Time to blow up the Rockets 1997, 0-6, two 2-0 series leads... Yes Houston fans, Houston's postseason series drought continues to 11 years, they have blown TWO series in the past THREE years when holding a 2-0 advantage AND our beloved savior, the one where we sent our starting backcourt away for is now 0 for 6 in the postseason. Serious things are going on in Houston this offseason, and folks, this could be a different team next year.

Suspensions Handed Out In lieu of the largest mayham since the Palace in 2004, 6 players got suspended for their roles in an intense fight. Carmelo Anthony got harshest penalty, and will serve 15 games for his actions.

A run for the ages Ten years ago, Bill Clinton was President of the US, cell phones were in their early stages of being discussed, Ken Caminiti was having an MVP season and a little known reliever for the New York Yankees was undergoing his tutalage to become one of the greatest closers EVER. A salute to Mariano Rivera, perhaps one of the best at his craft ever.

Big Papi backs Bonds, doesn't know if he took steroids Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz says he thinks people should give Barry Bonds credit in his chase for Babe Ruth's record. Ortiz also said he couldn't be sure if he'd ever taken steroids or not.

Well...why don't we just find someone else to be Commissioner? Bud Selig doesn't have the world's best track record, and he's often been the butt of a lot of good jokes that I've heard.
Yes, and while there is suspicion about Bonds and his use of steroids, there's no hard evidence against him. While he may be a creep, he is still (in the eyes of the law) an innocent creep. So as Baseball fans, while we may hate the fact that he is closing in on the record, we need to respect him as a player and respect his chase for one of the most prestigeous records in all of sports, because he could be innocent (even though he did say he took some stuff 'unknowingly')
Plus it doesn't hurt to have Bonds on your fantasy baseball team...where arrogance and asshole-ness don't count against you...

Remember, Houston only had 1 "true" point guard in their actual rotation (and I'm really iffy on calling Rafer Alston a "true point guard" in the first place)...yet the truth be told, how many legit PG's are out there who can penetrate, hit 3's and defend on a regular basis? Maybe 5 or 6 in the entire league. Thus you look for people who can compliment stars.
Yao, T-Mac and Shane Battier are Houston's three players who will be off limits (as far as a trade is concerned) if this team wants to maintain the same core.
Steve Blake, you just became the hottest commodity this offseason for about 4-5 teams because you're probably the best option amongst all the PGs on the market...

how about the Rockets and Mavericks trading with one another to fix each others problems...yeah...right, like division rivals would do that (hey, Dallas and the Philly did trade football picks)...
Turner to coach Bolts. The man won two Superbowl rings as the O Coordinator in Dallas. However, he has a combined record of 58-82-1 as a head coach in Washington and Oakland. All of the people interviewed by the Chargers (to my knowledge) had at least one Superbowl ring as a player or coach. Did they pick the right one?

Well...Ron Rivera is out of a job now, so I wouldn't put it behind the Bolts to go grab Rivera and put him in "Head Coach Training" now...
Bolts zap Schottenheimer. It was inevitable. I thought it would happen sooner. With the level of talent on that team, there's no longer an excuse not to win it all. But did they wait too long? Are all the best candidates for the job already taken?

Wow...well, I can see this after they lost like 1/2 their staff...Marty should probably take a year off and see what happens in the coaching market. He will need a break from coaching I bet. The right job will have to be what will snag him.
That goes to tell you that playoffs are all that matter (Playoffs? I just hope we can win a game!)
Chargers flushed, Peyton vs. Brady again Plus, LT got in a fight at the end of the tight game, it apparently had something to do with Shawne Merriman.
posted to Football at 7:49 PM CDT
very good points all of you guys...now some clarifications...
1.) LT got into a fight with several of the New England Patriots after the game because these individuals were celebrating on the center logo by mocking Shawne Merriman's dance. LT was defending his teammate, and yes, while I disagree with his actions, I'm more upset with the Patriot players. They SHOULD know better than that to act that way, let alone after a win. Where was the honest humility that this team displayed during their run of 3 superbowls in 4 years?
2.) I think that there's even more pressure for Peyton Manning this week. They have home field, their defense has saved the offense for two straight weeks, and they've shown that they can beat New England IN Foxboro (doing it twice in the regular season, including this year). That said, if Manning puts out another dud this week, I think we can begin talking about Manning's legacy as that of one who couldn't win it when it matters most, an unfair account, but the truth.
3.) The time is ticking on Martyball in San Diego. Will the Chargers let him go after losing another playoff game? In all honesty, Marty didn't fumble the ball after McCree intercepted Brady (can we honestly say that Troy Brown IS the definition of versatility in this day and age). However, Marty DID throw that challenge flag. Marty DID neglect his Pro Bowl kicker. Marty DID not use LT to the fullest capacity (25 touches is nice, but in a game of this caliber, I felt that the Chargers did not use LT enough. 30+ was probably necessary). Throw in Shottenheimer's feud with A.J. Smith, and the Chargers could have a new coach patroling the sidelines next year.
4.) Now, can we get a little love for the NFC too? Chicago probably doesn't deserve any because they kept Seattle in the game for far too long, but Rex Grossman made the plays he had to in order for the Bears to pull it out. However, to beat New Orleans, the Bears need their D to return to early season form (not likely, but I did see some glances of it today), and they need the Rex Grossman of the first half and overtime to come out and lead the team. That said, I'm taking the Saints in the NFC Championship game because they just have too many weapons and that feel of destiny on hand...its inexplainable I guess.
That's all for now. Indy's been my superbowl team all year, so its too late to turn my back on them now. Go COLTS!
Colts kick past Ravens while the Saints march by the Eagles.
posted to Football at 7:29 AM CDT
And don't forget the work of two underrated parts to the Colts-Ravens game: the Colts suddenly appearing D and Dominic Rhodes's 4th quarter running. Those two have to be the major keys for how the Colts overcame Baltimore's strong defense. Honestly, the Ravens dropped BOTH safety's 15 yards deep AT LEAST throughout the entire game, taking away the deep pass from Manning, so the Colts had to work with what they got.
On the New England-San Diego game, LT will get his, but there will be about 4-5 plays during this game where Philip Rivers has to get the ball to one of his receivers. Other than Antonio Gates, I'm not sure if I trust those guys to make the big play. Although, Brady has the same problem as well. I'm not making a pick here, but the winner will be the one who sticks to their original game plan of running the ball (then again, thoughts of the AFC Championship between Pittsburgh run through my mind and how Brady came out firing passes left and right).
Finally, to the New Orleans Saints...YOU ARE NOT BOISE STATE!!! Sean Payton needs to realize that he has 2 good running backs (a luxary for the playoffs) and that he needs to utilize BOTH of them in order for his team to have a shot at winning. Still, the Deuce and the Bush have this team at the doorstep to the super bowl this year. Great coaching job to those Saints.
PS- Bears smash Seahawks
Vince Carter To The Clippers? New York Daily News - Nets president Rod Thorn traded for backup swingman Bernard Robinson on Wednesday. But that could be only the first deal for the Nets before the Feb.22 trading deadline. According to one Western Conference executive, "The Nets are trying to do everything they can" to make a move that will jumpstart their season."

VC to the Clippers? It will surely take more than Corey Maggette and Cuttino Mobley to pull that trade off. Both are fine players, but they are nowhere near worth what Carter is. It seems like the Clippers are in trade talks daily. Just the other day I heard a Ron Artest trade rumor (Artest for Maggette) and of course there was the talk of AI landing on the Clips roster (before he ended up in Denver).
Honestly, both teams need to make a move. The Nets are struggling in the worst division in Basketball while the Clips are mired in mediocrity (again). I don't think trading your superstar swingman is good, and nor do I agree with the Clips dealing an explosive slasher and a brilliant marksman away at this moment. The right deals will come around for these teams. They just need to be patient.
Michael Vick Passes the Buck The Atlanta Falcons quarterback's 2006 season: 2,474 passing yards, 1,039 rushing yards, 20 touchdown passes, 2 touchdown runs, and one provocative comment after Sunday's season-ending loss: "I don't see how people can point the finger at me. I think I had a great season. ... I can't do it all by myself. I call myself Superman, but I really don't have the cape on my back."
posted to Football at 10:30 AM CDT
A quarterback will always be judged on wins and losses, not his statistics. Look at some of the QB's in the league. The Marc Bulgers and Carson Palmers put up gaudy stats, but neither one is in the playoffs. Vick needs to look at his team and make it work. Its HIS job to get his players involved out there on the field.
With that said, Vick...SHUT THE F*** UP! You're a good football player, but the key to taking the next step is using the talent around you.
Yao will miss at least 6 weeks

Houston has had relatively good health this year...except for the 2 guys who need to be healthy for this team to succeed. Now, the team can still play decent ball (Luther Head has been outstanding with his 3-point shooting) and remember T-Mac could be back soon.
But lets face it, this was a flawed team from the get go. They were built to succeed with BOTH Yao and T-Mac in the line-up from day one. With those two, this was a team that could challenge the "Big 3" of the West (Dallas, San Antonio and Phoenix). However, now that their two big guns are gone, where's the offense coming from? Rafer Alston and Luther Head look solid together, but both guys are 3rd and 4th scorers on a contending team and a 2nd and 3rd scorers on mediocre squads. Shane Battier and Juwon Howard have shown that they can score, but at this stage in their careers they are mearly complimentary pieces who cannot be counted on for nightly infusions of 20 points a game.
RIP: Houston Rockets...another Houston franchise's season down the crapper...but thankfully it wasn't because of dumbass ownership/GMs making bad moves...it was the injury bug...
Rogers Continues His Age-Defying Brilliance The Kenny Rogers story is the one that will make this year's World Series one for the ages. He and this series are the thing legends are made of and the reason this World Series will be spoken of in hushed tones for generations to come. Be glad you were alive during this moment in sports history as you'll be able to brag about it to your grandchildren.

Who cares about Kenny Rogers guys. Its OBVIOUSLY the young guns that have everyone raving about Detroit. However, what makes this team better than last year's AL Central club is the fact that unlike the White Sox, the Tigers are built on bright young pitching prospects and not a bunch of guys who all put it together in the same year, only to tank the next season.
That said, I've missed commenting on sportsfilter and am glad to finally be back around. Now time to hide again behind mounds of organic chemistry. Go Tigers!

Massacre at Medinah I admit it wasn't the Medinah we thought it would be but Tiger still wins walking away. Tiger has won his last three events. It seems like he is on another one of his rolls where he wins 5 or 6 in a row. Are we half way to another Tiger Slam?
posted to Golf at 8:16 PM CDT
Its soothing to watch Tiger in this era of drug doping, contract holdouts and overhyping of stars. All he does is win majors (now up to an even dozen). He's 2/3 the way to Nicklaus and I do believe that he's got another Tiger Slam coming up. He'll clean up at Agusta next April and then it comes down to the US Open (prolly the one tournament he has trouble with the most).
We're watching history in lieu of a dark cloud of stuff.
Kornheiser Opens Eyes, Including His Own

I like him. Now get rid of Joe T. and bring in Mike Wilbon and the ratings would skyrocket.
Oh man, that would make MNF even more watchable...why not just make it Kornheiser, Wilbon and 'Stat Boy' instead (although Mike Tirico has been one of the better play by play guys over the past couple of years...so he could be "stat boy" in that case).
I liked reading some of the history behind some of these guys number choices...good call guys!
