Barry Bonds offers to play for free.
My opinion on Bonds is no secret, however I noticed this tidbit in the paper yesterday and have been meaning to post about it. Barry Bonds' agent has offered his services to all 30 teams, at a pro-rated salary of the league minimum (at this point, about $200,000 total), even offering to play for free by donating that salary to buying tickets for the game; his trial date isn't until next March, so he would not be prevented from playing.

Despite this, apparently Barry's agent has received no interest, bolstering claims that the league is colluding to prevent him being hired.

Would love to see the White Sox take a chance on Bonds. Jim Thome is just not ripping the ball anymore and the Sox have a legit opportunity to go deep in postseason play.

D'Antoni accepts Knicks' offer Mike D'Antoni is set to become coach of the New York Knicks, bringing his entertaining offensive style from the Phoenix Suns to a team coming off one of the worst seasons in its history. Can he make the Knicks contenders again?

posted to Basketball at 4:48 PM CDT

It's hard to fly without the right birds. D'Antoni is now the 3rd highest paid coach in the NBA with the absolute worst talent and worst attitudes of any players in the league. Good luck, Mike. Greed is good, right?

Maple Bats: One of Baseball's Most Dangerous Weapons About two or three times a game. players swinging bats made of maple wood end up with kindling in their hands while the barrel – blunt and thick on one end, splintered and sharp on the other – flies every which direction. "Someone's going to die at a baseball stadium soon," writes Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports. "Might be a player. Could be an umpire. Possibly even a fan. It almost was a coach."

Good case in point came during yesterday's Sox-Mariners game. Jim Thome hit a ball towards the shortstop, the barrel of his bat went flying at and just barely missed the pitcher. The pitcher had turned to his right to possibly field the ball and never saw his potential death approaching from the left. Even my father-in-law yelled "Damn !" and he can barely see anymore. Someone is going to die or be seriously injured very soon unless something is done.

Gibby’s 1.12 ERA: 40 years later. Hold teams down he did, unlike any other modern pitcher before and since. This season is the 40th anniversary of Gibson's 1.12 earned-run average, a number that defied logic and led to a rule change that altered how the game is played.

As a Cardinal fan, I of course loved to see him pitch. It was, however, very sad to see him in the mid 70's when his skills were diminishing. I cannot think of another player who took over a World Series the way he did in '64 and '67, talk about performing well under pressure.

Cavs Acquire Ben Wallace and Wally Alphabet for Playoff Run. Eleven player, three team deal between Cleveland, Chicago and Seattle. TrueHoop's thoughts.

Gee, the Bulls get another shooting guard. Yawn......I guess Ben Gordon is gonna be leaving, just covering their asses.

Curtis Martin Retires. Martin ranks fourth All-Time on the NFL's career rushing list and was the second running back in NFL history to start his career with ten straight 1,000 yard seasons.

Curtis Martin is a class act, no doubt. Also he knows the Jets backfield is in good hands with Thomas Jones.

NBA 1st Round Mock Draft. The Sports Blog Nation decide not to let Chad Ford and Marty Burns have all the fun.

Keep an eye on John Paxson and the Bulls. They need a big man who can score and have #9 and an abundance of young shooting guards. Can you say Pao Gasol ?

Will the Blackhawks raise Kane? With the 2007 NHL draft coming up this weekend, there's no consensus No. 1 pick, although there is plenty of talent to go around. Who do you like, who should your team draft ... and who's the biggest draft bust ever?

posted to Hockey at 9:56 PM CDT

You want to talk underwhelmed, let's talk 'bout those BlackHawks. This once proud franchise is ignored, especially in Chicago. It has been run (into the ground) by the ownership of Dollar Bill Wirtz and the general incompetence of Bob Pulford. Whomever they draft would be wise to sign no more than a 3 year contract, then get the hell out. You can't tell I'm bitter, can you?

Magic Hire Billy Donovan's Successor The Orlando Magic have hired Stan Van Gundy as their head coach, giving the Miami Heat draft picks as compensation. If Van Gundy has second thoughts tomorrow and returns to his job as a guy the Heat are paying to ride a desk, the team will be coached by mascot Stuff the Magic Dragon.

Donovan made the right choice. His players actually listen to him now, unlike the multi-millionaire prima donna's he would have coached in Orlando. This will definitely help Florida recruiting knowing he's there for the next 5 years.
I tip my hat to you, Billy Donovan for realizing the horror you were in for and for staying where you are successful.

Asante to Pats: See you midseason New England Patriots cornerback Asante Samuel, miffed about being given the franchise tag, is skipping the Pats' first mandatory minicamp. He also says he'll skip the preseason and the first half of the regular season if New England doesn't sweeten its offer. Where do your sympathies lie, and is the franchise tag fair? And tack on any other interesting minicamp news, like this tidbit about the Houston Texans allowing running back Samkon Gado to miss some offseason workouts to study for the MCAT. Gado plans to become a doctor when his football career ends.

The Redskins wanted Lance Briggs of the Bears, another franchise player who is pissed. I still there is a small chance of getting that one done, otherwise Briggs has threatened to do the same thing Samuel is.

I really do understand why they don't want the franchise tag, what if they get hurt? Then they truly are screwed, never gonna see the guaranteed big $$.

Pats Making Move For Moss If Randy Moss becomes a Patriot, the only question remaining will be: What possible excuse for not producing can he come up with now?

posted to Football at 10:37 AM CDT

Moss or Stallworth? Give me Dante anytime.....at least he TRIES to catch balls below his knees. More than I can say for Randy.

The New Color Line in American Baseball is Green As Jackie Robinson festivities highlight the declining number of black Americans playing pro ball, San Francisco Chronicle columnist C.W. Nevius offers a different reason for the shift: To develop skills and get noticed by scouts, young baseball prospects in the U.S. today must participate in expensive traveling teams and "showcase" tournaments like Perfect Game in Iowa, which prices the game out of the reach of many families. "At one point, we charted the first five rounds of the draft over the last eight or nine years and highlighted every black kid," said Perfect Game organizer Jerry Ford. "We found that with the exception of two or three players, every one of them had attended a Perfect Game event.'

Bledsoe retires Drew Bledsoe hangs it up after 14 years. Given his daunting stats but lack of a ring, is he merely another Marino? If not, how should we remember him? How does he rank among the greats?

posted to Football at 10:10 AM CDT

Drew Bledsoe WILL be in the Hall of fame. It's just that simple.
