Raptors Trade for Rose: The Raptors and Bulls have apparently completed their long talked-about deal. David Aldrige of ESPN is reporting that the deal consists of Jalen Rose, Lonny Baxter and Donyell Marshall for Antonio Davis, Jerome Williams, and Chris Jeffries.

Whoopee! - Pity to see JYD going down though - He's a great Raptor. What's the opinion on Baxter? Sleepy-eyed Chris Jefferies may eventually turn into a decent player.

not JYD! sigh. well, i guess he may have been a fan fave but the whole bottom line of his expensive contract probably put him in the mix?

JYD is OVERRATED!! This is a great trade for the Raptors if Jalen will play D for Kevin O'Neill, if they use him at point some to keep Palacio off the floor, if Baxter can rebound from the 4-spot and/or if they can then deal MoPete for a banger. That's a lot of ifs, but Grunwald may have just saved himself from the chopping block with this one.

Jalen's contract is the killer here. His contract goes a year longer than Antonio's, which means it extends into the 2006-07 season which is also the final year in Vince Carter's and Chris Bosh's contract. I was looking forward to the off-season before 2006-07 when the Raptors could go after a big-name free agent to make a championship run (when Bosh has matured and Vince is in his prime) and convince the two stars to re-sign. If Jalen is still a Raptor then...no star free agent and possibly no Vince and no Bosh if the Raptors continue their mediocrity. I hope Glen Grunwald knows what he's doing.

Baffling, just baffling...

I was looking forward to the off-season before 2006-07... Now that's dedication.

dusted: I run the best damn Raptors fan site on the Web and I spend up to 2 hours a day updating it and moderating the forums. You're damn right I'm dedicated! The Raptors needed scoring, but I would have preferred Glen to hold out for a scoring threat whose contract didn't surpass the GDP of most industrialized nations. On the bright side, maybe the arrival of Rose and Marshall will put an end to the 60-point games that have been all too common for the Raptors. I've had a hernia operation that was more enjoyable than some Raptors games this season.

Scott Carefoot: Great site, and (since VC is on my fantasy team), GO RAPTORS!

The Raptors may have given up too much in this trade. Rose, and Marshall will score. But will they rebound? AD and JYD were averaging upwards of 18 rpg. The Raps obviously have a lot of faith in Bosh's ability to hit the boards. When all is said and done, Lonny Baxter may be the surprise bonus in this trade ( a la Flip Murray).

lilnemo -> The Raps definitely didn't give up too much; most analyses dictate that the Raptors won the Talent portion of the trade (with the Bulls getting the Salary nod). While rebounding and post defence will pose major problems, Antonio Davis wanted nothing to do with Toronto and the Raptors need scoring *now*. Scott -> I don't think GG had the option of holding out for a better deal. As you no doubt know, in today's NBA you generally need to take on a big contract if you give one up... and GG's back was up against the wall--Davis was moping his way out of town while the Raptors scored fewer points than any team in the history of the NBA. Combine those factors with the Raptors losing 2000 season tickets last year, and all of a sudden you have a situation that unfortunately can't wait for 2006-2007 to sign a player.

Agreed lew. The Raps obviously have a lot of faith in Bosh's ability to hit the boards. Umm, yikes. I don't think so. Now what can the Raps package together (MoPete, etc.) to trade for a banger to complement Bosh, in case Baxter doesn't work out? That is, who is out there that might fit the bill? Anybody want to put on the Grunwald thinking cap?

Maybe Glen will resurrect the MoPete to NY for Kurt Thomas, or Othella Harrington deal.

If they can rid themselves of MoPete and Alvin Wiliams they will - for a banger or a PG, I could see it happening. Please no Othella.

I've been to Toronto on several occasions and have always been stunned by the utter lack of attention paid to the Raptors. Keep the faith, brother ... I'm buying my gf's two-year-old a VC jersey for Xmas. :)

wfrazerjr: Thanks, consider the faith kept. And get the new red Raptors away jersey for the child. It's hype!
