fame hitting trick shots in putt putt and then was invited to a second rate club championship which CBS was conned into televising. He then shot a final round 124, after which he was declared the winner anyway.
"

This, (from YYM's link) is a pretty good summation of the fight. Slice took double-figure elbows to the head, undefended, in the second round and not only was the fight not stopped but, as also mentioned in the article, one judge even scored that round for Slice.

If some of MMA's rise in popularity really does come from fans tired of boxing's shady practises, then it's probably not a good idea to look like you're copying them.

Meanwhile, the day after Slice's fight there was a good quality main event in WEC between Urijah Faber and Jens Pulver, which you can see here.

My scoring of the round depends on how many times a fighter gets hit.

If the round is close then I might look at who landed the better shots, but not the other way around, otherwise how many "weak" elbows counteracts one strong punch? Three? Five? Ten?

Round 2

Kimbo lands the bigger punches, but the second set of punches comes only when Thompson is stood up from side control and when Kimbo is dropped with the double-leg he's just laying there, not even moving his legs and conservatively I count at least 60 unanswered shots, be they punches, hammerfists or elbows.

Weak or not, if that round gets scored for Slice then Thompson would have had to have knocked him out to get a draw.

Comment icon posted at 8:04 AM CDT on June 3

err, that's not supposed to be read as terse as it sounds. Just that it's a sport - if someone lands 10 jabs and the other guy lands 4 crosses, then you have to give to the jabs, even if they're weak, because they're still scoring punches.

If the number of punches landed is close, then I'd look at other things, like punch strength and quality, but if you lose a punch count by 80ish to 20ish, then I'm not going to care if you're hitting the guy with a chair, you still lose the round.

And that's not even taking into account Kimbo being dropped twice and pinned and offering no defence and showing no technical idea of how to escape.

Comment icon posted at 8:20 AM CDT on June 3

Slice definitely has Thompson in trouble - you're right - but the first time he has no answer for a groggy guy working the single-leg and then after the ref stands them up from Thompson being in side-control, (baffling), Slice rattles Thompson again, then suffers a double-leg takedown.

After the double leg, Slice takes somewhere in the region of sixty unanswered strikes. You can argue that they're weak and the last few certainly are, (and I'd guess the reason is that Thompson is shattered from throwing unabated offence at Slice for such an extended period), but they still connect, so they should still count.

When they cut to the wider shot you can see that Slice isn't even moving his hips - his only defence is to raise his free hand to try to obstruct the blows.

I can't help the feeling that if Slice had been on top, throwing even weak and sloppy elbows, the fight would have been stopped. That a judge managed to score the round for Slice really astonished me.
