Brett Favre Starts 271st Straight Game

But, when he was hurt last year should he have cut the streak short, allowed the Jets to move on then, and had surgery on his arm at that time? Did he place the streak above the right thing for the team there? Not sure he did, just throwing it out there. The Jets probably weren't going anywhere anyway.

Native Americans Ask Supreme Court to Sack Redskins Trademark

I don't like seeing people dress as "Indians" for a football game. I don't like seeing people do the "tomahawk chop" and "imitate" Indian people. When I watch the 1991 world series replays it really bugs me to see all the dumb people in Atlanta doing that chop stuff and mocking Indian people (glad the Twins won). Do most people think the toothy-big-nosed-smiling "Chief Wahoo" Cleveland Indians logo is a good depiction of Indians? Probably not. The name of the team is where those things all come from. Its not separate.

I just don't see how it is a good thing to name a team after a race of people's skin color, even if that is where it comes from (which it seems like that is what you are arguing). I wouldn't support going to a game in blackface, why should we accept this type of fandom and usage of a race for a team name.

It won't help people on the reservations to change the name, but it doesn't honor them either to use their race as a stereotype, caricature, or punchline. Maybe I can't convince bdaddy of any of that, and so be it. I just have a real hard time understanding his support of it (or it seems his opposition to any change really rather than supporting it).

I also went to school at the University of North Dakota where this debate or argument takes place on a local basis.

Yeah, 768 is not enough of a sample to draw the conclusion that the majority of Native Americans are OK with the term redskins.

Not even enough for many Reservation's populations. Not around here anyway. Just Red Lake, White Earth, and Leech Lake in Minnesota have around 40,000 enrolled members. That is just three reservations here.

where did they pull their sample from?

Ex-players to picket HOF

I don't get the coal miner comparison. Its actually pretty inaccurate because they have had to do special compensation to them in certain circumstances of disability and injury: "The Black Lung Benefits Act (BLBA) provides monthly payments and medical benefits to coal miners totally disabled from pneumoconiosis (black lung disease) arising from employment in or around the nation's coal mines. This Act also provides monthly benefits to a miner's dependent survivors if pneumoconiosis caused or hastened the miner's death. The Division of Coal Mine Workers' Compensation (DCMWC), within the U.S. Department of Labor Employment Standards Administration's Office of Workers' Compensation Programs (OWCP), adjudicates and processes claims filed by coal miners and their survivors under the BLBA." Now, I don't know what compensation runs (as to amount) in these cases and its not a pension but special compensatory action for dead and disabled people that got that way because of their work. In the NFL circumstance (not the coal miner one) are we talking just pensions for everyone or specific problems of severely fucked up people, like Mike Webster, who got that way because of their work? How many NFL players are all fucked up because of their playing and come before that multi-millionaire era? I know that in the article Ditka seems especially pissed about the Webster example and how Webster's case was handled.

One Toke Over The Line, Ron Mexico...

Hello ron mexico! Your Ron Mexico name, the ultimate disguise, is Michael Vick. Nice, so at least one name on there is not a place-based alias...not much fun if your real name is Ron Mexico though (I think Rcade linked to this guy in the original Ron Mexico thread): UC player caught in name game Craig Muder Staff By CRAIG MUDER Observer-Dispatch UTICA - Ron Mexico has been dragged into the national spotlight. Fortunately for the former Utica College hockey player, none of this is his fault. Unfortunately - because the case involves National Football League star Michael Vick - Mexico himself has become national news. Vick, the Atlanta Falcons' quarterback, is being sued by an alleged former girlfriend who claims he knowingly gave her genital herpes in 2003. The lawsuit, filed in the state court of Gwinnett County, Georgia, and posted on thesmokinggun.com, alleges that Vick has used the name "Ron Mexico" as an alias "for the purposes of herpes testing and/or treatment." Soon after the lawsuit was published, radio stations from across the country began calling the real Ron Mexico in Utica. "They did a `Google' search and Ron Mexico came up playing hockey for Utica College," said Mexico, a senior from Big Rapids, Mich. "Me and my dad are the only Ron Mexicos in the country, I think. "I found out two or three days ago when my buddy from Michigan told me he heard it on the radio. I thought he was just pulling my leg, but I got a call from a Los Angeles radio station yesterday." Mexico has not been served with any legal documents, and has never met Vick. But on the heels of UC's run in the ECAC Playoffs in March, Mexico's brush with Vick has brought even more publicity to the Pioneers' hockey program. "What's been great is on the air they've been introducing him as Utica College hockey player Ron Mexico," said UC coach Gary Heenan. "I had radio stations from Atlanta, L.A. and Detroit calling me to get Ron's number." Mexico, who appeared in 14 games for the Pioneers' this year, is one of 13 seniors who helped turn UC from a brand new program in 2001 to a national power in 2005. And when Mexico graduates this spring, his hockey legacy will long be remembered in Utica. His name, however, is now linked to Michael Vick. "I have no idea how he got it, but I hope this doesn't hurt me," joked Mexico. "You know what my major is? I'm going into hospital administration."

From an article discussing reasons for his decline: "Exposed grip. Unlike two-handed pitchers, Abbott cannot hide grip inside his glove during his windup. His grip is exposed to a first base coach or third, base coach. Pitches he might throw to tail away from righthanded hitters--split-finger fastball, knuckle curve, screwball, sinker--require conspicuous grips. Coaches may tip off Abbott's pitches to hitters." UND to sue NCAA over it's name

The Star Tribune article included this paragraph: At the suggestion of a Dakota spiritual elder who visited the campus, UND changed plans to paint a Sioux logo on an athletic court floor, Kupchella said, and stopped calling its concession-stand hot dogs "Siouxper dogs." That's right, in the middle of this controversy over the use of the name for the team itself they thought it was a smart idea to market the hot dogs at the games as "Siouxper Dogs" and the bottled water as "HsiouxO". These guys are not fucking geniuses. Someone a little smarter could have reached out to the tribes sooner, gotten them on board, squashed this shit at that point, and avoided the shitstorm. Instead things end up where they are today.

UND to sue NCAA over it's name

Second, I grew up in a southern Minnesota town, yes I'm a proud Golden Gopher alumni! In the 1860's the town had numerous villagers killed, raped, etc. by the neighboring Sioux. It was after the Sioux uprising that the Indians were put on reservations. I know, that sounds horrible. Of course, the alternative would have been to treat them like they always treated their enemies...kill every last one of them. In this world, time and time again, the societies that were not able to advance out of the stone age were defeated. I know its OT, but that is a pretty strange way of putting events like the mass hanging at Mankato, where 38 Sioux were hanged at once. Nothing like conducting nearly 400 trials in 6 weeks right? Many were guilty and many were not. Besides, if you read a book like Over the Earth I Come you get the sense that the Sioux and the white settlers were really the victims of incompetence by the U.S. government. With its attention on the civil war type situations going down, it purchased the land from the Sioux, moved the white folks in, and then did not pay for it (I'm just going from memory here) on time because of being focused on the events of the civil war. The Sioux get starved out and are told to eat the grass by the less friendly of the white traders, like Andrew Myrick. That is how atrocities happen on both sides, shit like that adding up to an explosive situation. Also, you would be mistaken to generalize regarding the Sioux Indians all participating in a war on farmers and settlers. Many saw no honor in that, staying out of it, and others actually saved the lives of white settlers. the Fighting Sioux mascot is a very complementary tribute to the Sioux, it is not something that people laugh at You mean like when the NDSU Bison fans were their Sioux suck shirts, or even the ones (which I haven't seen in awhile) that have a depiction of an Indian sucking a bison's cock? Who would be offended by something like that?

UND to sue NCAA over it's name

When they originally named the team the Fighting Sioux Actually the team name used to be the University of North Dakota Flickertails which apparently is a ground squirrel but sounded a little bit to weak for them I suppose. Or they felt that there were too many rodent names, with the University of Minnesota being the Golden Gophers and all. So, in about 1930 they went and changed it to University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux. Although the name "Flickertails" was discarded faster than used shitpaper, good luck trying to get them to change anything now.

UND to sue NCAA over it's name

An NCAA executive committee "decided, more or less by fiat, decided that some institutions were going to be subject to this rule, and some institutions, for reasons that are not understandable, were exempted," Stenehjem said. How did I know this shit would be on here today? Look, I went to school there and everything, but all they had to do was bring the tribes on board and they could have gotten around it like Florida State, Central Michigan, etc. They did not do that though and they fucked themselves. I don't even think one tribe signed off on that shit or supported it. (in one of the articles it mentions that an official from Standing Rock backed the use of the nickname, but I haven't heard that before...) The Ralph Engelstad era did them no favors either (other than the sweet hockey arena). The Board of Education in ND based its decisions purely on what a jerkoff millionaire with a crush on Hitler wanted them to do. He wants the nickname, they want the nickname. Then they are surprised when the tribes tell them to go fuck themselves. Its not a real huge surprise that the Board of Higher Education backed the lawsuit unanimously, that kind of shit is much more important to them than any real education issues. As a kind of extra fuck you to everybody that opposed Engelstad, the arena has Indian head logos everywhere on the floor, the walls, etc. So he brought that shit on himself (even though he is now fucking dead when all of this is happening). The courts are jammed with stupid people complaining/suing about something. You mean like the fucking attorney general of ND? Because that is who is going to be filing the lawsuit. I'm sure that this is the most pressing law enforcement issue in ND and that they couldn't get private counsel to handle it, right? Basically it boils down to this: "or won appeals after local tribes came to their defense" No one is really coming to their defense or backing them on it would be my guess. That lack of support was something they should have thought about when they were doing all that bullshit. When you basically tell the tribes "you are being honored whether you think so or not and we won't ever stop" then what do you expect? Personally, I always hated Engelstad but did not necessarily mind the logo. They could have gotten a Sioux artist to design it and that might have helped, rather than a Chippewa one . That would mean actually understanding the difference between the two and I'm not sure they could handle that. I understand that they are saying the process was not on the level, and maybe that is correct, as far as their suit goes. Who would know more about using a flawed process to reach a decision than the ND Board of Higher Education, after all. I have always felt that the most offensive one was Chief Illiniwek because its a fucking mascot. At least UND does not have some shit like that going on. (now I've gone on too long and shouldn't write anything for about a month).

Judge tosses boat-party charges against Culpepper

I think the Culpepper probable cause hearing, from what I have heard (in the Earl Gray interviews and so forth), went down like this: The defense presented testimony of Culpepper, and at least one other witness, that he was not involved in the conduct alleged in the complaint. The prosecution then, rather than present its own witnesses and testimony (maybe they didn't have any to present) rested on the disclosures in the file. At that point the Judge basically has to decide whether that is enough, or "given the facts disclosed by the record, is it fair and reasonable to require the defendant to stand trial." Where the defendant produces exonerating testimony/evidence, the Judge can still rule in favor of the prosecution if the Judge finds that the prosecution "possesses substantial evidence that will be admissible at trial and that would justify denial of a motion for a directed verdict of acquittal." Lazy prosecution or nothing there? Maybe both (also Earl Gray, despite the teabag name, is a very good defense attorney). Either way, Culpepper is cleared because the Judge found that there was insufficient evidence for him to even have to stand trial for the charge(s). In case anyone was wondering about all of that...probably not.
