Fines will be imposed for clear cases of flopping: The league office has yet to determine exact fine amounts for offending flops and how fines might escalate for repeat offenders, but in-game arena observers and video reviewers will be instructed to report instances of theatrical flopping for potential punishment as part of postgame reports on officiating and other matters.

Belichick's cheating could lead to dark days for NFL. Gregg Easterbrook: "It would not surprise me in the slightest if, before the season ends, Belichick resigns, or is suspended, or is fired by Kraft, or even is permanently barred from the league."

Howard fastest in history to 100 homers It soared over the roughly 35-foot-high batter's eye in center field, bouncing into the Wall of Fame area on Ashburn Alley, a distance estimated to be 505 feet by the Phillies. That was Ryan Howard's 100th career home run, coming in his 325th game, breaking Ralph Kiner's 59-year-old record (385th game).

Rose bat corked, says expert Apparently the bat ended up selling for over $100,000 to a casino that is going to cut it open to see if it's corked or not. Personally, I hope it is. Maybe this will finally put to rest all of the HOF talk that crops up every year.

Astros' Shawn Chacon Suspended After Fight with GM Houston Astros pitcher Shawn Chacon has been suspended after a physical altercation with general manager Ed Wade in the team's dining room. "He started yelling and cussing," said Chacon, recently demoted to the bullpen. "... I grabbed him by the neck and threw him to the ground. I jumped on top of him because at that point I wanted to beat his [butt]." Team owner Drayton McLane said Chacon will never pitch for the team again: "You can't defy authority."

Just another note to add to the VERY long list of reasons why Ed Wade is terrible at his job. Another long list is the number of players who wish they could choke this guy themselves.

The ultimate soccer pick-up game this evening (5:30) in Manhattan. Steve Nash putting an all-star group together for a pick-up soccer game for charity.

Anybody go? Sounds like a fun event. Curious how it played out. Also, how'd they raise money if attendance was free? Were they selling concessions?

Ever wondered what happens when a switch pitcher meets a switch hitter? Now you know. (via MetaFilter)

I happened to be watching this game last night. Funny stuff. The video in the link doesn't show it but he strikes the guy out. 2 called strikes (including a good curve ball), a ball, and then a slider outside that the hitter whifs on, after which he proceeds to unhappily slam his bat into the ground. The pitcher's fastball was in the high 80s.

I think I've heard of this before. I'm sure there's a few other guys out there capable of this...

Hell Yes I say. Curious how people think they are going to regulate this (seems like a VERY subjective thinig to officiate) but at the same time, I for one hate all the flopping in the NBA and am glad to see them disincentivize it in some way.

I know people complain a lot about flopping in soccer, and I am curious if any professional soccer leagues have ever done anything like this (create some system that addresses flopping). Have they? Shouldn't they?

Comment icon posted at 12:35 PM CDT on May 29

And I think players getting fined for flopping would be effective. I think it would be a matter of pride for these macho men. You wouldn't want to be amongst the league leaders in fine dollars for flopping.

Plus, the fine system may serve the purpose that Hal describes above. By fining players each time they flop, you get a database of who has been caught flopping the most. This would be a tough stat set (if it was thorough and uncompromising) for the referees to ignore.

knowsalittle- Thanks for a very cool story.

Just as an fyi- there's no such word as "irregardless." The word you're looking for is either plain old "regardless" or in this case "irrespective".

Just one spofi helping out the rest. "Irregardless" is one of the more commonly used non-words.

Is the Kentucky Derby a problem in racing? Frank Deford counts all the ways the signature event in American horse racing is screwed up.

posted to Other at 11:11 PM CDT

Interesting article. I never understood why they jammed all 3 of the triple crown races into 5 weeks. Of course, I've never had any respect for horse racing so I've never really cared. Still, you'd think that those people who do enjoy horseracing would want to spread out the "major" tournaments a little bit.

Probably just another example of tradition getting in the way of common sense.

Clemens reportedly had affair with country star Roger Clemens has another potential scandal he's already denying. He reportedly had a affair with country singer Mindy McCready in a decade-long relationship that began when she was 15 and Clemens was a 28-year old with the Red Sox. This could be especially damaging as Clemens' defamation suit against Brian McNamee proceeds.

This shows you the morals that most lawyers have, none.

Oh, how I love categorical indictments. Makes me think of a saying the police had back in the 60's (a period when they were categorically disparaged by many):

"Next time you're in trouble, call a hippie."

I think this guy made his job seem a lot more difficult than it really is. Other than a bit more red tape, it's not all that different from making a trade in a fantasy baseball auction keeper league where players have contracts.

Billy Crystal joins the Yankees. The 59-year-old comedian will sign a one-day, minor league contract with the New York Yankees and play in Thursday’s exhibition game against the Pittsburgh Pirates, wearing #60, a day before his 60th birthday. Crystal said, “I’ve been waiting 50 years for this call ... I know this’ll be tougher than the Broadway Softball League, but I’m looking forward to helping the younger players, which by the way is all of them."

Given some of the scrubs that get a chance to play at spring training, I'd say you could look at some of them and say, "Hey, that kid's taking an at bat away from Billy Crystal."

I think it's good for team morale and spirit to do fun things like this. A little levity in March is a good thing before the grind of the long season.

PGA Tour player Tripp Isenhour faces criminal charges for killing hawk It wasn't an accident, but it was with a hit golf ball. How many strokes off for killing a migratory bird?

posted to Golf at 7:15 PM CDT

There was probably some hot chick there that he was trying to impress. Killing the bird was a bit of a backfire though. Seems like people are having a bit of an excessive reaction to a bird dying, though.

When you think about what an environmental clusterf*#k golf courses are, well, it's just kind of funny to me.

Randy Moss Re-Signs with the Patriots Moss and the Patriots agree to a three year, $27 million deal. Meanwhile the Falcons release Warrick Dunn one day after signing Michael Turner to a six year deal. However, the week's biggest winner is Ben Roethlisberger who agreed to a $102 million deal with the Steelers.

posted to Football at 8:07 PM CDT

I sincerely hope that the real Randy Moss resurfaces and NE gets burned.

I sincerely doubt that happens.

And as an Eagle fan who remembers how "one relatively trouble-free year" of Terrell Owens elevated our offense to unreal heights, I'm sure Patriots' fans are happy that the Pats are giving it another go with Moss (and their even-more-unreal offense) in the roost.

Heat awarded do-over against Hawks The teams must replay the last 51.9 seconds due to a scoring error on number of fouls against Shaq.

3. Has this ever happened before in the NBA?

The article uses the word "unprecedented" to describe the event, so I'll guess they did their due diligence and the answer is "no".

Pretty unreal. By overtime all of the players are warmed up and the action is typically very fast paced. The start of a game tends to have a slower pace. It'll be interesting to see them replay these last 52 seconds "immediately prior" to their next match-up.

And the Vegas question is interesting. Anyone bet on the game?
