Top Rangers' Draft Pick Dies During Game Alexei Cherepanov, 19, the first-round pick of the New York Rangers in 2007 and one of the top prospects in the franchise, died today after collapsing on the bench during a game in Chekhov, Russia. The cause of death was cardiac arrest. "To be so young and put up the kind of numbers he was putting up at the top level in Russia was just amazing," said his agent Jay Grossman. “He was on track to being a star."
