The Ballad of Big Mike What happened next was the strangest encounter of Lemming's 28-year career as a football scout. Michael Oher sat down at the table across from him ... and refused to speak. "He shook my hand and then didn’t say a word," Lemming recalled. ("His hands — they were huge!") Lemming asked a few questions; Michael Oher just kept staring right through him. And soon enough Lemming decided further interaction was pointless. Michael Oher left, and he left behind blank forms and unanswered questions. Every other high-school football player in America was dying for Lemming to invite him to play in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl. Michael Oher had left his invitation on the table. A fantastic article in the NYT Magazine by Michael Lewis, detailing the unusual story behind Michael Oher. via kottke

The Road from Bristol A March Madness style bracket to determine which ESPN broadcasting personality is the most totally loathsome. Voting for the Egregious Eight takes place this week.

Who was your favorite player growing up? Rich Lederer asks that question to a group of baseball writers, analysts, and executives at a new site called Baseball Analysts. 15 of the 38 people named a Hall of Famer, and the leading player was Yaz, who was named five times. Yesterday was part one, today is part two, and the last part is due tomorrow. Here's the Baseball Primer thread on the article. Me? I'll take the Wizard of Oz.

Awesome, baby! The Super Bowl is over; the NHL isn't playing, and the NBA playoffs don't start for another 6 months or so. That means it's college hoops time! The stories so far: Illinois and Boston College are undefeated while traditional powers Kentucky, Kansas, North Carolina, and Duke are all having excellent seasons. Coaches are on the hot seat at Virginia and Indiana. Some resources: Jeff Sagarin's ratings; Ken Pomeroy's site, The Mid-Majority, and Yoni Cohen's excellent College Basketball Blog. And it's never too early for Bracketology. Oh yeah....this is Rivalry Week on ESPN.

16 nations vie for Euro 2008 title beginning June 7. Czech Republic, Portugal, Switzerland, Turkey, Austria, Croatia, Germany, Poland, France, Italy, Netherlands, Romania, Greece, Russia, Spain, Spain, Sweden. Who's your pick to win it? Who will be the surprise team? Where can we watch live in the US for free at home (or can we)? Get the ball rolling inside.

What franchise has the best run of players at one position in history? Batter's Box says it's Left Field for the Red Sox, but plenty of other arguments appear in the comments.

I think Win Shares could really help guide this discussion.
As a Cardinals fan, I immediately thought of them for the first basemen.
The Epic of Craig Biggio You ever go to a movie, it' s pretty good for about an hour and a half but then the story is over but it's like the director can't find the ending so it goes on for another half-hour looking for some way to tie things together? That's kind of Biggio's career; it was over, and then it went on for quite awhile.

I hated the way he (and others) let himself get hit by pitches constantly. That stupid elbow armor. But I did admire that he hung around forever and seemed to enjoy playing the game.

1988, Year of the Card "We're celebrating the 20th anniversary of one of the great classic baseball card sets, 1988 Topps. We're going through all 792 cards one by one, posting bits about what makes the card awesome and cool stats about the player or team featured on the card."

My first set was 86 Topps. And yes, I loved the gum, and the wax packs for 35 cents.
Fleer and Donruss had their first sets in 1981.
College Coaches Franchione, Callahan and Orgeron Sacked Say goodbye to Dennis Franchione at Texas A&M, Bill Callahan at Nebraska and Ed Orgeron at Ole Miss. Houston Nutt at Arkansas may be next.

No way LSU would hire Nutt. If Arkansas is going to let him go for not being good enough (which I think is ridiculous, I want him to stay), he's definitely not good enough for LSU. The unknown here is that Frank Broyles is finally stepping down from the AD position, and the new guy, Jeff Long from Pitt, will make the decision on Nutt's future. He might want to start off with a new hire, or he may want to keep Nutt on for continuity. Who knows.
And McFadden is not going to stay for his senior year, no way no how. He's a top 5 draft pick easy.

Ha. And let's not forget about my second favorite college football team, Duke. Ted Roof may be out after winning like 4 games in 4 years. What will AD Joe Alleva do? A nation waits.

Nutt wasn't gotten rid of for not being good enough but for various off the field controversies.
Arkansas didn't get rid of Nutt; Nutt got rid of Arkansas. But the reasoning is the same. I guess he was just sick of the whole situation. At Ole Miss he'll get a chance to stick it to the Hogs every year. And vice versa. That should be an interesting matchup for the next few years.
Duke Super Bowl In-depth analysis of tomorrow's clash of 1-9 college football titans. Mostly sophomoric, but humor us Duke fans on our one chance for football glory...

Oh man. I'll be in a cabin in the woods all weekend. Usually I schedule around a much-awaited, epic clash of the titans like this one. NBC is actually televising it, right?
Royal Reading Rule Reds. Starting their sophomore season in the Premiership, Reading (managed by Steve Coppell, a former Man Utd star) held the reigning champions to a 0-0 draw. Against players whose individual transfer fees cost more than most of Reading's team put together. At Man Utd's stadium. After having one man sent off with 20 minutes remaining. Rah rah, Reading!

He's a blowhard who churns out repetitive mad-lib style "columns." I wouldn't be surprised to find out that he's been dead for three years and his kids are making sure the TMQ Column Generating Machine gets an oil change every 30000 words.
USA 2-1 Mexico FSC's Christopher Sullivan said before the game that while El Tri generally outplay Uncle Sam, the Americans find the chances and win and that was certainly what happened this afternoon. Donovan got his fourth goal of the tournament, all PKs, emerging star Bennie Feilhaber had the best goal of the competition with a volley to the top far corner off a poor Mexican clearance for the winner and the US improved to 10-0-1 under Bob Bradley. Next: Bradley takes an extremely young team to Venezuela since even the strongest side he could have fielded were unlikely to make it out of the group stage.

Why are the USA and Mexico invited to play in Copa America? I thought it was a CONMEBOL tournament.
And their group is Argentina (FIFA #5), Paraguay (FIFA #37), and Colombia (FIFA #31). The US is currently FIFA #16, and I know there are lots of problems with the FIFA rankings, but I would expect them to be competitive in that group, even with the all the games in unfriendly stadiums.
Maybe there's just not much to play for, in that the US has their berth in the Confederations Cup. And maybe it's too early to be thinking about seeding for WC2010. And maybe we need to find out what the kids can do.
